Review Summary: A fine album that would’ve been greater with a more youthful outlook

With the possible exception of The X Factor, Iron Maiden’s seventeenth album may be the slowest paced ever. I wouldn’t call Senjutsu doom or anything, but it feels almost like a flanderization of everybody’s complaints about modern Maiden with its now-exaggerated focus on long lengths and murky tones delivered with dramatic fervor. It’s probably their darkest album since A Matter of Life and Death and no doubt aims to match The Book of Souls’ ambitious scope, but it just doesn’t have as much character in comparison.

For what it’s worth, it actually starts off with some great songs. “Stratego” and “The Writing on the Wall” were good single choices with the former coming the closest to the galloping Maiden spirit and the latter riding out a cool mid-tempo strut. The title track’s slow burn call to arms also proves to be a cool start once you manage to feel out what it’s going for and “Days of Future Past” puts in a memorable chorus.

But you get into the album proper, subsequent tracks start feeling more like intriguing concepts than fully formed songs. “The Time Machine” feels like it could work with some more pep in its step while the downer “The Clansmen” sequel vibes on “Death of the Celts” would work incredibly well with a more defined structure. However, “Lost in a Lost World” and “Darkest Hour” showcase the album’s flaws most prominently with the former coming off directionless and the latter being too slow for its own good.

This is all compounded by the musicians really starting to show their age at this point. All the band’s signature tropes are in place and you can tell they’re still putting in effort, but the vocals feel less commanding, the guitars feel mushy, and the rhythms have scaled back their intensity. An album like Virtual XI feels defined by exhausted midlife crisis metal and albums like Brave New World” and “Dance of Death” exude laid back self-assured maturity, but this is where Iron Maiden just sounds… old.

Overall, Senjutsu is a fine album that feels like it could’ve been great with a more youthful outlook. There are enough strong tracks to overcome the fumbles and the band clearly still wants to keep exploring, but the non-linear songwriting makes it feel more like a series of unnatural jams than the epic journeys that they so desperately want to be. Part of me wonders how a younger band could’ve pulled this off or if Maiden should double down on this slow, dark territory. Do I just want them to magically turn into Pagan Altar?

It’s always wonderful to see Iron Maiden doing what they do, but this is the sort of album that actively makes you wonder how much longer they’ll be able to keep doing it. It reckons with an entropy that seems all the more indictable every day.

Atrocious album. Literally only gets a pass from metalheads because it has the Iron Maiden logo on the cover.

Sure, it’s nothing too impressive - maybe even in their bottom 5. But acting like this is in any way a poor quality album is completely disingenuous. Tbh out of any touring band of their generation, maiden have probably earned the right to rest on their laurels and ride things out til retirement the most.

Dude, I'm serious. I truly believe that this album is objectively bad in quite a few ways. The songwriting is completely trite and devoid of any variety, the production is god awful, there is a glaring lack of riffs, an abundance of uselessly meandering intros, and the performances sound disjointed and amateur. Bruce sounding old I can understand, but go back and focus on the instrumental side of things. They sound sloppy as fuck, especially Nico, who constantly fucks up and can't maintain a steady rhythm to save his life.

Funny enough, my issue with this album is the other way around. I'm completely fine with the instrumental side, but I'm really tired of Bruce singing three or four verses in a row with no variation whatsoever, particularly on those longer tracks. If anything, I wish the instrumental parts were given more time to breathe on these later Iron Maiden albums, because the verses tend to be so overbearing

It's the same problem I have with A7X's City of Evil (as much as I like that album). M. Shadows is constantly overdubbing himself over the music and it's like, DUDE. I JUST WANT TO HEAR WHAT THE OTHER MEMBERS ARE PLAYING

I think the rating of the review is accurate and I share nearly all the criticisms. Still the review focuses so much on the bad parts that it rather reads like a 2.5 - 3.

This album has some very good tunes and parts but is overlong and feels incohesive at parts. It's a mixed bag, nothing less and nothing more.

Take 'Lost In a Lost world'. The typical problem that the intro is meandering (in a bad way, not in a hypnotical, drawing you in, good way) and does nothing for the song (except setting up the segue at the end which kinda fits after the song). The song would lose nothing without it (or with being cut short to let's say 15 seconds just in order to prepare the segue at the end of the song).. After this, it's a very decent song with a strong and atmospheric chorus. Somewhat the strengths and weaknesses of the album are perfectly encapsulated in that song.

Typical Maiden fanboy denial. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Maiden fan too, but if we allow them to put out low effort garbage like this, we will never get another quality album out of them. Stop rewarding these guys for putting out bullshit like this.

Bro we’re not training Rottweilers we’re talking about pensioners just making some tunes for fun. I promise you negative reinforcement training is completely irrelevant when it comes to modern day iron maiden albums.

People are also allowed to dislike an album. If you enjoy it it's also fine, music is subjective.

I mean yeah, but saying that any type of art form is subjective represents the cheapest, most lame way of having an argument/discussion.
