Review Summary: Very average, with some charm.

Listening to this record, I couldn’t help but wonder if this was 2020 or the 1990s again.

This band has definitely channels Green Day a lot and Blink-182 a bit. Their lyrics are a lot darker and are littered with dark metaphors that are rolled off rather casually.

They have two vocalists. One sounds like a very generic pop-punk vocalist, but he’s good for the genre. The other vocalist tries to be more hardcore, but inadvertently ends up sounding like a poor mans Axl Rose (who already sounded like a poor mans someone or the other).

I couldn’t bring myself to give this record a pass mark of 2.5. From beginning to end there weren’t any new ideas conveyed that weren’t explored before, most of the melodies sounding like a lot of pop-punk bands would have done a LONG TIME AGO. This band is simply regurgitating ideas that have been recycled over many times before. They COMPLETELY FAIL to come up with a single fresh idea (other than their oddball lyrics) or change of pace to make this more interesting. They don’t even try. They are truly one-trick-ponies who have very little in their artillery.

Their songs all have a similar melody but some are better than others. Last last words is a good song and Ghostwriter is a very good song. Coyote Crown is not a bad closer. When the guy who doesn’t want to sound like Axl Rose takes the vocals, the quality of the songs is weaker.

On the plus side they have energy and sing with sincerity, but this was well-worn-ground many years ago.

you do know Lawrence Arms were as much pioneers of the genre as anyone else back in the day, right? review reads like they've road the back of giants for time. this album isn't amazing or defining imo, but it hits all the elements of what made the band so good in the past; it's definitely a fan-pleaser.

Yeah, this review is pretty terrible. It's like you went out of your way to be as uninformed as possible.

im gathering this is your first Lawrence arms. i agree this album is derivative, but it’s mostly derivative of their own style that they had settled into 20 years ago. you’re talking about them like they’re a new band, like if you’d heard any of their albums before this you would’ve known exactly what to expect, this is just business as usual for them (which, admittedly, did leave me unimpressed by this album even if it’s solid. but I’m not going to Lawrence arms expecting innovation)

This review makes a lot of claims it doesn't substantiate

In what world does Brendan Kelly sound like Axl Rose? Are you knew to anything punk or any band that has a raspy singer?

Review is just uninformed garbage. Although the channeling 'Green Day' and 'Blink 182' and the sounding like a poor mans Axel Rose gave me a chuckle
