Review Summary: astr-annoyed Astronoid opens well enough with a light, atmospheric tune featuring vocals reminiscent of Mew (albeit airier), the music akin to dream-pop/shoegaze with elements of metal. Initially it seems like a promising marriage of genres, but as the listener delves deeper into Astronoid it reveals itself to be devoid of any divergences from this formula. Every song plays out in the same fashion, lending to an overly homogeneous product. Now, I know some people are wont to take issue with using ‘homogeneity’ as a detraction, which is reasonable, it needn’t always be viewed with a negative connotation. A band whose sound is unique and fun can get away with having same-y songwriting and production, but after enduring the next few lazily constructed songs, many nuisances start to surface in Astronoid that persist to its anti-climactic end.
The vocals are the worst offender here, let’s get that right. They’re way too floaty in the mix and there’s no variety to them across the entire fifty minute experience. Worse yet, the vocalist has a tendency to overstretch syllables to an exhaustive degree. “It slipped awayyyyyyyy”, “I must stayyyyyyyy”, “Been led astrayyyyyyy”, “Torn awayyyyyyy” - you get the picture. I could easily list another 50 examples of this and I’m not even exaggerating. Even the ones I pulled were from two verses in the first song. It's redundant as hell and the singer abuses this gimmick throughout the entire album, which becomes very grating after just a short period of time. The music as well falls flat most always, likely attributed to the lackluster production. It sounds sterile, colourless, not one instrument stands out as exceptional and they’re far too sunken in the mix, almost like it’s being heard underwater. It’s difficult to find a single hook or melody to latch onto, which is a shame, because if there were more variety on offer and less reliance on the aforementioned gimmicks, this could have been a decent stepping stone for the band.
It’s hard to recommend this to anyone. Even after three full listens it’s difficult to discern one song from the next, or pick a notable moment. If it were mixed better and the vocalist relied less heavily on his only trick, this could have been salvageable.

on the homogeneity front i'd liken this album to playdoh - if you smush all the colours together it just goes brown

" I could easily list another 100 examples of this and I’m not even exaggerating. " Yes, you are exaggerating lol
"most always" wut
"not one instrument"
" next. or" missing caps
" it were" should be "it was"
Honestly, not a good review man, you focus too much on your disliking of the vocals and your only argument is not very convincing, plus it's riddled with grammar and spelling mistakes, as you can see. I know you are gonna think I'm an ass for pointing these out but this is just honest feedback. You do what you think it's right with it.

"" I could easily list another 100 examples of this and I’m not even exaggerating. " Yes, you are exaggerating lol"
It's a large enough number that the point remains valid, but i'll amend it to 50, ya pedant.
""most always" wut"
Colloquialism meaning 'almost always', sry for being informal.
"" next. or" missing caps"
Supposed to be a comma, oops.
"not one instrument"
Either/or. No one instrument/no single instrument/not one instrument etc. All the same shit. I think you got confused by my wording there, 'not one' is probably a less ambiguous phrasing I suppose.
"" it were" should be "it was""
When approaching this, I always refer to that rule to use were with expressions that are hypothetical, wishful, imagined, desired, doubtful, and otherwise contrary to fact. Isn't were most commonly used as a subjunctive, and in that context correct? I could be wrong about that, I'll have to look into it more.
And finally anatelier already owned you regarding wont.
Thank you for your feedback.
