Review Summary: Not noided this time

Year of the Snitch lost the cohesion of most of DG records, replacing it with the weirdest stuff they could do and throwing it in an undecided tracklist. They have always been weird at a first listen, but this time it all feels blended together in an uncertain way that makes it very difficult to digest and appreciate sometimes.
Some singles stand out (Dilemma, Black Paint) probably because they resemble the old DG stuff and don't get further like some other tracks do (Little Richard, s***show, hahaha), which in lack of any catchy melody, interesting instrumentals or good lyrics, feel very forgettable. Of couse Death Grips continue to put out audacious experiments with every album and that's appreciable, but in the case of Year of the Snitch, there's really nothing special or unexpected; sometimes i feel that they let themselves slip a little bit off the edge, and again, replaced the cohesion of records like Bottomless Pit or Money Store with a wild mess that can probably impress someone, but i liked DG for other reasons, not only for the ''noise''. Other that that, it doesn't seem to me that MC Ride is writing any interesting lyrics anymore. If there's a character in this album, i didn't see it. What i loved about Bottomless Pit was that he moved to a crazier prose that resembled the writing style of some W.S. Burroughs/J. Joyce character, sometimes juxtaposing a series of random words that meant something all together. Seems this is happening in YOTS too, but it feels already sterile, since is no step further or innovation from what he did in BP.
In conclusion, there's probably a lot of people that will connect to this thing better than me, but i feel that this album is just made for the sake of doing something as weird as possible, and i'm not saying it's a bad thing, it's good to see them change everytime. I like weird/trashy stuff, it doesn't have to make sense to be nice so i even appreciated the music videos and the whole tone of this album, but it didn't impress me.
Nonetheless, good luck to this band for their future projects, i just hope they will dominate the mess and not get suffocated by it.

While not one of their most blistering achievements, its a welcome addition to their now long discog...

You should pay me to tell you what to listen to, really (3)
Death Grips may look back, but they keep moving stubbornly forward...

I was going to write a review of this album but I'm certainly going to get teased about it. My reputation on this site is fragile as it is

I get it if you got an early copy or if it's been streaming a week early, but thinking you've written a proper and accurate review the same day the album is released reads to me as a cry for attention & I see this behavior a lot lately

honestly half of the sputnik userbase baffles me

@yanquiuxo Just a couple constructive criticisms about your review, mate:

1. In general, your grammar and spelling, like not capitalizing "I", makes it look unprofessional.

2. Get rid of references to yourself. Don't put "I" in a review. "I feel", "I think", "I hope": You're writing it-- we know they're your thoughts. Review the album and not your thoughts about the album. You're not going to find any serious reviews with a person referring to themselves in it. It ain't about you.

Example: "If there's a character in this album, i didn't see it" vs "This album has no character".

"i feel that this album is just made for the sake of doing something as weird as possible" vs "Death Grips made this album just for the sake of doing something as weird as possible".

3. You qualify with unnecessary adjectives:

--"makes it very difficult to digest and appreciate sometimes" vs "makes it difficult to digest and appreciate".

--"there's really nothing special or unexpected" vs "there's nothing special or unexpected".

4. Including the two examples above, you struggle with committing to your opinion. Like you have to ask for permission.

--"there's probably a lot of people..." Just say it: There are a lot of people.

--"Seems this is happening in YOTS" Just say it: This is happening in YOTS.

--"it doesn't seem to me that MC Ride is writing any interesting lyrics anymore." Just say it: MC Ride is not writing interesting lyrics any longer.

When you write this way, you become unreliable. It's not clear whether you know anything. You're just guessing as far as I can tell.

5. Finally WHY? Your entire review can be summarized by "This album isn't as cohesive as past albums, and the songs aren't as good". Why aren't they as good? Because you don't like them? Is there something more objective you can point to that people will agree with your opinion?

More of this: Bottomless Pit moved to a crazier prose in the writing style of some W.S. Burroughs/J. Joyce character, sometimes juxtaposing a series of random words that, altogether, meant something.

This is actually good commentary on why you thought BP was well written. But then you follow up with:

"Seems this is happening in YOTS too, but it feels already sterile"

You neutered your argument! I thought you were explaining why BP was a better written album, but you then claim YOTS was equally well written. That was the crux of your entire argument AGAINST Year of the Snitch.

I'd write one, but I'd have to actually go through the discography and I'm pretty sure someone will beat me to it.
