Review Summary: Overall, Sentinel have well and truly delivered with ‘The Primordial Ruin’. Showing musicianship beyond their years, these Melbourne boys may just be the next big thing. With potential like this, there’s no reason otherwise.
Melbourne’s own Sentinel have released the follow up to their debut EP ‘The History Weave’, with arguably one of Australia’s best progressive metalcore records in recent years, titled ‘The Primordial Ruin’.
The basis of the lyrical content discusses the two forces of Life and Death, and their ever constant tug-of-war that ultimately ends with our universe’s demise. Although somewhat typical of Sentinel’s genre, the concept is relatively original and for this, the quintet deserves credit.
Narrative aside, this release is a massive step up for the band. Vocally, Brandon Hoogendorp diversifies between deathcore-esque squeals, solid screams and guttural lows that keep the flow of the songs fresh and interesting. Honourable mentions are also necessary, with solid guest vocal spots on both the title track and The Terrible Lie (Hope), performed by Mason Bunt of Pridelands and Chris Millward of Glorified respectively.
Instrumentally, Sentinel have seemingly taken inspiration from the Sumerian Records roster, creating a sound as brutal as it is atmospheric. Regarding the former, Odium is an all-out mosh fest, while Aversions Crown vocalist Mark Poida lends his monster voice during Nadir, a track that does justice to the phrase ‘it will melt your face off’. On the lighter side, vocalist Brandon Hoogendorp’s tortured screams contrast beautifully with the post-rock influenced guitar layering, really filling out the band’s sound in spectacular fashion. See record opener Hubris and the engaging instrumental track Revelations for fitting examples of this.
Overall, Sentinel have well and truly delivered with ‘The Primordial Ruin’. Showing musicianship beyond their years, these Melbourne boys may just be the next big thing. With potential like this, there’s no reason otherwise.
