Review Summary: How does one run a human race?
Review number 29291921921929.Whatever! I'm jumping on the bandwagon here, simply because I was hyped for the album. With the change that happened in 2013 with Adam's departure....I was worried, okay? I was panicking that my favorite childhood band would be no more after they lost a great talent in Adam.I have no comments on that issue, maybe he left due to TOV's change in sound or maybe he was a dick or maybe i don't care.Things were about to change for 3DG and that was it. I started crapping myself when I heard that Matt ''Porn Star Dancing'' Walst was joining the band. I was.....not impressed. Then ''Painkiller'' dropped and my attention was again turned to 3DG. It's was catchy as hell but it was still a simple yet effective song! Then I saw them live and Mr Walst did a great job on the songs,so I gave myself time to see Human in it's full to make a decision and quite frankly.....It could be worse.....Much worse!
First things first, this is not the 3DG of TDG and One-X. Those two are just in a class of their own.So if I have to be honest...I will rank this album above Transit of Venus and below Life Starts Now(don't stone me!). Their gritty, more dark themes are back in Human and clearly expressed(despite this being done in a very simplistic matter). The concept of the album is mainly focused on the dark side of humans and I dig the idea. We have songs about addiction, love, heartbreak, anger, the whole lot in here, but they are just so goddamn simple! It's too much in your face and that ticks me off. Dude,we get it you want to break ***. Same goes for music wise. Walst is singing his heart out and I give him credit for that but I feel like they simply ran out of ideas for music and why is Barry the only guitar?! If Walst played guitar on *shivers* My Darkest Days surely he can play here as well! Some songs are more complex lyric wise like ''Fallen Angel'' and I love the metaphor of ''Car Crash'' and the album as a whole is catchy and fun to rock out to once or twice but the simplicity on this album both lyric wise and music wise just struck me as strange and not enough for the theme that the album is exploring in general. When you title a song ''Human Race'' I expect you to talk about the race of humans.....not...a race which you run(Not sure if can call this a pun,but let's just say I facepalmed when I realized what he was singing)
I was mainly impressed by the fact that the band tried their best to return to their breakthrough sound and as a 3DG fan I see and appreciate this(Listen to Tell Me Why and then Never Too Late....). That was interesting to see, because they clearly know the formula that works and they tried to imitate it with Matthew over here.... At some points it works,at some it doesn't.
Overall, this album marks a new era of mainstream 3DG which will eventually fade away in about a year or so,but for the open-minded fans this is still a good album to rock out to.It's catchy, fun and dark, but if you expect to be hit in the feels by this album like you used to be in the previous ones, then IM AFRAID I GOT SOME BAD NEWS!
