Review Summary: Storm is exactly what its name suggests, a crushing onslaught of heavy riffs reminiscent of a violent rainstorm When used effectively, the slow, lumbering riffs of doom metal can give an impression of a constantly moving force. However slow that movement may be, it is garunteed that anything caught in the way faces certain destruction. With 'Storm', Swedish act Snailking deliver a force comparable to a violent storm. Whether the outcome is flooding, mudslides, grapefruit sized hail, or some combination of the three, one thing is for certain: there will be destruction and there will be a body count.
As one might expect, Snailking comes from the Ufomammut album of the same name. As such, you pretty much have a rough estimate of what the band sounds like, as already mentioned there is the slow paced doom and crushing sludge riffs, but the music also gets punctuated by bits of stoner influence, whether it's in Pontus Ottoson's occasionally clean vocals or the heavy atmospherics used in each song, the influence is definitely present. However, compared to the band's first release the 'Samsara' demo, it has been heavily stripped down. With the demo Snailking had a greater interest in snares and were experimenting with their guitars to create a somewhat psychedelic effect. With 'Storm' however, Snailking has shedded its stoner sound and gone head first into doom-sludge territory.
That being said, don't expect anything original or groundbreaking from this LP. Suffice to say, the album wears its influences on its sleeves. Dense instrumentation, lumbering melodies, and a thick onslaught of riffs are to be expected with little variety. And this is not a bad thing; if there's one thing the band does extremely well, it's creating an engaging atmosphere, with every song the band focuses on keeping listeners entranced in the atmospherics rather than pummeling them with constant guitar plodding in the hopes that noise will suffice for substance. The band provides surprisingly diverse melodies considering three of the five tracks on this LP cross the 10 minute mark. Requiem, for example, starts off with the sound of rain as an allusion to the album's title. Slithering, on the other hand, starts off with a punkish riff before building up to a massive climax.
While this band has a long way to go, Snailking have already shown that they have what it takes to be a respected band in the field, with enough variety and substance to keep listeners interested for more than one song. From the increasingly tense atmosphere to the crushing, dense riffs, ‘Storm’ makes effective use of each member’s talents. As such Storm is surprisingly mature and developed, and shows the potential that these Swedes have. No, this band is nothing unique right now, but that doesn't mean they won't be somewhere down the road.

Well written review, pos
The demo treaded on YOB's footsteps and for what it was, it was pretty great.
Compared to the demo, this album is not as strong (a low 3/5), music and sound production wise (for example, the snare drum is barely heard in the final mix).

Yeah this isn't quite as good, but it's a solid effort for what it is,
Like a 3-3.5

Yeah, the main issue is the sound, with a different take (like, say, the last Windhand album), the album would sound much better.
Edit:
For some reason, the atmospheric parts of the album remind me of Minsk.

Not gonna argue with that
| | | did these guys name themselves after that ufomammut album?
| | | "As one might expect, the name Snailking comes from the Ufomammut album of the same name"
ps, @sharktooth - maybe do a quick edit of this sentence, since having 'name' twice makes it read kinda funny. maybe just cut out
'of the same name' or something
