Review Summary: Fast, Angry, Ahead of its time

The first song I ever heard off of Slipknot's self titled album was No Life. I was 14 at the time and by then the only songs that I had heard by the Knot were Duality and Pulse of the Maggots. No life stood out to me due to its speed and ferocity. I found myself saying "wow, this sounds nothing like duality or pulse of the maggots." By then I had been listening to Vol. 3 religiously, I could not get enough of that album. Vol. 3 drove me into pursuing the dark and violent past of slipknot. Though still heavy and fast paced, vol. 3 just does not compare to slipknot's first two albums. I don't want to get off topic by discussing slipknot's seconds release Iowa, so back to their self titled album. The first thing that will stand out with this album is it's raw aggression. Slipknot is not the heaviest or loudest band out there, but they are definitely one of if not the most pissed off. Anyone who has read up on lead singer Corey Taylor, knows that his upbringing was not the best, and he makes that very clear in this album. Corey is an excellent vocalist. He can sing melodically very well and does so with great efficiency in many of the songs. One song that comes to mind would be Me Inside. As far as guttural vocals go, Corey emits more of a raspy yell that sometimes changes into a higher pitched shriek. He uses many clever metaphors in his songs to emphasize his disgust for everything and everyone. You can truly feel the pain in Corey's voice. He sounds like he is yelling for a purpose, not just for the sake of yelling. Reminiscent to Jonathan Davis of Korn, Corey sounds upset, and to me, that is proof of a professional musician. This album can be described more as alternative metal, or nu metal. It encompasses multiple styles of metal and blends it into one. There's screaming, singing, and even rapping. The guitarists Mick Thomson and Jim Root work well together in making eerie aggressive riffs to go along with Corey's agro lyrics. The guitar isn't technical by any means. Thomson and Root rely more on simplicity in order to create emotion. Their funky riffs mixed with the scratching and sampling of Craig Jones and Sid Wilson, create a dark grungy almost industrial sound that you cant help but absorb like a sponge. This album was released in 1999, and was truly ahead of its time. The key to this comes down to the drumming and percussion. Joey Jordison is a wizard behind the kit. Even people who absolutely despise heavy music, will listen to slipknot and say "damn, their drummer is ***ing nasty." This is very true. Joey is not the fastest or most technical drummer, but he holds a beat at tempos that few could ever even fathom. Joey helps add character to the music and that helps bring each song to life. He was one of the earlier drummers to really start emphasizing the use of double bass. Before many drummers would just play straight 16th or 32nd notes all the way through. Joey switches this up by creating multiple patterns and fills with the bass drum that sometimes seem so complex, that the listener wonders if its even real. This ultimately adds even more power and aggression to an already extremely aggressive album. Bassists may not find as much satisfaction listening to this album as say "Mudvayne" but Paul Grey (RIP) is certainly talented. Shawn Crahan and Chris Fehn add even more layering to the music as percussionist along with Jordison's chaotic onslaught. Overall this is my favorite slipknot album and one of my favorite albums of all time. It came out nearly 15 years ago and still sets the bar. People love to hate on slipknot but if you listen to their old material you will understand why they are as famous as they are. This album is extremely refreshing to listen to. Fans of fast guitar tempos and double bass drumming will most definitely eat this album up. Give it a listen you will be glad you did.

First off, while I don't have a thing against introducing the review with a brief history, let's try to generalize that and avoid the Sesquipedelian loquaciousness as to this and that.

Also, it's not off topic at all to talk about a band's other albums in the review you're writing in an album. Is pretty much a way of life here.
