Review Summary: For non-Justin Bieber fans Wood Shampoo and "Crack, Crack Heart Attack" are like a smoky breath of air at the now defunct CBGBs back in the day.
What sets to "Crack, Crack Heart Attack" apart from most other punk rock records is the level of musicianship that the members of Wood Shampoo possess. With past credits received by working with other artists such as U2, Elvis Costello, Billy Joel, Peter Gabriel, Joan Jett and many more, Murph Daniels and his gang have what it takes to take it into the studio and lay down some serious business.
The 17 songs on their only album are a fun, retro rock and roll rollercoaster ride that covers all the typical bases such as drugs, stardom, rejection, death and an extraterrestrial visitor here and there every now and then. Nothing's too serious as a heart attack not to be laughed at by the boys in the Wood Shampoo band. With them, rolling with the punches literally means rolling on the floor with laughter.
My personal favorite was the "Top Of The World" tune with it's John Cougar Mellencamp inflections and "I'm a loser Baby so why don't you kill me" attitude. But the other 16 tracks weren't that far behind on my list.
Maybe Wood Shampoo and "Crack, Crack Heart Attack" is not everyone's cup of mushroom tea, but for those of us non-Justin Bieber fans it was like a smoky breath of air at the now defunct CBGBs back in the day. If I closed my eyes while listening I could image this band on that iconic stage burning down the house and raising the roof.
BTW-shout outs and brownie points to their publicist for sending the song lyrics over to me when I requested them. They made for a fun read and provided a few chuckles I may have missed if I had only the recordings to go by.
