Review Summary: An awful deathcore album with very few merits and a whole lot of generic shit.

Many who enjoy extreme metal music will be aware of Whitechapel and their debut album The Somatic Defilement. This is going to be remastered in 2013 and so I decided to take a trip down memory lane and listen to one of the first death metal/deathcore albums I ever heard. This is a fast and aggressive album but the facts are that it really does nothing innovative or interesting and so I was wondering after hearing it exactly what had provoked such interest from me during my early teenage years. Whatever it was, this album is nothing more than a generic pile of *** that re-uses the same song format over and over again.

The one noteable exception to this would be the song Vicer Exciser which is a song that nearly everyone who has heard of this band has heard at least once purely because of the breakdown which amazes many inexperienced teenagers who have never heard any pure death metal before and will think it is the heaviest *** ever when it really is not. The lyrics to this album meet their absolute pinnacle of ridiculousness on this song but they are consistently awful. The album is a concept album about the Jack The Ripper killings which involved a man murdering prostitutes and they make use of various long words that many will no doubt have ever heard. Ninety percent of the lyrics from this album no doubt involved heavy use of a dictionary and a thesaurus to give the impression of them being well thought out but there is no denying that they are not purely due to the heavy use of one particular four letter word. Aside from this Vicer Exciser is a fast and aggressive song with some good riffs and fast drumming and a decent vocal performance.

The vocals are one thing that can be pointed out as a good thing about this album. Phil Bozeman is an exceptionally talented extreme metal vocalist as his lows are both exceedingly guttural and yet you can still understand every gore-flecked word that he spews from his mouth at a fast pace. Also he has a nice higher range that makes for some interesting contrasts. The rest of the instrumentals are mainly bland and rely on simplistic beats for the most part and a whole lot of open string chugging for breakdowns that are used at least twice per song. The title track opens up with a decent low growl but the rest of the track is just the band using the same idea that they use for the rest of the album over and over again and it really does get annoying. The guitar riffs are very low and and sludgy and this would be good if there was any real variation to them. The production job is also a massive annoyance that does nothing but *** up anything remotely decent this band managed to craft (which is not a whole lot). Sorry, Whitechapel, but your debut sucks balls.

so? does that change the fact their newest albums are as generic as it gets? there were bands that used chugging and blast beats before either band-cannibal corpse for instance.

those bands don't throw breakdowns at your face three times every song. this is formulaic and boring, with little variation, like most deathcore (but not all.) and really, comparing this in any way to immolation and suffocation is really kind of pointless. they're quite different.
