Review Summary: Among the best albums ever written for certain

23 of 24 thought this review was well written

It would be a fair comment to say that Nirvana are one of the biggest bands of all time, and one that inspires controversy whenever their name is mentioned among the communities that relate to heavier music. Some consider the band to have carried rock music through the 1990's whereas others will no doubt discredit their entire discography as being watered down nonsense. The latter opinion is one that I personally consider to be complete bull***. Nirvana's Nevermind - aside from being one of the most successful releases of all time - is more than just a solid release but actually topples much of the music of its time.

The album is most famous for its mega hit songs such as Smells Like Teen Spirit and Lithium; but it is an album that is pretty much perfect throughout. If you think after the first few songs that the album is guaranteed to go down hill then guess again for there is not a *** song in sight. This was an album that embraced a "back to basics" policy when it comes to musicianship and let the lyrics take the back seat in favor of the melodies created by the instrumental work. The riffs are primarily comprised of a few chords played at a mid-tempo that make for an interesting listen whilst Cobain sings his tortured lyrics over the top of it.

The actual vocal performance is often the subject of much debate among people. Kurt's vocals are mainly rather aggressive and full of angst with the occasional sections of manic shrieking such as in Territorial Pissings. Smells Like Teen Spirit is often ridiculed for the fact that many of the lines are indecipherable without the lyric booklet but this does not matter as what the vocals do on that song is make for a depressed sound. This is continued on Lithium which may well be my favorite Nirvana song. This is a dark song about the titular drug that Cobain was using to combat depression and is both emotional and has some fantastic musicianship.

The album revolves around a lot of jumps from a softer breed of music to a much louder and more aggressive tone such as the chorus to Smells Like Teen Spirit. The band handles these changes very well; often with the use of both clean guitar tones and heavy distortion on the louder sections of the tracks. Polly is probably the most noteworthy exception to this style that the band takes, being an acoustic song with some really nice vocals with low tones from Cobain and a short running time that works to its advantage. If there is one song off of this album that is recommended to absolutely everyone it would be this song.

The bass work is heard throughout and is a nice addition to the album that actually sticks out to me. It is well written and is nice to hear the soft rumbling in the background that so many rock bands forget to make audible. This also compliments the quick jumps in style of guitar work very well as it leaves the album with one sound that constantly sticks to the same range whilst the others are changing up so often. Cobain was very wise to ensure that the bass guitar can be heard otherwise the sharp contrasts of the album may be a little too daunting for some people and this contributes to the album's success.

Nevermind is both a highly influential and well written album that makes good use of jumps from soft to heavy music. The lyrics are dark and depressing and compliment the nature of the music. Whether this is the album that saved or killed heavy music is down to personal opinion but either would be complete bull *** as this is an album that stands on its own.

On that subject of your avatar: Go to your profile page and click on 'edit my info'. You'll have to log in again, once you do, go to 'Edit avatar' the rest is pretty self explanatory.

This is what's wrong with Nirvana haters. First of all, statement is kind of true, and second of all we're not all/don't all type like 12-year-olds. This was actually a decent review, if not stellar.

The content of the review is good, but your writing has no flow whatsoever, and your ability with
punctuation is all over the place; Sometimes you use it right, sometimes you use it wrong, sometimes
you don't use it all when you should and sometimes you use it when you shouldn't.

And don't ever make statements like on a summary.
Like, ever.
And if you're gonna suggest it, don't be as direct like that.

Not gonna neg since it's not terribly written, you got somethings to learn but you're not a bad
reviewer.

review is not bad, but kind of hyperbolic I feel. But that could just be me, because I think Nirvana is overrated in general.

God I love the word "hater", seems to be the ultimate cop-out response when somebody doesn't buy into the massive hyperbole surrounding a particular album.

Err, this is unrelated to the review but try to keep up as only 1 review per day.

Not a rule but it helps giving some "publicity" to other reviewers, not to mention writing too much too fast can lead a burnout or writer's block.

And thanks.

Well I think all you really need to do is to brush up the grammar, particularly punctuation, and to be a little smoother with the way you change up your points and arguments.

Everything else on the review was fine, even if I don't agree with it, so yeah, just keep it at dude.
