Review Summary: When this came out, the Geto Boys took it to "That Other Level".

Critical Responses:
Allmusic: 3/5
The Source: 5 Mics

Yes, that's right, this was one of the albums that got the perfect 5 mic rating from The Source Magazine. While misogynistic, and very very offensive, I believe that this album truly deserves it. Speaking of misogynistic and offensive, this album is pretty much offensive in every which way possible. It had foul language, violence (specifically against women), and much much more. It had so much of it, that it saw activist groups unsuccessfully trying to ban the album. That, my friend, is the definition of horrorcore hip hop.

The Geto Boys (at the time of this album) consist of, Scarface, Willie D, and Buschwick Bill, and were one of the best hip hop groups of (dare I say it) ALL TIME! Now for the track by track review.

1. Do It Like A G.O: Classic song. 5/5

2. Gangsta of Love: This song, features Willie D and Scarface rhyming about how they treat women (I'll give you a hint again: activists tried to ban the album, how do you think they treated their women). Classic song. 5/5

3. Talkin' Loud Ain't Saying Nothin: This song, has the Geto Boys rhyming about how they like to beat people up. Classic song. 5/5

4. Read These Nikes: This one, has the Willie D rhyming about, how he likes to put his shoes on peoples faces (by the title, I'm guessing that he has a nice taste of shoes). Classic song. This song samples, "It Takes Two" by Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock, and other songs. 5/5

5. Size Ain't ***: This is a Buschwick Bill solo, and has him rhyming about, no matter how small he may be, he's still awesome. Classic song. 5/5

6. Seek and Destroy: This is a Scarface solo, and has him rhyming about how he uses his weapons (specifically guns). Classic song. 5/5

7. No Sellout: This has Willie D and Scarface rhyming about how they are black and they are proud (not in a Public Enemy type way). Classic song. 5/5

8. Let a Ho Be a Ho: This is a Willie D rhyming about what you would think by the title. Classic song. 5/5

9. Scarface: This is a Scarface solo, that has him introducing him, and his persona, since this is his first album. Classic song. This song samples, "Straight Outta Compton", and other songs. 5/5

10. Life In the Fast Lane: Another Scarface solo. Classic song. 5/5

11. Trigga-Happy Nigga: This one has all of the Geto Boys, rhyming about how they are "trigger happy". Classic song. 5/5

12. Mind of a Lunatic: This one is possibly the most controversial song on the album, dealing with necrophilia. Classic song. 5/5

Overall, although this is very VERY offensive, it's a classic. I give it a perfect rating.

3 Best Songs:
1. No Sellout
2. Seek and Destroy
3. Scarface

3 Weakest Songs:
1. Mind of a Lunatic
2. Let a Ho Be a Ho
3. Gangsta of Love

why do you even bother putting the 5/5 if every song for every album you review is a 5/5

Here's the problem I have with this review. While reading it, even though the reviewer considers the album to be a classic I noticed his tone was measured throughout. For example he said, "The Geto Boys (at the time of this album) consist of, Scarface, Willie D, and Buschwick Bill, and were one of the best hip hop groups of (dare I say it) ALL TIME! First of all why do you have to dare to say, they were "one" of the best hip hop groups of ALL TIME? Were you feeling pressure from your east coast homies? Yeah the tone sounded suspicious out the gate so I look your slick asses up and just as I thought you fuckers are from the east.

It is a fact that the Geto Boys are one of the greatest and in my opinion the greatest hip hop groups ever! Their influence goes beyond hip hop walls. You also said the group had foul language, violence (specifically against women) but when you broke down what each song was about there was only 2 songs mentioned that specifically deals with women. I own a copy of Grip It On That Other Level and the only songs on the entire album that talks about violence against a woman is "Gangsta of Love" and "Mind of A Lunatic." That's it. While extreme it is worth noting that Grip It... is the only album in the Geto Boys catalogue that I know of where the group expressed being violent towards women. But if someone read your review and didn't know they would think the Geto Boys just walk around pimp slapping hoes all day and nothing could be further from the truth. They are one of the most insightful and thought provoking groups to ever do it. You east coast cats should stop judging southern music because even when you like it, you have to act like you don't.

@ajmarv123: I put "(dare I say)" because for someone who hasn't heard them, or even know who they are, they might be biased, and not think that they ARE one of the best, because they DEFINITELY were one of the best. Also, you make a good point on me saying they were violent, they WERE very insightful. To know that, all you have to do is listen to Mind Playin Tricks. By the way, I'm from Arizona, so technically I'm west.
