Pocketwatch is a demo made up of songs recorded by Dave Grohl under the pseudonym Late! between 1990 and 1991. The difference between this demo and later Foo Fighters albums is this is much more aggressive, you can tell the loss of his bandmate deeply effected him. Pocketwatch follows the formula of Nirvana, the demo is simple yet extremely catchy and mixes many genres, from hardcore to pop music. The demo starts off with the instrumental Pokey The Little Puppy, the song is a real headbanger and has a hard drive throughout thanks to Daves pounding drumming. The second track Petrol CB starts with a filthy riff which is reminiscent of Nirvana's Bleach record . We then hear Daves sing for the first time and while his vocals arent quite developed yet, he has some really strong moments. The vocal harmony in the chorus is especially pleasing.
Being a demo the production isn't the best as you'd expect, although the production varies during the course of the album as some songs were recorded at different times and studios. The instrumentation is solid as you'd expect from. Dave plays every instrument just like on the Foo Fighters first record. The lyrics range from moving to downright silly, yet always remain interesting. The best example of this is the track Just Another Story About Skeeter Thompson, a humorous spoken word song about some guy pointing his dick at Dave while in Amsterdam. The album also features an earlier version of the famous Marigold, which was later rerecorded with Krist Novoselic as a Nirvana b-side.
If you loved the Foo Fighters first album you will dig this a lot. While Daves song writing has improved with time, this is a rawer, more aggressive demo is just as essential as enjoyable. For fans of the self titled Foo Fighters album, this is a real treat.
