Members of Incantation? Assück? Funebrarum? Craig fucking Pillard? Disma is a ‘supergroup’ in every sense of the word – a simple look at its credentials will send any death metal fan flying to its banner, and with good reason too. Founded by Incantation guitarist Bill Venner and Funebrarum’s Daryl Kahan, Disma is literally the sum of its parts – combining Incantation’s monolithic approach to death with the energy and relentless riffage of Funebrarum, The Vault of Membros is almost the perfect death metal foundation.

Much like countless other bands, Disma is another element in the huge upsurge of old school death metal across the States and the rest of the world. A simple look at a few of the amazing demos recently this year paints a picture of death metal returning to the forefront of extreme music – demos from Stench of Decay, Cruciamentum, Krypts, Grave Miasma and Deist, full lengths from Ignivomous, Impetuous Ritual, Funebrarum, Slugathor, the list of crushing death metal is endless. Disma rides this wave just as well as any of the aforementioned bands, not to mention the fact that it has hardened death metal veterans at its helm.

The demo’s production gives off the impression that the release is straight from the early 90s – the three tracks are in every sense colossal death metal dirges, their density only aided by the low-end nature of Pillard’s gutturals. Whether or not my excitement for this release stems from my unending fanboyism of Incantation does not really matter, because this small release is just fucking awesome and does everything absolutely right. Yes, it’s been done before, but this is simply what these guys do – write punishing death metal hymns. It’s only a demo, but I certainly cannot wait until Disma pull up more thick and crushing music from Hell’s abyss.

The sound on here is very raw which complements the caliginous and brooding guitar riffs.

I like the LP better but this still rules. As Hyperion said the production on this is better.
