Life is nothing more than a person’s perspective on conflicts and the approaches needed to best solve them. It’s socially acceptable to assume that most of these issues have concrete answers given the personality of the individual. However, an individual’s view on religion and “the afterlife” can constantly be shifting regardless of their current stage of life. And, ultimately, it doesn’t matter which side of the road you choose to picket on; there will always be detractors on the other side trying to get you to run across the widest tightrope in human history. The leader of Streetlight Manifesto, Tomas Kalnoky, makes it obvious with Somewhere In The Between that he’s in the same boat with the rest of us. And with this realization he knows that understanding the conflict is much more important than finding the absolute answer.

According to the title of the album, life is a short and somewhat insignificant amount of time between two periods of unknown. It’s something we’re thrown into without warning and taken out of just as quickly. The band understands that “…nobody’s going to quench your thirst when the well runs dry, and nobody’s going to hold your hand on the day you die” and that it’s an individual’s beliefs that keep them pushing through until the end. They also convey that “No matter what we do we’ll be wrong!”, which is more than enough of a reason to do exactly what you feel you should. This concept applies itself successfully to religion; we all have specific reasons for the belief system (or lack thereof) of our choice. And if it weren’t for the prevalence of social media, it would still be fairly difficult to decipher a person’s religious stance without a look into their daily life.

The main idea to be grasped, regardless of what perspective you’re coming from, is that you are entirely responsible for the actions you relay to others. Kalnoky intelligently sings on “The Blonde Led The Blind” that “Yes, I lost faith in the powers that be, but in doing so I came across the will to disagree. Yes, I gave up, and then I gave in, but I take responsibility for every single sin.” It doesn’t matter where you stand on the issue of religion; however, it must be realized that our actions directly affect the lives of others and our own. It would be hypocritical to dissect the decisions of others without seeing the true consequences of our own individual points of view. And there needs to be a willingness to disagree. The countless examples available to explain how the human race always fails to recognize the positive in differing opinions aren’t necessary. Many of these differences are rooted in religion. However, both sides share the same basic principle: to relay the common good and – above all – show some compassion in a land where it is constantly dwindling.

You all know how the album sounds. This is the album with a more philosophical approach, and I'm using it as the introduction to my two religion (both sides of the spectrum) reviews. Comment, debate, and keep it clean.

This album has some of the best lyrical work in my point of view, so I think you would benefit from checking it out.

Call me squarely in the minority (or possibly majority?) that thinks this isn't actually a review. It would be a cool thing to post on a blog or something, but not really in the style of a review, you know what I mean?

I know exactly what you mean. The problem is I don't have a blog, the facebook note feature is a joke that nobody reads, and users here don't get blogs. And most of you seem to be pretty intelligent and would enjoy something like this here. I'd gladly hear a moderator's opinion on the matter.

I'm not saying that I don't enjoy it, because I think it's really well written and do enjoy it. I just don't think this is the right platform to talk about it. It's the same reason I haven't written an ITAOTS review about Jeff Magnum's obsession with incest and the vagina.

That said, this would be a pretty cool list I guess

This album has nearly 700 ratings here. Where would be a better place to discuss it?

Also, in regards to Jeff, don't forget "semen stains the mountaintops", which has to be a reference to tittybanging.

Oh shit, I'll get it. Still gonna wait a bit, though. ITAOTS is actually the album I'm in love with right now. Been listening to it like crazy.

review is really well written, and album is enjoyable

however, even with all this philosophical approach in mind, review seems quite "heavy" , beginning with such a statement about life

imo, this kind of approach stirs some of the review's elegance, however there are quirky ways to portray your philosophical doubts into reviews, avoiding such unwieldy "axioms" such as "According to the title of the album, life is a short and somewhat insignificant amount of time between two periods of unknown"

telling all these after having a kind of shift of aesthetic- I too used to write similarly

hey I know I have some personality flaws to work on

I've always had difficulty staying away from generalizations when writing and it's something I'm constantly working on. It's a crutch trap I still fall into once in awhile. Also, I thought it was appropriate to add the "According..." line because it took me awhile to fully understand what was meant by the title of the album.
