I just happened to be searching through random songs and bands on youtube one day, when all of a sudden I found a song that blew my mind. I didn’t know how to say the name of the band, but it made me want to hear more. I searched the name on youtube and google to hear more, and found that they had 3 songs online and only 1 release. The name you ask? Vildhjarta. I listened to those 3 songs over and over again for the next couple days, because for some reason (to me anyway) they had something different about them.

Their only official release, 2009’s Omnislash, contains a surprisingly and very disappointingly low 2 tracks on it. 10 minutes and the experience is over. But on the bright side, having 2 tracks on an ep should mean that the 2 songs on it will be very strong stand alone songs. Absolutely it does. Both songs are great tracks and once it’s over, it leaves you wanting more, a lot more. The first song “Shiver” is the song that blew my mind on youtube. It starts off with a slow picked intro before going into Meshuggah-esque craziness. The rhythms are quite thought-out and groovy. Some screaming comes in, and then something I didn’t expect. Clean singing. And what clean singing it is. It’s one of the more unique voices I’ve heard in metal recently and I’m hoping on future releases that the band uses it more often. The screamed vocals are also pretty good but there is just something about the clean singing that gets me everytime I hear it. This band is one of those magical bands that just hits me the right way and gets me super excited for where the future takes them. The second song “Don’t Fail Me Now (Lady Luck)” starts off in the total opposite from Shiver. The pounding rhythms come in right off the bat and come swinging hard. The screamed vocals are more guttural and deeper than the last song and it adds to the heaviness of the song. Another cool chorus comes through with a very short but catchy vocal melody. Vildhjarta has a surprising knack for melody in the midst of all their musical chaos, and it really shows in their song writing, as they seem to add clean vocals or a clean guitar part in the perfect part of their songs to really drive the part home and stick in your head for hours. Their next cd tentatively titled “Irreversible” is due out sometime in the Spring of 2011 and have released an instrumental song from it called Traces. There really is something special about this band and look for them to take the metal world by storm in 2011.
