Review Summary: Another unoriginal addition to the Emmure discography

I never was really a fan of Emmure. Their cd “Felony” was pretty bad and I couldn’t get into it at all. It was just boring and a bunch of breakdowns. Latest release “Speaker of the Dead” is essentially the same thing, pretty much exact to be honest. With 2 songs released earlier (Children of Cybertron and Demons of Ryu) I was actually looking forward to this cd just based on those two songs, because they seem like maybe they would take their sound to an even heavier direction. “Children of Cybertron” is an intro song, but the breakdown is really heavy and it’s an intro that’s actually worth listening too. Too many intros now are just a synth beat or “creepy” slow music with noises of woman yelling and screaming, or the classic intro breakdown. This one at least got you kinda pumped up. “Demons of Ryu” has two really creative (surprising) breakdowns in it as well and made for a pretty solid song. It’s also the best track on the album, and believe me that’s not saying much. The dubstep parts in some of the songs were quite a surprise as well. I wasn’t expecting Emmure of all bands to use electronic parts like that, but I guess they don’t tend to be too original and seeing as dubstep is getting bigger now, it was bound to happen sooner or later.

The few downsides to this album that I’m going to talk about are the number of songs (15 is way too much for this band) and the annoying repeated tactic of the infamous 2 minute breakdown songs. The album is littered with 4 of them (if you count the intro song) and 4 of them are a little too much. They could have just as easily put each of them on the end of the song before it to at least have them on the album if they wanted them on there, but having them as their own separate song is just pointless. The music is quite generic and like everyone else it adds nothing to the dying genre of “deathcore”. The mindless chugging, the build ups to the same breakdown that has been used a million times by now, covers each and every song. Listening to 15 songs of this is quite a chore and it isn’t needed at all. The only way I recommend listening to this would be if you were (somehow) a fan of the band already, then I’m sure you’ll be satisfied by this album.

15 tracks is way too much for an Emmure albums. You forgot Solar Flare Homicide on the recommended tracks, too.

Hell, I've posted on the other two reviews. I might as well post here.

First half of the album is good, but the latter half is lacking.

solid review, although a bit short.

two annotations: first - add Solar Flare Homicide to the recommended tracks. second - deathcore is kinda meh~ for Emmure as there are no real DM guitars, blastbeats or whatsoever DM stuff in there, thus more likely ending them up as moshcore or if you want, breakdownridden metalcore.

I think that's the only song that has woms in it, but even then it's just a few woms.

That's not dubstep. And I don't mean that in a "you don't know what dubstep is" way, there isn't any in that song. That's just someone tweaking a soundboard a few times

But its intended to be dubstep, making it twice as awful and annoying

i always thought Goodbye to the Gallows was decent album that could keep u interested. but then came The Respect Issue which had maybe two or three standouts and the rest was just filler. Then came Felony, and after listening to like three songs i was disgusted and never listened to them again. i guess i'll try this

I hate those woms, and all those dissonant guitar noises.
