The Spill Canvas is the brainchild of 19 year old Nick Thomas, a native of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. His songs stem from emotion and transform late youth angst into brutally honest anthems... with acoustic guitar in hand, he is speaking for a new generation through his art. Musical influences include Saves the Day, Further Seems Forever, John Mayer, Ben Lee, Billymusic, Mogwai, Copeland, Maroon 5 and Dashboard Confessional. A skilled guitar player, Nick also plays piano and bass. In addition, he wrote and produced his album, Sunsets and Car Crashes, out now on 111 Records.

Track By Track Reviews

1. Lust A Prime Vista
Starts out with the cool beat in the background, that goes into lyrics that start off the album well, "In a one fell swoop it became clear to me" But i think the chrous in this song is catchy but the lyrics are way to simple "Crack Open A Bottle Of Red, Let's Toast to this here bed". The clapping beat is awesome, Other cool lyrics are "In a one fell swoop it came clear to me that your allergic to honest" and the music never stops and the song ends, and then you have... [8/10]

2. Stapplegunned
Best song off the album. Starts off telling a story and the drums unlike in most SC songs rule this whole song. And this has one of the best chrouses i've ever heard "Do I have to Spell It Out For You, Whisper In Your Ear" Then it slips in to how he made a pass at her, and goes into a few poppy moments before the chrous comes back in. This is the single of this album. 10/10

3. Polygraph, Right Now!
Really cool start to this song. With the lyrics coming at you at the begging, acatully the lyrics and the change of the pace in this song is great, i swear you can catch this on a rock station late at night they'll acatully play it once or twice, but thats okay cause its such a great song, the emotion is great, as in all SC songs. 9/10

4. Dutch Courage
Soft song to start out, then speeds up, to the chrous which is very clever but by then you probably skipped this cause you thought it was PUSSY our something.
"10 Bucks says you don't have it in you
To Concquer Death And Quit Believing what they tell you"
At the end of the song the dual vocials are pretty cool with the "At least, Im not a cheat, and at least i dont care what these god damn mindless people think of me"
great song 8.5/10

5. Natlie Marie and 1 CC
This song starts of with a calm pace but not to calm of one then it comes into the pre chrous dual vocials which are excellent, but im not a big fan of the chrous untill the chrous
"And your all i need
[Natilie Marie]
After the chrous it goes through the same flow, with the dual vocials and then the song concludes. This is a average song. 7.5/10

6. Teleport A and B
Good beat, one of my favorites on the album because of the theme that he wants to see his girl but he just cant find the strength this is a real beautiful song, with the mathematics involved it makes its kind of weird but it shows that the smarter the Spill Canvas the better. 9/10
"Oh I'm Calculating, Im sick of waiting, to see what this hard work is for"

7. Break A Leg
One of the first songs I listened too on this album and it shows you how this album differes from the first, this album isn't as emotional which is a good thing. Now to the song it goes through what is kind of rapping, but after that this proves to be one of the better songs, on the album.
" I do hear by declare a bounty on your heart"
He starts the fast talking again but this time the lyrics are a lot better and you can sing along also. The best part of this song is the end.
"My god, not even hell could be hotter then you right now"
I love this song. 9/10

8. This is for keeps
This song has real good flow, even though its a soft song it has real good lyrics, and the end is very good. 8/10

9. Himerous And Eros
This song has a real nice rhythm and good good lyrics.
" When Guilt sets end what are you going to do"
This is about his girlfriend choosing bewteen him and another boy and i've never seen a song about this topic [trust me their are many] put in such a good flow and good chrous.
"It's Obvious that you wreek of jealousy."
The end of this song is good as well. Overall not the best but still a good song. 8.5/10

10. Vailent
The song that probably i think could have gotten on TRL if it was a single, the lyrics are beautiful and so is the laid back singing.
" What Do You Say, Will You Marry Me Today?"
The song doesn't slow down after the chrous it was the first song off the album that was realeased to pure volume and it's very very good.
"And i've got this secret garden but you are the only one who knows".
Great Song 10/10

11. Secret Oath
Starts off with a real good old school guitar riff, but it doesn't stay there, this song is a little too laid back for me and the flow isn't as good as the other songs, still it isn't a bad song. 7/10

12. Bound To Happen
This song is apporiatley called "Bound To Happen" cause the SC couldn't make every song a good one, but the tryed attempt to make this song good and the drums are horrible and off key, but some people like this song. 7/10

13. Self Conclusion
The world of acoustics come back to the Spill Canvas and this song is beautiful story about dying and meeting a girl, really a flashback of the old spill canvas which is a good thing to mix it up a little bit, but this song is kind of depressing. But the song is great it's one of the big 3 on this album : Vailant, Stapplegunned, and self conclusion. The chrous is real good, and once you think this song is over it comes back on.
THANK GOD!
Cause it just gets better, and so will the spill canvas over time. 10/10

This is the next step for one of the best young bands out there.

Recconmenned Tracks;
Break A Leg
Vailant
Stapplegunned
Self- Conclusion

Positives:
Really great songs

Negatives:
Need more acoustics

Ehh... so so review. It really didn't do the album justice. For those who are just getting into the spill canvas you might like this but in my opinion it doesn't hold up to the masterpeice that Sunset and Car Crashes was.

Personally I think they lost a lot of passion on this album in exchange for better music quality which in some people's mind might be good but in mine it's not. The songs on this album seem to have a bit of a "we are trying way to hard to make this legendary and it's coming off as cheap" aura to them.

Not a bad album but just not up to my expectations.

Good tracks:

Self - Conclusion

Polygraph

Natlie Marie (Amazing story behind these lyrics)

Dutch Courage
