Gatling - Hen In A Pumpkin

A Review by Donald P. ChodeMaster

Greetings, children. This is my review of Gatling's "Hen In A Pumpkin". This is one of my favorite album's I've listened to in the past week and I really hope you take my insight on its contents with a grain of salt. The album has a black cover with a picture of a pumpkin and a hen coming out of the side of it. Below it, there is red text that says "HEN IN A PUMPKIN" in a rather frightening font. On a side note, I have been writing a novel lately and I believe the artwork shares many parallels with my literary works which are about secrets and sacrifice. I believe that this album is a bit of a secret because you have no idea what's coming.

I was writing a rap yesterday. It was about my feelings and opinions towards our planet, politics, and society. Also, most importantly, my overall disposition. I was distracted by the ghost of my dead brother Osmond. He pleaded that I went to the nearest vendor to pick up a copy of Gatling's first LP (NOTE: The LP is titled "Hen In A Pumpkin"). I decided to ignore him and continue writing my book instead. He yelled at me continously and I was starting to get annoyed.

Eventually, Osmond began to throw aerobic equipment at my face. Although this was a mildly erotic scenario, I knew this would be negative to my health...

"Stop!" I yelled at my brother.

"I wil not stop unless you accquire the required apparatus. In other words, I would like you to obtain Gatling's LP, Hen In A Pumpkin". Osmond softly replied.

I saw my book and I got distracted and started ignoring him again. This ended up going on for three weeks straight (albeit with minor variations). I eventually decided to consult my local vendor to purchase a copy of Gatling's newest LP, "Hen In A Pumpkin". My gut was telling me that I should steal the album (NOTE: The album I'm stealing is Gatling's first LP, "Hen In A Pumpkin"). I punched the vendor in the face and briskly jogged into an abandoned warehouse. The police ended up chasing after me. I invited them inside the warehouse for some lemonade. We played twister briefly and then we went back to my house to listen to Gatling's first LP, "Hen In A Pumpkin".

I was about to place the album in the CD player. Unfortunately, I got distracted by my book and wrote 20 chapters in the span of 15 minutes. It was a mildly erotic moment in my life that I relieved many times afterwards. In fact, my book isn't complete. If you were wondering, My book is called "Secrets And Sacrifice" I emplore you to purchase it when I complete it.

Anyways, back to my story, I decided to look at the back of the album. It listed 14 tracks on it. I was pleased by this number because there wasn't too many but there also wasn't too few. The tracks on it are "Nihilanth", "Space", "Grayscale" "Resonance Cascade", "Psychotic Reaction", "Blast Pit", "The Killing Game", "1001010", "Carnival Bistro", "Hen In A Pumpkin", "Rocks Don't Make Noise", "The Decision That Was Never Made", "B", and "The Weighted Companion Cube".

The tracks on this album span a wide variety of sounds and I really enjoyed how it was put together. While there were a few small issues in the soundscapes, this is the perfect blend of metal and experimental music. It helped me to write my book when I was in a rut.

The scream in "Blast Pit" is commanding and aggressive and the only moment with vocals on the album. An interesting fact about this short piece is that it is only six seconds long. I found that very interesting and I hope that this trend continues in their discography.

"Nihilanth" has good shred solos that I enjoyed. "The Decision That Was Never Made" has really good riffs. There is also a very unexpected techno part in "Grayscale" that I loved. Songs like "B" and "Space" act as neat breaks in the middle of an extremely heavy album. My favorite track off this album is "Carnival Bistro". It has excellent solos over varying tempos.

Well, I've rambled on for quite awhile but I think you get the jist of the album's sound. I highly reccomend to any fan of music and I hope you all get a chance to read my novel when I complete it. It has amazing replayability, like my novel (NOTE: My novel, Secrets And Sacrifice, as of May 2010, is still in the works), which has great re-readability.

I've heard one song off this and it was produced very poorly and the drumming was horrible. Okay musicianship...

This album really is amazing, its criminally underrated. Plus a bunch of the songs titles are Half-Life/Portal references, I mean COME ON. That's awesome.

Yeah, check out the other stuff off the album. The only minor problem is the production but it's not terrible by any means (and since this was recorded in a home studio it's understandable.

This was a neat review. My girlfriend and I both laughed hysterically, as I read aloud, your capable review of Gatling's first LP, "Hen in a Pumpkin".
