Review Summary: "More Than Deathcore", although Impending Doom's style may have took a turn for the ordinary, they remain strong in their values. Searching for their right sound may be the only stigma for now It often takes a bit of effort to name a list of christian heavy bands. Too many of the well-known fall into categories of generic (August Burns Red) or outdated (Stryper). Although christian death metal is hard to find, one band I can say I am not ashamed to recommend is Cali's finest- Impending Doom. I will go on a tangent and say they are the best Christ preaching group since Living Sacrifice pioneered the genre.
All who are against Christ or could care less, stay with me here. Too often I hear the wisecrack remarks of how weak Christian metal must be. Rest assured, you will not be let down. Impending Doom holds no aggression back and in my opinion are heavier than many secular bands out there. They are some of the least judge-mental folks as well. Vocalist Brooke Reeves even filled in for frontman Vincent Bennet of The Acacia Strain (one of the most pissed off bands). Brooke writes very profound and intriguing lyrics. Many strong points are made for God, I encourage you to check them out. With slogans such as 'Gorship' and 'Repentagram', you gotta give them props for their bold unashamed message.
Since the self-release of their EP- "The Sin and Doom of Godless Men" back in '05, which featured a less organized sound and the ever-so-popular "pig squeal" (back then at least), the band has matured immensely. Member change-ups were perhaps more prevalent than desired but a well-knit group kept on with perseverance. The second release- "Nailed.Dead.Risen." showed an extreme rawness and more focused song-writing style. Constantly progressing, the group put out their latest album- The Serpent Servant this past year.
With more production opportunities, this album really highlights all the instruments and cuts through much better than previous efforts. Drummer Chad Blackwell added a more creative side to the band, and spiced up the tracks greatly. The strings are tuned to an abysmal drop A. The bass work doesn't stand out all that much, but sometimes a solid low end is the best choice. Brooke's vocals have ripened into a fury of consistent exhales, contrasting with his former inhale style. Exhaling demands more respect in the game of death metal, simple as that. Not only is it more revered, the lyrics are far more comprehensible in this album. One of the singles off of "Nailed.Dead.Risen."- "Silence the Oppressors", the song starts off with apparent exhaling of "To the following Christians, listen closely"...then trails off into a miry jumble of unclear inhales. So he leaves you guessing at the main gist of important info. Even with the lyrics in hand, it is at times difficult to follow along to inhaling vocals. So the exhaling shows maturing. At times the breakdowns become repetitive and non-contributing, nevertheless the tempo of this album is unrelenting with speed. The main beef with this album seems to be the unoriginality and seeming similarity with Whitechapel's approach. Subjectively, the lyrics are much more creative and unconventional than 'Chapel. I hope ID's next release is groundbreaking, and expect an innovative sound that sets them apart from the mediocre crowd. With the integrity these guys have, they already have a purpose- to spread the news of Christ, the music will fall in place in no time. Amen!

MattRTS (3.5) In a sea full of unoriginal bands, Impending Doom has nothing new to offer. They still manage to put...

Not quite as good as you make it to be, still pretty generic. MUCH better Christian Death Metal out there. If you haven't heard these already:
Extol, Sympathy, Sacrificium, Mortification, Indwelling, Immortal Souls, and of course Living Sacrifice.
| | | Agree with Extol, though they are more metalcore than anything else.
| | | Maybe not explicity, but they don't really fit well into any genre, and their music reminds me of the core more than any other genre.
But maybe that's just the screamed verses sung choruses bit... oh well.
| | | No, it doesn't. I suppose I just remember someone describing them as metalcore ages ago and I never really thought about it.
| | | well start thinking about it

this band is atrocious
and their live show is a joke

"Too many of the well-known fall into categories of generic (August Burns Red)"
go and listen to Constellations by ABR and tell me they're generic
this band is not That atrocious
but there are way better out there, mortification anyone?

Agree with Extol, though they are more metalcore than anything else.
Um, WTF? Extol is more of a mix of Black and Death Metal than anything else. If you had said that of Living Sacrifice's newer material, I would be inclined to agree, but not even close on Extol.
@Deafmetal: Check out Sacrificium and Sympathy then, they're even better.

"go and listen to Constellations by ABR and tell me they're generic"
I honestly have not given this album a thorough listen, but their former stuff seems to boring and repetitive. Good drummer though

"I agree that Indwelling is better than Impending Doom. Great vocals. "
Your opinion is incorrect. haha, Brooke's vocals are better enunciated
Indwelling doesn't stand out to me, their songs aren't memorable. Considering they are a 3-piece though, pretty excellent

Both Messengers and Thrill Seeker are less generic than this, I would say. Not to mention much better technically and musically. And as for:
Although christian death metal is hard to find
Check out that list I gave, and that's nowhere close to all of them. Also, I would say that Mortification pioneered the Christian Death Metal scene, Living Sacrifice was more influential on the "Thrashcore" aspect of it.

I am diggin Sympathy, thanks for the recommendation,
Tortured Conscience anyone?
| | | Album Rating: 2.5
I am so turned off by chord progressions of ABR, technical as it may be

Sympathy is awesome, "Forgotten Temples" is my favorite song from them. As for ABR, to each his own. I can also not req Extol highly enough, that stuff is amazingly good.
