Review Summary: I think Carl Newman is the new Clark Kent

Look, in the sky! It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a god damn supergroup! And what a supergroup it is! I don't really know of any other supergroups, but if they all sound like this, then count me a fan! Oh, to be serious!

To be serious, this is a good album.
To not be serious this is a good shoe.

I used to not be able to listen to this whole album, and that is mainly because before I started this whole record reviewing shtick I mainly listened to new music in the car, and when you aren't really paying attention to the songs, the second half of the album sounds unorganized and poorly thought out. But, when you do listen to the music carefully the intricacies of the album really shine through. Whether it be the multiple guitar lines clashing with each other making me think of what Captain Beefheart would sound like if he could sing, or, what really gets me with these songs are the BEAUTIFUL vocal harmonies that work together seamlessly at the Beginning of the album, only to get all complicated and clashy near the end. The first song on the album shockingly called "Mass Romantic" has one of these such harmonies. I'm listening to it now, and the smile on my face is unmistakable, yes, I know you are all watching me... I installed cameras all over my house so you can all watch me in my computer room ;)

The First few songs on this album are simplistic in melodic ideas, and I don't want anyone to think that his is a bad thing. Simply, because, it's not. "Mass Romantic", "The Fake Headlines", "The Slow Descent Into Alcoholism", "Jackie", and "Letter From an Occupant" are really nice, simple pop songs. In terms of vocal melodies at least, beneath the vocals there are swirling keyboards off-rhythm guitar jamming, cool groovy basslines and deliciously complex drum parts. And the thing is that Mr. Newman finds a way to make it sound like it would go on the radio (not that these guys ever really made it to the radio, but still). These songs are fantastic that's all I can say... Well... Except for "Mystery Hours" which remains a mystery as to why anyone would like it. Allmusic says it sounds like T-Rex, but the only T-Rex album I have is Electric Warrior and it sounds like nothing on this record. I just think it sounds like ***.

Side two is a different story however as the brilliant multi-melody songwriting is brought to the forefront. Frank Zappa once said that you can have many people each playing a really ugly part, and you put them together and KABAM a beautiful melody comes out... Kinda like how babies are made. But, really these songs sound amazing, "To Wild Homes" and "The Centre For Holy Wars" are the best examples of this songwriting process. Both of these songs start one way, and halfway through the song you're switching windows between a browser and iTunes to be sure it's the same song. They progress, man. Really! Buy this record! It's a classic for anyone who even remotely likes pop music!

I need this. Love Twin Cinema. This review is kinda meh. Avoid saying things like, "I think..." we know it's what you think, it's your review. And other things like, "Allmusic says..." again it's your review, we don't care what another review site said.

I think that it doesn't really matter. Start paying me and maybe I'll change my style.

I really like Twin Cinema and Challengers too... But I just can't like Mystery Hours... I listened to it like seven times today, and it just didn't come close to anything else on the album... But yeah. This album is fucking fantastic.

Why thank you derek!

Oh, and you could start out where I started out with Electric Version. Sure there is some real smelly shit on there but a majority of it is really good. Mainly because that album has "The Laws Have Changed" and the title track is real good too.

I think you should start with 'Twin Cinema' but then again, I've only heard that and 'Challengers.'

You should really give the first two a try. They might not be as "indie rock" or "adult contemporary" but they are fun as shit to listen to, and, they wrote some fantastic songs in their early years.

well it depends, something like your run of the mill Chips Ahoy shit is about a dollar. Peak Freens (both shortbread and jam centered) are about two dollars.... If you're thinking about double stuffed golden oreos, just forget about it. Prices are astronomical... probably due to internet inflation.
