7 of 9 thought this review was well written

Essentially, William Barrett’s debut release under the Afterlives moniker ‘A Ticking Clock I Couldn’t Stop’ is the record I wish I could make. Present are a collection of hauntingly personal lo-fi songs which reveal the mind of an artist who feels lost and certainly a little vulnerable. Just take the closing lines of opener ‘All Teeth’ sung as if from a distance: You were made to be crushed, made to believe in love, You were built to break. An army of imperfect animals, All teeth, no hope. This is certainly not a happy album but rather a journey into the consciousness of a man with his fair share of grief and despondency, made all the more intimate by the crackling effects of a home recording.

Comparisons will be made of course, with brother Dan's work in Have a Nice Life but whereas the aforementioned focuses on sprawling epic shoegaze and sometimes overlong instrumentals, Afterlives takes a more focused and toned down approach. Consisting of oft harmonised, sometimes wavering but always powerful vocals delivered over varying guitar work and powerful atmospherics this is an experimental album that will hold wide appeal among those who invest time in it. Every acoustic strum, moment of near ambience or periods of rising cacophonous droning mould into an almost overbearing melting pot of musical brilliance and artistic abandon. This is a strikingly original first release; created by a man who stunningly had never before tried his hand at music.

I personally prefer this a hell of a lot more than Have A Nice Life, which although good isn't anywhere near as listenable as this.
