Review Summary: It's not the Evans Blue many people have come to know, but despite some growing pains, they do a good job transitioning into a much harder, edgier sounding band. To say Evans Blue has been through some changes is a vast understatement. Not only did they change labels (they currently signed with Sounds+Sights), but vocalist, Kevin Matisyn, was voted out due to what the band described as different musical and business decisions. With Kevin gone, much of what the band was went with him.
There is no doubt that the band's new self titled album will piss a bunch of Evans Blue fans off. The new vocalist, Dan Chandler, doesn't sound totally unlike vocalists such as Ben Burnley, and at first it may be tough to distinguish him from other alternative/hard rock vocalists. Without Kevin Matisyn recognizable voice, you may not have even realized you weren't listening to Breaking Benjamin or some other mainstream band. While the band did a good job in picking their new singer, it may take time to notice the differences between him and every hard rock vocalist that is currently out today. The lyrics also change a great deal, as the poetry like lyrics are replaced with more straight foward, in your face lyrics. Not that the lyrics bring the album down, because they fit the new sound well, but they are vastly different, something many fans won't take kindly to.
Even with all the negatives and changes, the new Evans Blue album should not be taken lightly. The sound the band spews out is much harder and louder than the previous two albums, and in many instances grabs your attention far better than them as well. When the album is at it's best, the guitar work soars to heights previously unexplored by this band due to the more aggressive sound. While the drums have not changed or improved drastically, they are solid all the same, much like in the previous albums.
This band has changed to such a degree that the only thing that hasn't truly changed is the band name. If you listen to this album hoping for The Melody or The Pursuit, you are going to be disappointed. SORELY disappointed. As stated before, many fans will shutter at this album and the direction the band is headed in terms of sound. That's a shame too, because this new sound Evans Blue has produced as a lot to offer, and it shouldn't be passed over.

My first review, don't be TOO harsh

nice review!!!
perfectly captures the album.
there are many who might criticize this band with a new vocalist but it is very good !!!
| | | Their first album wasn't bad. I may check this out.
| | | I refuse to believe this is good...anyone else listened besides atavanhalen?
| | | After hearing the first single a few times on XM driving around with my brother, I have to say it sounds like every hard rock band out there now. Namely, Three Days Grace was a name thrown around that I have to agree with.
They definately lost something (at least something that I enjoyed immensely) with the other vocalist, but I'll save my judgement for when I hear the rest of this.
Are there any particular songs that stand out on here?

They were so much better with Kevin Matisyn singing. This is one hugely disappointing effort. They basically try to sound like a conventional mainstream rock band on this one, but the songs are so unoriginal and uninspired that they can't even do that.

Evans blue was one of my favorite bands until Kevin Matisyn left...the new cd is listenable but a part of me dies when i hear the name evans blue. its simply not the same without matisyn

soooo bland mainstream rock

they may have changed over to be mainstream, and the new singer may not sound unique.. but it's still a good effort.
| | | A track by track review would've been better....But ohh well, this review was good too. I like Evans Blue...They might not be that good...but they sound just fine to my ears....Anyway, gotta check out this album soon...

I didn't like it, album just kinda blends together to me. But a very honest, and well written review, looking forward to reading more.
| | | They lost me after they kicked out Kevin Matisyn, but thankfully, he has a new band called Parabelle.

bulletproof is my fav from this album, but i still favor the old vocalist
| | | Merely seeing the 'members also liked' section of bands makes me wanna eat my own puke
| | | out of the "members also liked" Chevelle is great, they have a unique sound i can relate to the old evans blue, and as far as mainstream rock is, which im really iffy about, breaking benjamin is still good, they put a really good effort on their new album i really like, all the other bands there have a song or two that i like and listen to, but did make me wanna puke when i seen all those names because if you were to post an old evans blue album in review, members would also like section would be reallly really underground unique music

Am I the only one confused by statements implying Evans Blue weren't mainstream or commercial before this album?
| | | Eh, this is one of the few mainstream hard rock bands I like. Chevelle still being my favorite.

Harder and edgier? No. Poppier and generic.
| | | worst rock album of 09
| | | Disgusting album. I am 100% sure Evans Blue will suffer kicking Kevin out when Parabelle takes over these guys, which I am quite sure Parabelle will do when their next album is released this 16th.
And Dan Chandler sucks. He desperately tries to sound exactly like Ben Burnley of Breaking Benjamin, but neither is his voice as live as Ben, but also that he can't sing a tune properly. The feel in their songs (the feel that was present in the last two albums) have also dropped so fucking low. At least the guitarists could have done better, But no. A very VERY awful album, indeed.
