Release Date: 1980 | Tracklist

After Bon Scott died AC/DC had chosen new singer Brian Johnson to lead the band. With him they created a tribute to Bon Scott. With a black cover and engraved letters like on a tombstone you could tell this was dedicated to him. Though if I was Bon Scott I would feel terrible if this was the best work they could do for a tribute.

Yep, that’s right, do I dare say that this record is not the classic that critics claimed it to be. Yes, it is a classic of 80’s culture, but does it present timeless music? The answer is no. Throughout the album some very generic boring hard rock is presented. Some of the songs just drag on and on. Angus uses very similar riffs on a couple songs making you think “didn’t I just listen to this”. And Johnson’s voice does not even compare to Bon Scott’s. Though they are some great hard rocks presented here. That’s one problem with some people who recommend albums to you. They remember The 4 awesome songs and think they represent the whole album, while they are forgetting the crappy 6 other tracks. Songs such as What Do You Do For Money Honey and Givin The Dog A Bone are just boring and the verses are just to the point where you almost just want to turn the CD off then it breaks into a catchy sing-a-long chorus which keeps your attention and patience for the next chorus. Brian’s Voice is just terrible and only sounds right with the music on Hell’s Bells and Back In Black. Let Me Put My Love Into You and Rock And Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution riffs sound fairly familiar to each other.

But the highpoints of this album are great. Back In Black has one of the most recognizable riffs ever and You Shook Me All Night Long is just plain fun to listen to. Hell’s Bells has one evil sounding riff that sounds like it could have come from hell itself. A noteworthy mention is Shoot To Thrill, it’s your average fun hard rock song but it’s nothing real special, but still is better than the other songs.

Recommended Downloads

1. Back In Black- As I said, it has one of the most recognizable riffs of all time. The verses are almost rap like with the constant rhyming and quick singing (maybe inspired some of the first rappers?). Brian’s voice sounds great on here and the chorus is just awesome. The whole song just makes you want to move and dance. 4.5/5
2. Hell’s Bells- Begins with a gong ringing over and over like in the beginning of For Whom The Bells Toll. Then the guitar enters and it is one of the most badass sounding beginnings ever. Very catchy song. 4/5

Pros

+ Back In Black and Hell’s Bells
+ Some catchy songs
+ Great Riffs

Cons
- Brian’s singing
- Boring and generic songs
- I spent $15 on this CD

Overall I wouldn’t recommend picking this up unless you’re an AC/DC fan. Just Download Back In Black and Hells Bells and that’s all you will ever need from this album.

Its the second best selling record of all time cause mindless fucks like you preached it to everyone like it was one of the best albums of all time. And no AC/DC is not even close to being the greatest band of all time. Listen to some real music dude then come back and apologize for being a dick and not knowing what you're talking aboutThis Message Edited On 07.26.05
I bet you're one of those poser rockers who thinks that bands like green gay and blink-180-who are bad *** bands
Why do people like you always assume that if we don't bow down to the band that you like, that we're "poser rockers". You can't ignore the fact that it's his opinion. If you claim to know more about rock music than him, why don't you write a review yourself? Oh right, you're an incompetent, mindless, blathering ninny hamster.

what exactly is a poser rocker to you? I for one think AC/DC tried to pose like other bands like led zeppelin and black sabbath. Real music. Tool, Manic Street Preachers, Aphex Twin, Pink Floyd, Funkadelic, Kraftwerk many more. Something Vauge any suggestions for this poor lad?
And you cant argue with facts the fact that ac/dc is in the rock/roll hall of fame, has one of the best selling albums of all time and did so after overcoming something that no other band has successfully done with out calling it quits.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is worthless. They ignore countless artists worthy of inclusion, for the likes of artists like AC/DC. Without calling it quits? Maybe they were just too stupid to realize when things are supposed to end.
And to call me a "ninny hampster" doesn't quite convince me that your not a poser rocker
Do you happen to know what "mockery" is?
oh and one more thing you said i should listen to real music what is real music in your opinion?
Actually, I never said that. Have you failed reading comprehension tests before?

Good review. Short but to the point. I agree with you on a lot of your points. This album is overrated. Not one of AC/DC's best albums.

Shoots to Thrill quit being such a whiner, the guy is entitled to his own opinion, so do go crying if someone says you dont agree with. At this site theres probably gonna be a lot of stuff you dont agree with. This Message Edited On 07.27.05

What's wrong with liking Green Day and Blink-182? It is possible to like more than one genre you know.

I have to agree that this isn't one of AC/DC's best albums, but Back in Black and You Shook Me All Night Long are, IMO, two of their best songs.

I love the album and the band, but I think he's done a great review, and I cant find fault with it.

Sadly though in the arguements thta have followed the people liking ACDC have come across as nobs, and those against it much better. Shame really becasue ACDC are really good IMO.

One arguement I disagree with though is someone said this album isnt a 'classic'. Clearly it is. Ask any random person to say somethinh about ACDC, and they will most probably say Back In Black? For that reason its a classic, because most people know of this album.
Get used to 80s rock, coz ur pop-punk S*** is dead.
If you switch that around, that would be right. I have a feeling that the people that insult cheeto becuase of his opinion have no idea what they are talking about.

Thanks for commenting in an intelligent manner, unlike some of the people that have already commented.
Ok, sounds like these people besides shoot to thrill have a problem, cannin the second highest sellin rock album of all time, over 20 million sold in the us alone.
I couldn't give two shits about how many copies an album sells. If you went by that, then one hit wonders such as Shaggy and the Baha Men would be just as good. Shut up about album sales, it doesn't mean anything. This Message Edited On 07.27.05

I like this album, and I love this band. Allow me to present my views in a very kind and intelligent way. AC/DC are IMO an important group in music history. I believe that although Bon Scott is better, the other bandmembers (specifically Malcom and Angus) continued to become better and better. Malcom has influenced countless rhythm guitarists, to name a few, James Hetfield of Metallica and Izzy Stradlin of Guns 'N' Roses. Angus became a better and better lead player as he played more and more. If you discount Johnson's vocals (Bon is still better) the growth of these two men help make this album a classic, but as I said this is my opinion.
