Review Summary: Aeternum Vale, Part Two.

Dead Words Speak, the second full length from Draconian’s Johan Ericson, is an example of almost nonexistent progression in a band’s music. Aeternum Vale, DOOM:VS’s 2006 debut, came out as a surprise; it was very well put together, and although it drew heavily from typical death/doom influences, Ericson managed to carve himself a small foothold in the already bloated sub-genre. However, replicating Aeternum Vale in the guise of a sophomore album was not the wisest of decisions.

Aeternum Vale was a good album in that it achieved a sense of desolation through Ericson’s method of creating a seemingly cold and bleak atmosphere; it wasn’t incredibly original, but then again most death/doom isn’t either. On Dead Words Speak, Ericson uses the same tricks and unfortunately doesn’t fool anybody. Rather than the feeling of desolation his first album invoked, Dead Words Speak feels lifeless and terribly uninspired. Memorable melodies or climaxes of any sort are severely lacking, and Ericson’s attempt at bleakness is brought crashing down by very uncreative songwriting. There isn’t much to find on the album in terms of innovation; a lot of the songs use similar melodies and riffs, and there really isn’t any interplay between the various components of the music. There is the occasional spark of inventiveness, as can be seen by the guitar solo on the title track, but overall, Dead Words Speak is an empty listen, difficult to derive any satisfaction from.

Of course, Dead Words Speak isn’t all that bad. One of the best things about Aeternum Vale was Ericson’s vocals, and his performance on Dead Words Speak is equally strong. Both his gutturals and clean singing, although not varying much from his debut, are superb, and this album’s lone saving grace. Unfortunately, Ericson did not drop his tiresome spoken word sections. They were forgivable on Aeternum Vale, but the atmosphere on Dead Words Speak is nonexistent, so any mood enhancing devices are left stark and awkward, hence a detriment to the album. It’s unfortunate, but this simply undermines any headway Ericson achieved through his other vocals.

Dead Words Speak is not a genuinely bad album; rather, it’s simply a poor replication of Ericson’s debut. It doesn’t have the excuse of being the single album, no less a debut, that Aeternum Vale had, so the album’s flagrant unoriginality and uninteresting nature are left out in the open. In all respects, Dead Words Speak is an obvious duplicate of Ericson’s debut, and there is absolutely nothing to commend about that.

Monolithic in nature, but DOOM:VS fails to completely transcend the genre....

Probably not my best review; I wrote it up rather quickly, and I really didn’t want to listen to the album again in order to think of more things to say. I also acknowledge the fact I compare this a lot with his debut, but I feel it’s justified seeing as they’re so alike.

Ah, looks like there's no reason to check this out. Aeternum Vale is awesome though.

I always felt that Anders had one of the more tolerable and unique style of harsh vocals in doom yet I haven't checked out either album. Does Lisa sing in either?

Um, what are you talking about? DOOM:VS is Johan Ericson, by himself.

EDIT: Oh I get you now. No other Draconian members are a part of this. This Message Edited On 10.23.08

I know, I was wondering if anybody guest appeared on this or if it was instead another monotonous round of incredibly slow dooom . i pretty much think one man bands are a waste of time no matter of genre, except maybe electronica.

Not really, you can pull off pretty much any genre as a one man band if you're good. Especially with doom or black metal, sometimes a single omniscient member is what a band needs to have direction. And Aeternum Vale was really good, just not this.

The problem is, shittyone man bands come a dime a dozen. Too many shitty one man bands ruin it for the actual good ones. Caina is fucking brilliant and the dude is only 22, I suggest you check out their latest album. Sick stuff.

That sucks. He was talking about this being heavier and darker, but I guess I should have realized that metal bands always say

something like that before every album.

Edit: The review isn't your best but it's still better than most on the site, so how can that be bad??? ;)This Message Edited On 10.23.08

I liked this. Then again, I haven't heard the first one, so I have no point of reference.

I'd recommend you listen to that as well. It's really more of the same, but if you enjoyed this then I don't see why you wouldn't enjoy that either.

I'm going to check this album out later today. To be honest, I was surprised it got a 2.5, but that spews from my mentality of getting nothing but good/great work from Draconian. I'll let you know what I think later.

If you're a huge fan of Draconian then you would probably like DOOM:VS too. I'd definitely recommend Aeternum Vale over this, but if you really love this band then you might like this as well. The 2.5 is mainly a result of this being almost identical and slightly worse than Aeternum Vale, as well as there being far better death/doom available.

That's all the review I need ;) I'll move on with other purchases then.

I wouldn't bother at all with this if I were you Willie, not even with the debut, it's grown off me after hearing this one.

EDIT: Just realised you already had their debut, even more reason not to get this. This Message Edited On 10.23.08

Seriously, with all the homo talk aside, it's hard to be concise and give a general idea to some of the ideas these bands are striving towards. Even if the album is mediocre, you are always able to pull at least something out with some meaning, being at least more objectionable then some of the reviews I read on this site (not to name names).
