Release Date: 2008 | Tracklist

Review Summary: Musically identical to past works, but lacking the passion that set them above the rest of the pack.

Does anyone actually take Rise Against's political ‘propaganda’ seriously? After releasing four straight albums of pretty much the same music with enough slight changes to keep fans happy, there were hopes that Rise Against would finally change it up a little, but alas, Appeal To Reason is pretty much the same album all over again, bar two major differences.

Whilst previous Rise Against records were full of fist-raising anthems, this new release sees them losing what kept them so fresh; their passion. I mean, sure, the Rise Against trademarks are still there - the guitar hooks, the quick-fire drumming and the bouncy basslines – but lacks the fire and urgency that their past records delivered. The major problem however, is vocalist Tim McIlrath’s consistent failure to deliver a performance that left me feeling anything but bored. There were some rare highlights; the chorus of ‘Savior’, the best track and saving grace of the album, rivals any of his earlier efforts. Nevertheless, the majority of the album provides the listener with a lacklustre execution in regards to the vocals; McIlrath sounds like he’s completely lost interest, and exhibits a rather tiresome performance on every song.

To compensate for the drop in the quality of the vocals, the lyrics and general pretentiousness of the band have risen exponentially. With packaging including recommendations for various books and movies (including An Inconvenient Truth and A People’s History Of The United States) and song titles like ‘Collapse (Post-Amerika)’ and ‘Re-Education (Through Labor)’, this album was already too ridiculous for its own good, but the lyrics (and I assure you, they’re bad) just hammer the final nail into Appeal to Reason’s sub-par coffin.

2 and a half stars out of 5

"four straight albums of pretty much the same music"?! what are you, retarded? okay, TSATW i'll give you - it was a bit of a combination of what they'd done before, but the first three sound completely different, in fact the difference between the unraveling and RPM is huge!

As a soundoff this would have been good, but as a review, it is insufficient.

It's too long to be a good soundoff, but yeah, I'll agree that it's verging on too short to be a review.

I have yet to hear anything from this album yet. I like Prayer and Roadside so i'm looking forward to hearing this some time. Length is fine if it's written well enough, which it is.
