Review Summary: Brutal Death Metal sure to leave you Dead in the Alleyway

Putrid Pile is a one man brutal death metal band with grind and old school death metal influences. Putrid Pile is one of the brutal death metal bands that I consider a gateway band, this album is very easy to get into for people new to the genre. It's brutal but can keep a groove, and the majority of the music on the album is infectious and really catchy.

The vocals on the album are pretty much your typical brutal death vocals. They consist of low end gutturals and high pitched shrieks. Every now and then he throws in a nice layering of the guttural and the scream together and it's always executed in masterful fashion. The layering is one of my favorite parts of the album. The lyrics are fairly blood splattered and gore filled, some might find them sickening some might think they're awesome but it doesn't really play a huge factor in the album considering most won't understand them anyway.

Every now and then a movie clip gets thrown into the song, like on Gallery of Horrors, it starts with a clip from Star Wars giving a very errie feeling to the song when the man says "I killed them, I killed them all, every single one of them. And not just the men, but the women, and the children too." Some bands use clips that are far too long for the song, Putrid Pile is not one of those bands, most of the clips are very short and they actually add to the song in a good way.

The guitarwork on the album is pretty simple, but really catchy. Quite a bit of slamming going on in the guitar department.. The songs and there structures are extremely catchy, the guitarwork on Gallery of Horrors makes me want to listen to it for hours, it's one of those songs that just keeps playing in your head for days after you listen to it. The bass I guess just backs up the guitar because the whole album I don't hear it once. The vocals and the guitar are most likely going to be the highlights for anyone who likes this album, they mesh together great. The drums on this along with every other Putrid Pile release are programmed. He does a decent job with the programming. With that being said I'd really love to hear a release from him with a human drummer. The man writes some extremely solid riffs and having a breathing person behind the kit I feel would really bring these songs to life on a whole new level.

Overall I give this album a 4 out of 5 due to the fact that it is an excellent album for anyone just beggining to get into brutal death metal. The guitarwork is simple but very catchy. The bass is inaudible, this is a negative because I think the album could've been so much more if you could hear it. The vocals are varied about 70%/30% between guttural growls and shrieks. The drumming can get a little grating over time but for me the riffs are strong enough that it doesn't pose that big of a problem. If you enjoy brutal death metal and get a kick out of a nice slammy riff from time to time then Collection of Butchery comes highly recommended. If you enjoy this give Pleasure of Suffering a listen afterwords, it's just as good if not a little better.
