As you all know, the amount of Avril fans on MX is small, and mostly among the newer members. I for one, am a fan of hers, and even going to see her when she tours in the autumn. I can say right now, that her first album is better in my opinion, but that may be slightly biased, due to the fact that I have listened to her first one more than "Under My Skin"?. I know I'm going to get lots of posts from people saying they hate her, and she's a poser, but please try to keep an open mind when reading the review.
What do I like about the album? I find the album is very catchy, with songs like "Forgotten", "My Happy Ending" and "Don't Tell Me". The opening guitar part I really like, on "Take Me Away", as well as the intro to "Freak Out". Something I've liked about Avril's albums is she uses an acoustic guitar on a lot of them, and I like this. Not many bands I listen to do this.
Lyrically, the album is a favourite of mine. An example of the lyrics on the album would be on "Who Knows":
Who knows what could happen? Do what you do and keep on laughing. One thing's true - There's always a brand new day.
Most of the songs on the album, if not all, are love songs to a certain extent, as they all have something to do with a guy Avril has a soft-spot for.
The songs on the album have some similarity to those on her past album. The first single, "Don't Tell Me" is very similar to her very first single, "Complicated" for example. That doesn't mean the album is
that bad. I enjoy listening to this album, but I do think she could've tried a little bit harder and thought up something original and shocking to put in the album. On the album, she has a cello, viola, and keyboards, along with the basic bass, guitar and drums.
There are some flaws on the album, and one of them would be "He Wasnt". What's wrong with this song? Her singing. She tries to take a more "punk" approach to it. It doesn't work out, to be quite honest. Many people aren't too fond of her singing, but I happen to like it. On "Together", she attempts to reach high notes in the chorus, but it brings down the quality of the song. Something I don't particularly like about the album, is the same "tune" to the songs. They're mostly the same tune, but different notes.
Even though it's not the most original thing you've ever heard, it still is worthy to stay in your CD player for a while. And even though I've just said it's not entirely original, I don't think you'll get bored of it after a while. It would take constant listening to in order to do so.
