Summary: Year Zero, in my opinion, is the best NIN album ever built around a meticulous concept

2 of 5 thought this review was well written

Trent's music has always been pessimistic and personal but on this album he had changed things a bit. He isn't talking about self destruction , decay etc , now he is talking at a larger scale in which the world is coming to an end.

Today emo bands are growing up too fast and Reznor wants to bring this to an end with this album which ''doesn't sound like anything out there''.

The music on the album is quite very good and is something different from his last 2 albums. While The Fragile was in construction for an year, this album was finished in few months which included touring for With Teeth too.

The album starts with ''HYPERPOWER!'' a marching track with riots sounds looped in background and live drumming from Josh Freese.Short, no lyrics just music running wild and distorted. The first time i listened i couldn't get the idea of the song but after listening a few times you can visualize what the song is all about 4.5/5

The next song ''The Beginning Of The End'' a superb track with a very nice chorus where Trent almost whispers. The guitar sounds very good and is easy to play on guitar by anybody. 5/5

One stand out of the album is ''Survivalism'' a buzzing song with distorted guitars and linear bass line. The lyrics are very objective and is the view of the war by the army ''I Got My Violence In High-Def Ultra Realism'' very beautiful 5/5

''The Good Soldier'' is about the obeying soldier who has to go to fight for f***ing America, doesn't know much and he doesn't need to know just to shoot.Flat and dull song but still very melodic and super lyrics ''There's nowhere left to hide /Cause God is on our side'' 5/5

''Vessel'' reminds me of gigantic industrial factories where everything is rusty and makes horrible sounds. The lyrics make refference to drugs and since the album is a part of a big concept, he talks about parepin and how it gets to control you from the inside ''I let you put it in my veins/I let you take me from within'' Still it sounds damn good. 5/5

The lyrics in ''Me, I'm Not'' are very clever but the music it remains the same until the insane cut almost at the end.Trent could have added some strange sounds but it' fine like that too. 4/5

The second single of the album ''Capital G'' is a straight charge at the greedy nation of USA.Some think it's greed some think it's about Bush.Because Reznor told us is about greed we have to believe it.The lyrics are so good that they give you the feeling you are an angry american hating everything even if you are from china. 5/5

''My Violent Heart'' is somewhat a song made from the view of the rebels from the concept, the members of AIR (Art Is Resistance).Great lyrics and a strong message towards the government. 5/5

Is the Presence found on the album's cover and in the trailer a secondary effect of parepin or the hand of God?''Some say it was a warning/Some say it was a sign''.''The Warning'' speaks about it and it seems our time ''is tick-tick-ticking away''.The guitar during this verse is cool and it's rocking better than any emo band 4.5/5

''God Given'' is the church side of the concept which attracts people on their side ''We're the chosen ones''.It's a funk industrial track that makes an old priest dancing.4/5

''Meet Your Master'' makes you visualise a dystopian nation where you can't even breathe without being watched.Lyrics are more a chat beetween a master and his servant. The music is greatly built around them. 4/5

Parepin is assimilated into everyone's body ''breathe..us in''.''The Greater Good'' is a terrifying song with whispering vocals but it's kinda flat and after 3 minutes you get the feeling is the same again and again. 3.5/5

The nervous breakdown in ''The Great Destroyer'' is even more insane than ''Vessel'' and the lyrics are cynical. It makes me thing that everything you say will be used against you and you get killed.Great song 5/5

''Another Version Of The Truth'' is a haunting piano interlude which marks a change in things from war and people killed the story gets to the point when everything is almost over and people pray not to die. 4/5

And here comes the best song on the entire album ''In This Twilight'' the lyrics are outstanding and the second half of the chorus sung by Reznor it gives you creeps and you feel like it's almost over. The songs gives you the idea that you can make one last thing before the sun never rises again. 5/5

The closing track is somehow a reminder of what people used to do and more ''but none of that matters anymore''.''Zero Sum'' is the best closing track NIN ever did beside ''Right Where It Belongs''.The band singing the chorus are like the last thing they will ever do .Superb 5/5

Year Zero, in my opinion, is the best NIN album ever built around a meticulous concept where many internet sites belong to Year Zero , a movie is under way and a game is made since February and next year should be out as well as Year Zero pt 2.

5/5

Not bad for a first review.
Try not to make it so personal, however, or "lay off the fanboyism" as other reviewers may put it.

Keep at your write.

Fairly poor review. You come off as a fanboy which is something you cannot do in any of your reviews. And really, if you going to use a TBT system and rate the songs, please don't make 10 of the 16 songs a 5/5, signifying that they are pefect. A 5/5 should be reserved for truely one of a kind, life changing like songs.

Is this a very good album? Yes.

Does Capital G and Another Version of the Truth deserve a 5? No.

Is this better than Fragile and The Downward Spiral? No, but close.

But, dude, this is a VERY fanboyish review.

And, yes there is a sequel coming out, as well as a movie surrounding this album. This Message Edited On 09.30.07

"Really good first review. A sequel and a movie? Are you sure?"

There isn't gonna be a movie but apparently there is a Tv show in the works. There is gonna be a Year Zero Pt. 2. Trent's working on it right now.

Only a matter of time before the websites are back up and running.
