05.13.20 | Debated getting a hostel a few times was almost in for a smallish sports bar with an old Gangster from Glasgow but it fell through. Hard getting legit papers there. Hard title/Soft titles etc. And dont know if I have the patience for dealing with some travellers.
You can build a business up for years and the government can just come sweep it away. Happened with many business in Cambodia last few years and happenes with local business' all the time there. There used to be a dope ass lake in the middle of Phnom penh. Just a fucking crazy place. Hippies hanging out smoking weed chilling,backpackers, meth heads, prostitutes, gangsters, few fights obviously but generally fucking chill and just like stepping into a movie but generally good for locals and a place to hang in the middle of a sweltering asian city. The Chinese bought the lake and they kicked all the guesthouse owners (50 or more) that had been there since just after the Khmer rouge. This was about 8 years ago and theyve still not built a thing on it. Just a fking sandpit. Heartbreaking.
Vietnam is great. Had a few rough moments there but aesthetically one of the most beautiful in all that region. |

Out of the blue he starts going off about the fact that he's on the look for two Polish guys in Germany who owe him money for some reason. Don't know how that story ended.
Yeah Chinese are buying up tons in Cambodia. I heard Sihanoukville has basically become a Chinese city. They're trying to build it into a casino den or something like that. Plenty of businessmen buying land and property over there supposedly are front men (probably under pressure) for Triad members from Hong Kong and Taiwan. |

Aye Sihanoukville got it the worst. I lived there for about 18 months and went back for 2, 6 month periods to sort some of the above out. My friends send me pics its just a completely different place now with half finished high rises. Khmers are looked down on by the Chinese Theyre trying to make it 'the new Macau '
Mates have seen some crazy shit clearly chinese gang relate. I mean the russians ran it for a long time but youd barely see them. Was more laundering than any violence but these are brutes. Such a shame it was holden that once once upon a time but thats what happens when you have a corrupt vietnamese puppet ,ex Khmer rouge as your PM for 20 years. Still thinking about some of the fantastic ppl i met in Sihanoukville who got turfed out. Gutting mate. |

05.13.20 | Oh yeah, I mean I'm in the Benelux and it's not uncommon to get some kind of search warrant on the news every now and then where they ask the public to look out for a few people from the UK and Ireland. Most of them from Glasgow, Liverpool, Dublin...some from Nottingham and I've seen a few from Essex and Kent as well. The thing is that it happens some of them got into a bar fight somewhere in a city like Eindhoven lol. And when you look them up, these are not small timers. Like, these are serious organized criminals that got loads of money and resources. And there they are on the run from LE back home busting heads in a bar in a foreign country lmfao
The Russians were over here as well for some time, but they were extremely low-key. Like you said, it seems to be mostly money laundering. And most of them seem to be from Armenia, Georgia, Chechnya...over here and not exactly Russia. An Armenian guy bought up a local bar and disappeared after two months or so. Haven't noticed any violence from them over here. They seem to do their dirt back home and just do the washing abroad. Similar to Italian criminals over here tbh; some of the big boys are here but nobody really knows who they are.
Different from Turkish and Dutch criminals who feel the need to locally "mow the lawn" every few years. Moroccans are trying to do the same, but seems like they need to sharpen up their hit skills.
Balkan guys (Albanians, Serbs, Montenegrins) just come and go; they're much more quite these days than they were in the 90s.
I stayed in Hong Kong for a while. It was astonishing to see how local criminals just strolled around the street without anyone actually batting an eye. Triad members were a common sight with some even openly stating their allegiance at the clubs. Like it was accepted. Some of the younger ones at the clubs were easy to get along with actually. Quite fluent in English as well (most in Hong Kong seem to be). I remember one evening some coked-up local guy raving on about a hundred subjects for one hour straight; like he alternated between giving me a history lesson about the Chaozhou people, going off about how he wanted to bang an older white woman and how he almost got caught attacking a guy with a cleaver two weeks before lmfao |

05.13.20 | hahaha Liverpool My peeps!! Yeah growing up 2 Liverpool guys went down big time in holland for all kinds of naughty shit, one really well known. It was all over the news. That Hong Kong shit sounds so familiar though. Back in the day Phnom Penh was like that. If you were in an a cafe you could just listen to the stories of peoples exploits the night,month,weeks before and the people they where talking about etc Just stuff you couldnt believe unless youd been there a while and knew it was the norm. Heads of Police, Goveners, Generals, Local hoods/gangs the lot. Fuck even I walked into multiple bars with a machete once off my face on drugs looking for some and nothing fucking happened, could easily have been shot. I was so lucky in multiple situations over 4 years there but The buzz is addictive to that crazy life even at a lower level just fucking about. More so when you get away with shit.
Eventually you inevitably even become friendly or piss off some actual real players and it can go a few different ways. Life is cheap in those places. I knew quite a few high ups when I was in Cambodia and that helped me but there was quite a few local gangsters there on then foreign ones run who were just fucking nuts. Like FBI wanted nuts. There was a guy from Taiwan I met once and was drinking with him for a week or so and his friend said 'If he ever tells you about his past...stop him...hell get paranoid he told you and probably try and kill you' he was some affiliated guy from Taipei who was big time. You could kinda tell but for whatever reason was running/hiding.

I go in ask if theyve got these girls and then they come in and arrest everyone. I was that out my mind on drugs I said yes. Thinking I was saving the day . Was only when I told my friend later that night who was like 'ARE YOU FUCKING STUPID!!??' It didnt even cross my head it was a set up. They have a mandate and numbers to catch so they can stay out there and apparently set young backpackers and the like up whove ran out of cash. Fuck. Thats worse than any gangster shit. It was so lawless and chaotic and wild west that you never knew who you could trust who was big time and who wasnt and that crossed over a few times.With the booze/drugs and everything for cheap you start to think youre a king but When youre back sat on your Mums sofa after all that chaos as shes sat watching reality TV and its like nothing happened. You miss it man. Im too old for that shit now like. Im tucked away in the scottish hills that an old fucker. All that crazy shits in the past and you wouldnt be running amok in Sihanoukville now with fucking Triads and shit. You wont last long. |

Taiwan gangsters do not play around. Came across a few of them in Shanghai. Thing is that Hong Kong gangsters are largely rooted in Guangdong and are mostly Cantonese or Chaozhou guys. They kinda tend to stick to Hong Kong and the surrounding region. Taiwan gangsters on the other hand are mostly mainlanders from Yunnan, Sichuan, etc...that just set up shop in Taiwan. They're more likely to spread across Mainland Chinese cities. Anyway, in Shanghai a mate of mine wanted to buy up a batch of counterfeit watches. We got into talks with a few guys from Taiwan who hung around a restaurant every night and they wanted to show what they had for sale. We got into the restaurant upstairs and got into an enclosed room with a round table. There were literally no windows in that room. I swore I could see dried-up blood stains on the parts of the wall. They were friendly, but I seldom felt uneasier than I felt that moment. Fuck I was glad to get out of that room. |

So true. My friend came over to see my right in the middle of the shit I mentioned at the top of this thread. Came to see me working in a bar with some sexy fillipina girls and ended with us smashing a safe to get their passports and getting their luggage into a getaway car before the boss got back and then hiding out in the next town while the owner was on a rampage paying police to find us. He then has to go home and tell his work mates who say 'How was your holiday?' hahah When their idea of being abroad is eating english breakfasts and getting pissed by the pool. NO ONE believed him.
Yeah you just get a feeling sometimes. I always felt more sketchy around Chinese/Taiwanese even Japanese G's/ They always had a more 'official' if that makes any sense feel about them and they were given more rope by locals who were supposed to be big players that kinda spoke volumes. They were Colder and just felt you put you step out of line youre in trouble. I always felt the thais and Cambodias where more likely to just give you a severe beating if you were western. Most dont want the grief smoking a white tourist brings unless it was something major. My friend was running weed through Vietnam/Phil/Taiwan a few times and got caught on Xmas eve no less. He did 4 years in Taiwanese jail. I visited him there. Wast as rough as SE asia jails he said but still. Not a place Id like to spend 4 years in still

Since you're perceived as a "guest" threats of violence towards you are not all that common in China, HK...
Never went to Japan, but I know a guy who did. He was taking a stroll around Kobe and lost his way. He came across a construction site and wanted to ask for some direction, but after knocking on the door of a small office there out came the biggest Japanese guy with tattoos all the way up his neck he'd ever seen. He just took a run for it then.

The owner was some head Military guy (old now but insanely fit still) his Mrs thought of me as family and he thought I was another tourist trying to leave without paying. I wasnt going to visit them even when I went back for 6 months a few years later as I thought he was still pissed with me but they got news to me to stay with them and It was amazing. All the kids running out the house to see me and shit. He said ' No one has ever left this guest house with a $20 bill and paid us back and you pad 1400 when you could have ran'
Cemented me with them. Couldnt have lived with myself otherwise anyway. |
