| heavy music and catharsis
A lot of people talk about how heavy and dark music helps them when they're in a bad place. I often listen to it myself when I'm in a bad mood, but I can't say for sure that aggressive/dark music is helpful in itself. Sometimes it seems like it might actually be counterproductive.
Sometimes, however, the lyrics and music work together to get me pumped up about working through things and trying to change. Witness is the first album that's made me really aware of the positive impact heavy, aggressive music can have. I guess a lot of hardcore bands do try to write inspiring lyrics and stuff, but usually they're kinda uninspired, or otherwise way too obscure.
Anyway, thoughts and recs are welcome. | 1 | | Modern Life is War Witness | 2 | | Converge You Fail Me Redux | 3 | | Birds in Row We Already Lost The World | |

Depends on the person. Some people see the dark themes as encouragement and can likely be influences negatively by them.
However, I feel pretty confident saying that most people (myself included) who listen to heavy music on a regular basis would qualify it as being an overall positive force. I don't know if I could have as positive of an outlook as I do without that outlet. Rather than simply use it during tough times I'd say that for me the regular listening generally helps keep me grounded. There are definitely some styles that I wouldn't put on at any given moment though (dsbm for example). | NorwichScene

09.29.18 | Today is the Day. All of their first 6 albums are worth listening, particularly Today is the Day and Willpower. Sadness Will Prevail has some of the darkest and glorious moments in music but it also has a lot of unnecessary bullshit.
Anyway, I don't see how actually dark music can help someone "in a bad place", it's probably just going to make things worse. And lyrics are dumb. |
