heavy music and catharsis

A lot of people talk about how heavy and dark music helps them when they're in a bad place. I often listen to it myself when I'm in a bad mood, but I can't say for sure that aggressive/dark music is helpful in itself. Sometimes it seems like it might actually be counterproductive. Sometimes, however, the lyrics and music work together to get me pumped up about working through things and trying to change. Witness is the first album that's made me really aware of the positive impact heavy, aggressive music can have. I guess a lot of hardcore bands do try to write inspiring lyrics and stuff, but usually they're kinda uninspired, or otherwise way too obscure. Anyway, thoughts and recs are welcome.
