Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event

AKA TVC15's 10 Year Sputversary. Now, you're probably looking at my join date and thinking... that's not right. That's because my first Sput account was created on this day 10 years ago. So here's my obligatory Sputversary list, a ranking of my current top 50 albums but with a twist: I'll also be listing the top 50 albums from my 5 year Sputversary list. I think it'd be interesting to see how my taste has (de)volved since I graduated high school. And since I've finally graduated college, why not? Seems rather fitting. Two constraints while making this ranking: No artist repeats and no albums released in the 2020s (with one important exception)
1Manic Street Preachers
The Holy Bible

Original spot: The same damn album

To this day remains the greatest album I’ve ever heard and I still fail to find the words to describe how much it means to me and how much it’s shaped my outlook on life. More misanthropic than every black metal album I’ve heard combined, I still find The Holy Bible remains as emotionally visceral as the first time I heard it.
2Failure
Fantastic Planet

Original spot: Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

It’s kinda ironic this album displaced In the Aeroplane Over the Sea in this ranking. While Aeroplane is rather whimsical, Fantastic Planet is anything but. As pretentious as it sounds, I guess it’s emblematic of how much I’ve changed as a person in 5 years. Gone is that 18 year old kid excited who was excited to venture out into the world and experience college along with the perks of adulting. Now in his place is a 23 year old man who came out the other side of the emotional rollercoaster that is college more jaded than he could have ever imagined. But all things considered, I wouldn’t trade these past 5 years for the world.
3The Cure
Disintegration

Original spot: Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come

Couldn’t ask for a better album to have as a birthday buddy. Looking back at my top 50 list from my 5th Sputversary list, I’m pretty shocked to not see Disintegration anywhere on there. I guess it was a grower for a longer time than I thought it was.
4Linkin Park
A Thousand Suns

Original spot: Jane’s Addiction - Nothing’s Shocking

If you know you know. I owe my whole taste to A Thousand Suns.
5Ulver
Nattens Madrigal

Original spot: Mayhem - Live in Leipzig

The album that got me into black metal, and has only gotten better as I became more of a black metal fan. To this day, I don't think there's anything quite like Nattens Madrigal in sound or the emotion it invokes in me.
6Weyes Blood
Titanic Rising

Original spot: Linkin Park - A Thousand Suns

Possibly the most perfect pop album I’ve heard. Blends Beatles-esque psych pop without sounding like a stale pastiche. Songwriting front to back is just sounds so effortless.
7Oceansize
Frames

Original spot: Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space

The fact that Nothing’s Shocking would lose a place in my top 10 by a band named after the song Ocean Size is kinda poetic. This is, indeed, a huge sounding album, but one that is unmatched in emotion. Best prog album ever made?
8Hum
Downward Is Heavenward

Original spot: Today is the Day - Sadness Will Prevail

If I wanted to trace back my obsession with space themed rock/metal, it wouldn't be Fantastic Planet but Downward is Heavenward. Just a huge fucking riff fest and super unique atmosphere to boot.
9Thought Industry
Short Wave on a Cold Day

Original spot: Prurient - Frozen Niagara Falls

One of the most important discoveries I made through RYM and I can't begin to describe just how much this album means to me now. It soundtracked one of the hardest classes I've taken over a summer (organic chemistry I) and it's been stuck on me since. At this point The Waitress In The Bar Orbiting Lo has got to be one of my most scrobbled songs.
10Spiritualized
Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space

Original spot: Fleetwood Mac - Rumours

The ultimate breakup album. This album is the aural equivalent of a shoulder to cry on when things are on the rocks.
11Misfits
Static Age

Original spot: Boris - Pink
12Rudimentary Peni
Death Church

Original spot: Marilyn Manson - Holy Wood
13Agalloch
Ashes Against the Grain

Original spot: Tears for Fears - The Seeds of Love

Sadness Will Prevail

Fear of a Blank Planet

The Fall of Hearts

19Tears for Fears
The Seeds of Love

Original spot: David Bowie - Young Americans
26Anacrusis
Screams and Whispers

Original spot: The Beatles - The White Album
27Hatchie
Giving the World Away

Original spot: Ulver - Nattens Madrigal

This album soundtracked my week leading up to my graduation, yeah of course I was gonna make an exception to the no 2020 album rule! I can't listen to this album and NOT smile (and maybe even a little teary eyed).
