how is this in any way relevant to him being overrated as a DIRECTOR |
Skull917
05.25.14 | You can't say Kubrick is the best, because there's no absolute objectivity in art. Kubrick is considered one of the best and that's not being overrated. There are many others that are considered equal to him in terms of filmmaking. It's not like popular music where everyone says Beatles where in fact they've made 2 decent albums. Name comes a long way in art but sometimes it's deserving. But idolising people is still stupid. |
hikingmetalpunk
05.25.14 | kubrick's the greatest for a reason.
brando was excellent in godfather but his best performance was obvs "on the waterfront". |
NorthernSkylark
05.25.14 | I don't think I'll ever really "get" LVT's movies - that's exactly why I like them so much. Melancholia is my favourite, but Antichrist is a close second. Often directors don't want any mystery, they wanna explain everything so as not to worry about the upcoming Q&A (as you might know he doesn't attend these anymore). Unfortunately I haven't watched Nymphomaniac yet, but the trailers I've seen were spectacular. But I can see why people would find his use of symbolics redundant, though I don't see it that way at all. |

TalonsOfFire
05.25.14 | It's just a well made action movie with a neat twist why do people have to over analyze it and go up their own asses over it |
titanslayer
05.25.14 | I don't mind if a movie has a plot hole here and there, or a few scenes that don't make sense as long as the rest of the movie is really good. But inception is just full of plot holes, and half the movie breaks the "rules" that they made at the beginning of the movie |
TalonsOfFire
05.25.14 | What rules were those? I saw the movie 7 times and as far as I can tell it mostly makes everything up as it goes along |
titanslayer
05.25.14 | The rules about getting "kicked" and even though it didn't break a rule limbo was really stupid.
At the beginning of the movie they say that you have to fall (or get wet) in the level above the one
you are in to wake up from that level of the dream.
In the snow fortress area they kick themselves out of the dream by falling on the level they are in
(or die if you aren't really really sedated). Not the level above (the hotel)
And when the van crashes shouldn't Arthur get woken up from the hotel part of the dream?
Also they needed to stay alive because getting killed would send them to limbo, but so what if they
go to limbo? All you have to do to get out of limbo is die again so is it really a big deal if you
go to limbo?
And the biggest problem in the movie is the ending. At the end they are all in the city level of the
dream, but they are going to be stuck on that level for several weeks of dream time while the
Fischer's subconscious tries to kill them over and over. How is that a good ending?
There's plenty of other things wrong with the movie but I really don't know if I want to go into it. |
TalonsOfFire
05.25.14 | So they establish some vague rules in the beginning and basically discount them and make everything up as they go along,
but it doesn't really matter because the main emotional thrust of it is Leo's character accepting his wife's death from his dream
world shenanigans and not blaming himself for it anymore, the rest doesn't really matter |

05.26.14 | idk if i could pick a fav director (like i said im a massive movie pleb) but i really like stuff by stan kubrick, wes anderson and the coen bros.
oh and re: the list title... I think Nolan's films in general range from pretty good to downright boring and shitty. don't get why people suck his dick constantly. same with Tarantino except I do love a few of his movies. |

05.26.14 | re: joss whedon: most of his stuff is annoying ironic fedora humour garbage but for some reason avengers captured the essence of comics perfectly for me, the script i thought was particularly well done |
PitchforkArms
05.26.14 | avengers was fun
i do love tarantino... always have |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.26.14 | tarantino and nolan are brilliant for blackbox directors
put them in a whitebox and they look like chumps
thats all i have to say for those two
@pitchfork one of my favourite movies ever. you should check out bully. |
PitchforkArms
05.26.14 | i think nolans two really great ones are memento and prestige, everything else is what you said demi |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.26.14 | "but for some reason avengers captured the essence of comics perfectly for me, the script i thought was particularly well done"
nah. avengers was great mindless and completely shallow entertainment. which is all it needed to be, so thats why it succeeded. but i prefer comic films with a bit of depth, something the new x-men movie killed it at holy fuck best marvel movie easy |
PitchforkArms
05.26.14 | will do.
oh and yeah I love Joseph Gordon Levitt to death...the man makes me feel big-time.
and hey man i feel like tarantino has way more crossover into white-box than people give him credit for. maybe not for depth and symbolism, but at least for the heavy stylization. if you toss in wes anderson, then i think tarantino deserves a spot in there as well |
demigod!
05.26.14 | "tarantino and nolan are brilliant for blackbox directors
put them in a whitebox and they look like chumps"
i can get behind this
re: memento... idk man. i've tried that movie time and time again and it bored the shit out of me. my favourite Nolan film was actually Dark Knight Rises, believe it or not... but it's still not a masterpiece
seeing new X-Men this weekend so fuckin stoked!! Didn't see the last one though, should I? |

tarantino is borderline. some of his films definitely far less than others *ehem kill bill*
wes anderson is a brilliant fuck |
demigod!
05.26.14 | tarantinos recent films have been pretty shallow imo, they're fun and enjoyable but i dont think theyre all that symbolic or deep... still, cream of the blackbox crop, i guess |

Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.26.14 | dark knight rises was great
@demi if you are talking about first class then yeah u need to see that first but if you are talking about the wolverine then no u dont really need to see it beforehand
@pitchfork yes it blew all of the other x-men movies out of the water while simultaneously redeeming even the shittest of the *ehem origins and last stand*. They really pulled everything together in the perfect way and made the entire franchise worth it. cant wait for the next one though holy fuck, apocalypse is my favourite villain of all time |
PitchforkArms
05.26.14 | weel obviously kill bill is just mindless violence but its just so fun. but Pulp and Reservoir are phenomenal, and being truly honest i can watch Inglorious over and over. Django was very well written as well |
PitchforkArms
05.26.14 | and as far as anderson goes... EVERYONE FORGETS ABOUT FANTASTIC MR FOX OMG I WOULD DIE FOR THAT MOVIE IT MAKES ME COMPLETE |
demigod!
05.26.14 | didn't get the django or inglorious hype really, thought kill bill was more entertaining and had a more engaging storyline. the latter 2 i felt just dragged on for so much longer than necessary
but yeah resevoir dogs and pulp fiction are classic |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.26.14 | kill bill 1 and 2 are both like my least favourite of his easy
inglorious was amazing

05.26.14 | hopper v walken sicilian scene is a masterclass
wish QT had directed NBK, he would have done the film so much more justice than oliver stone |
demigod!
05.26.14 | interesting, i fuckin love spidey so i'll have to give them a shot. i quite liked raimi's spidey trilogy though (yes even the 3rd to a degree; have some major MAJOR qualms with it (venom...) but i thought it was enjoyable, if rather asinine)
also, what'd you think of winter soldier?
|
PitchforkArms
05.26.14 | Ugh I thought amazing spider man 2 was pretty bad. It had a lot of really forced dialogue, like they were trying to set up a one-liner every sentence, and it made it a little cringe-worthy.
Winter soldier was good for what it was. Profusely bad-ass. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.26.14 | nah oliver stone did natural born killers perfectly but its still my least fav of those 3 movies
@demi i fucking HATE raimi's trilogy. oh my god. will be interesting to hear what you think of the new ones. they are more colorful and they do parkers personality much more justice imo. plus emma stone is like, so hot i cant even handle. and the villain choices have been better (fucking lol sandman holy fuck of all the villains oh my dear god) and there are so many references and set ups to the rest of spideys villains and universe that the inner fanboy cant do anything but prejac a little every 20 minutes
didn't see winter soldier but to be honest, the first captain america movie changed my mind about capt. i used to think he was a fucking doucher but that movie was funny and fun and it made me give cap a second chance and now after reading comics with the avengers in them and such i find that he's actually one of the least retarded, neurotic, and ultimately more damaging to the planet than helpful of the group of asinine shitheads he associates with
goddamn i think the best thing thats ever happened in comic books ever is watching rogue kick the shit out of multiple avengers by herself on multiple occasions. |
PitchforkArms
05.26.14 | To me, raimis spider man movies go from good, to not bad, to bad |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.26.14 | raimis spider man movies for me go from the second worst superhero movie ive ever seen to the fourth worst to the fifth worst |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.26.14 | i could be exaggerating a bit
iron man 3 is the worst tho easy |
PitchforkArms
05.26.14 | Iron man 3 is cringe worthy, I never thought it would be so, dare I say it, faggy.. |
demigod!
05.26.14 | yea, winter solider was super badass for what it was. plus I really liked Black Widow and Nick Fury's roles in the story, they seemed more fleshed out and less peripheral than their previous incarnations (esp Widow). It's a big step up from Cap 1 (which was good, but nothing remarkable) and well worth seeing if you like the character. only real gripe i had was who they chose to play the winter solider himself, he looked like some kind of final fantasy emo douche
idk man, i got lots of nostalgia for that trilogy so i can dig it, but that aside i thought the first two were great (albeit flawed). I will admit that Tobey was a fucking horrible Spidey, and Kirsten Dunst was a terrible Mary-Jane but pretty much everything else in the first two films was done pretty well, especially the casting for the villains.
"goddamn i think the best thing thats ever happened in comic books ever is watching rogue kick the shit out of multiple avengers by herself on multiple occasions."
damn i need to see this... Rogue's one of my favourite X-Men, and superheroes in general. such a badass character. and yea X-Men >>> Avengers, but i still like both |
demigod!
05.26.14 | i didn't think they could fuck up iron man that hard : / first 2 were great. haven't seen 3 yet but idk if i can bring myself to... |
PitchforkArms
05.26.14 | I think Dunst is cute as fuck ;)
And yeah the winter sdoer looked like a fairy fag without his mask |
demigod!
05.26.14 | dunst is okay but she's def not who i would cast as mary jane. just didnt feel like i was actually watching mary jane but rather some random chick who said "tiger" often and that peter wanted to bang |

05.26.14 | "Iron man 3 is cringe worthy, I never thought it would be so, dare I say it, faggy.."
lol. also from a comic perspective... THEY FUCKED UP. HARD. and im not one to usually be all nit picky about artistic vision. i mean im a huge batman fan and i liked dark knight rises bane a tonne so that says something. but iron man 3. you. fucked. up.
@demi yeah i wanted to see it in theaters it looks good. to be honest falcon is like, the cyborg of the avengers, some black guy they throw in for diversity even though the character himself really sucks. hopefully he'll be better on film incarnation.
i didnt mind kirsten dunst as mj but only cuz i think shes really hot
as for the x-men vs avengers thing, all my favourite marvel characters are mutants pretty much except for spiderman. and 90% of the best avengers are also x-men or ex x-men (wolverine, havok, rogue, sunfire, quicksilver, scarlet witch, beast etc etc etc). and all the best avengers are like b-list avengers like moonknight, spidey and vision. mutant pride forever!!!!! |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.26.14 | "i didn't think they could fuck up iron man that hard : / first 2 were great. haven't seen 3 yet but idk if i can bring myself to..."
dont do it. its worse than even daredevil and green lantern.... and spiderman 3 |
Rowan5215
05.26.14 | @demi Idk dude, they're both masterpieces. I love Silence but Red Dragon is more interesting in terms of plot, acting, character to me any day |
ZombicidalMan
05.26.14 | x-men indeed are the best characters overall. and I actually enjoyed the last wolverine movie, but origins is right up there with spider-man 3 |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.26.14 | yeah the wolverine was decent, i wanna fuck viper
but yeah origins is pretty low on the marvel movie list |
ZombicidalMan
05.26.14 | viper was hot but her supervillain outfit was so terrible |
ZombicidalMan
05.26.14 | then again I just used supervillain outfit in a completely serious context so idk which is worse |

05.26.14 | dude. her supervillain costume was spot on;

05.26.14 | Well, I agree with 1. |
ZombicidalMan
05.26.14 | I think it just ended up looking kind if flimsy, not like the cool combat leather of the comics. I guess the design was good but the material was bad? Idk who cares
Future Past nailed all the costumes pretty well, awesome sentinels in both future and past forms. Even though Raimi Spider-Man was bad it did the costumes justice imo. And I still think Hellboy has some of the best makeup and outfits from any superhero films |
Deviant.
05.26.14 | "At the beginning of the movie they say that you have to fall (or get wet) in the level above the one you are in to wake up from that level of the dream. In the snow fortress area they kick themselves out of the dream by falling on the level they are in (or die if you aren't really really sedated). Not the level above (the hotel)"
The snow fortress was the last level of created dream space. And they kick themselves in both the hotel and bridge sequence as well |
TalonsOfFire
05.26.14 | Yeah if I remember correctly they leave one person behind in each level to kick them awake at the same time so that they all wake up on the plane within seconds at the end |

i dunno it made me want to fuck so thats pretty good
"Future Past nailed all the costumes pretty well"
x-men movies are not known for doing the characters costumes justice (or at all) but yeah the future x-men in the new movies looked dope as fuck as far as it goes.
"Even though Raimi Spider-Man was bad it did the costumes justice imo."
hell no, the green goblin costume was terrible and spidermans costume looked retarded. venom looked decent i guess and dococ was ok. they did sandman justice with the striped shirt but i mean who cares cuz sandman is pretty much the worst spiderman villain there is |
