Hell

Frivolous

Friv took the blacked sludge route for this round. “Hell” doesn’t mess around. Riffs march forward in all their grimey, heavy, crushing glory. The vocals are pretty distorted and were actually a big plus here. I had a grin on my face for nearly the whole album, this was very well done metal deliciousness. It doesn’t do much to separate itself from its contemporaries but sometimes you just want the good stuff and that’s it.

Highlights: “Machitikos” and “SubOdin”

3.8

Transcendence into the Peripheral

granitenotebook

Granitenotebook takes up his fellow m/ heads’ offer and recs me diSEMBOWELMENT. It was a risky rec but it ended up being a solid one. The production was my main gripe but the instrumentation and seriously heavy as balls nature of this album propelled the score. In a shocking twist, i actually liked some of the bm aspects of this album over the doomy ones.

Highlights: “Your Prophetic Throne of Ivory” and “The Spirits of the Tall Hills”

Infrared Horizon

FullOfSounds

“Infrared Horizon” is a big ol’ brutal technical death metal bonanza. What made this a step above other technical death metal i’ve heard is that it doesn't feel wank-y or showy. The hints of black metal in here were a cool touch and the insanely aggressive guttural vocals are super. I can’t say i know any of the lyrics but this is supposed to be a concept album about machines? That’s pretty neat.

Highlights: “Static Shattering” and “Vacant Explorer”

5Peste Noire
Ballade cuntre lo Anemi francor

Ovrot

So this was way better than i thought it was gonna be. It’s a folky black metal album at its roots but it’s really more than just that. The album is deranged and felt like an adventure, shifting from different moods and utilizing some nifty gurgly bm shrieks. I think im getting closer to the type of black metal i like. Maybe not 100% there but a step in the right direction for sure.

Highlights: “La Mesniee Mordrissoire” and “Rance Black Metal de France”

3.5
