| Tom Waits Ranked
I'll update these with descriptions when I can. | 16 | | Tom Waits Foreign Affairs | 15 | | Tom Waits The Black Rider | 14 | | Tom Waits Bad As Me | 13 | | Tom Waits Blue Valentine | 12 | | Tom Waits Heartattack and Vine | 11 | | Tom Waits Alice | 10 | | Tom Waits Franks Wild Years | 9 | | Tom Waits Closing Time | 8 | | Tom Waits Blood Money | 7 | | Tom Waits Real Gone | 6 | | Tom Waits Swordfishtrombones | 5 | | Tom Waits The Heart of Saturday Night | 4 | | Tom Waits Mule Variations | 3 | | Tom Waits Small Change
My favorite slice of work from Tom in his early years where he was a more direct singer/songwriter type of guy. Here you get an early look at him getting a little more gruff and experimental with his vocal delivery - he's a slam poet on Small Change, he's a sleazy salesman in Step Right Up, and a lovable drunkard on a handful of tracks.
Highlights: Bad Liver and a Broken Heart, Step Right Up, Small Change, The Piano Has Been Drinking (Not Me) | 2 | | Tom Waits Bone Machine
Waits at his most unhinged, Bone Machine is a dark and uneasy listen. This isn't an easy one to digest, and will likely take repeated listens to start appreciating, but once you get to that point it's one of the most rewarding and interesting albums of the 90's.
Highlights: Goin' Out West, The Earth Died Screaming, Dirt in the Ground, A Little Rain | 1 | | Tom Waits Rain Dogs
My favorite album of all time, period. Lyrically brilliant, musically diverse and warped, and ever changing. Waits' storytelling here is at his peak, each cut is told from the vantage point of a unique character, never standing still in one setting or mood. Rain Dogs is truly exceptional in every way.
Highlights: Every damn song, none are skippable. Clap Hands, Jockey Full of Bourbon, and Rain Dogs are favorites of mine though. | |

10.18.18 | Black Rider is always underrated imo. Same with Blue Valentine. Small Change is timeless as well, glad you have it so high | Veldin
10.18.18 | Excellent list. Still need to jam a few including Mule Variations. Agreed though, Rain Dogs, Bone Machine, Small Change & Swordfishtrombone are my faves. | DominionMM1
10.18.18 | heartattack and vine is way too low | ArsMoriendi
10.19.18 | Only checked 6 of his albums but out of those:
1 > 2 > 4 > 14 > 6 > 10 | WoodeeX
10.19.18 | I was walking next to an abandoned park one time in the middle of the night, walking back from work. I had my headphones on listening to Bone Machine, and it made the night seem exponentially more eerie. Incredible record | widowslaugh123
10.19.18 | Damn I don’t agree with this at all. The only thing I can get behind here is bone machine really high and Alicia really low. | JasonCarne
10.22.18 | Black Rider IS underrated, I think it's a great album, but then again this guy has 16 albums and no duds, so a few are bound to fall to the bottom of the list. |
