Small Change

My favorite slice of work from Tom in his early years where he was a more direct singer/songwriter type of guy. Here you get an early look at him getting a little more gruff and experimental with his vocal delivery - he's a slam poet on Small Change, he's a sleazy salesman in Step Right Up, and a lovable drunkard on a handful of tracks.

Highlights: Bad Liver and a Broken Heart, Step Right Up, Small Change, The Piano Has Been Drinking (Not Me)
2Tom Waits
Bone Machine

Waits at his most unhinged, Bone Machine is a dark and uneasy listen. This isn't an easy one to digest, and will likely take repeated listens to start appreciating, but once you get to that point it's one of the most rewarding and interesting albums of the 90's.

Highlights: Goin' Out West, The Earth Died Screaming, Dirt in the Ground, A Little Rain

Rain Dogs

My favorite album of all time, period. Lyrically brilliant, musically diverse and warped, and ever changing. Waits' storytelling here is at his peak, each cut is told from the vantage point of a unique character, never standing still in one setting or mood. Rain Dogs is truly exceptional in every way.

Highlights: Every damn song, none are skippable. Clap Hands, Jockey Full of Bourbon, and Rain Dogs are favorites of mine though.
