08.08.14 | Sin City is a must see. My favorite movie. |
ChoccyPhilly
08.08.14 | Sin City isn't really a superhero film, or even a hero film of any kind. Still really great and you should watch that and Watchmen at some point too. Also, can't argue with 1. |

02.25.22 | The Suicide Squad definitely on my list these days |
TalonsOfFire
02.25.22 | Yeah Nolan/Goyer's take on Batman is certainly the best onscreen portrayal for me by far. Hoping The Batman will live up to that.
I saw Watchmen once a number of years ago, was very mixed but certainly liked some aspects of it. I own the director's cut which I plan on watching some time.
As far as the recent DC movies goes, The Suicide Squad is one of the best. |

02.25.22 | I honestly haven't really gotten into the whole superhero marvel/dc universe stuff. Newest one I've seen is probably Guardians of the Galaxy and I checked it out due to James Gunns ties with Troma early in his career. My 10 would probably be
Guardians of the Galaxy
Unbreakable
Spider Man 2
Dredd
Hellboy
Dark Knight
Spawn
Green Hornet
The Punisher
Super
Included the vigilante stuff otherwise I wouldn't have had 10 to list tbh. In no order |

02.25.22 | 1. the incredibles

1. Zack Snyder's Justice League
2. Watchmen
3. Spider-Man 2
4. Batman Begins
5. Superman II
6. Logan
7. Spiderman: No Way Home
8. The Dark Knight
9. Constantine
10. Iron Man 3
Not putting any Bryan Singer films on here cuz fuck him |
WalrusTusk
02.25.22 | Zack Synder's cut is honestly probably on my list as well. I do, in general, enjoy his movies more than the average viewer but that is a legitimately solid movie. That Flash scene at the end... |
Tundra
02.25.22 | hmm lets see, for me, no particular order:
Spider-Man 2
Infinity War
Dark Knight
Winter Soldier
Incredibles
X Men: Days of Future Past
Logan
Alita: Battle Angel
Iron Man
Guardians of the Galaxy
(haven't seen Watchmen or The Suicide Squad, I may watch one tonight screw it) |

02.25.22 | Oh damn I forgot about Constantine! I'd strike Dredd from my list and add that one in |
CaliggyJack
02.25.22 | Alita is such a good film, but I never considered it a superhero film... |
TalonsOfFire
02.25.22 | Someone likes Spawn and Green Hornet? I thought those were pretty universally considered bad.
Tundra your list is very similar to mine, except I didn't really like Alita much at all.
I love Dredd, but it crosses into vigilante territory and not sure if it's really a superhero film. I suppose technically it is. I'd put it around 10th in my list I guess. |
combustion07
02.26.22 | Spawn was a letdown honestly but the comic book series was one of the only ones that I faithfully followed when I was a kid and it was easily my favorite. The movie could have been infinitely better but even with that I was beyond pumped to just see a live action Spawn so the nostalgia for me warrants it being there. The HBO series was far superior.
As for Green Hornet I know nothing of the original story but I thought it was a fun movie tbh. I actually just rewatched it last week since it's on Tubi and I thought it still held up. Like I said in that last post though I'm not really a superhero movie fan and I don't keep up with the stuff at all so honestly I've probably only seen maybe 20-30 of them total and it's more than likely on the lower end |

03.08.22 | Blade, The Crow, X-Men: First Class and Dr. Strange deserve a place on the list.
Also I preferred Amazing Spider-man 2 over the first one, even though they’re both trash |
TalonsOfFire
03.08.22 | X-Men: First Class and Blade are kind of good, but also cheesy and dated in places too. Dr. Strange has great visuals but the plot is boring and too much lame humor. They wasted Mads Mikkelson too. The Crow is more of a gothic vigilante revenge movie than a superhero movie.
Both Amazing Spider-mans are trash [2] |
DarkSideOfLucca
03.08.22 | When Marvel actually makes an X-Men film that is an actual fucking X-Men movie, I'm hoping that will be my new favorite.
You have no idea how rough it is to be a fan of the comics and have to live through Fox fucking with me for 22 years (with an occasional couple movies like X2 and DoFP that are actually good) |
TalonsOfFire
03.08.22 | The very first X-Men is good too, and even tho it’s only a few characters Logan is the best of them all. The rest are pretty useless tho besides those five. I also enjoy Apocalypse in a schlocky fun way, as its not a smart movie. The Wolverine was pretty good too until the dumb climax. |
DarkSideOfLucca
03.08.22 | The first X-Men is a solid film, but comic films have come far enough now where we can actually have a Storm that acts like a goddess (seriously, she's one of the most badass characters) and have a Cyclops that can actually be a leader and not just the but of every hot man Logan joke. And fucking Toad defeating Jean Grey/Cyclops/Storm singlehandedly? Brian Singer, are you shitting me, buddy?
It's a solid MOVIE and they got a lot right (Magneto/Xavier) but as an X-Men fan, there's so much shit that hurts. Those comics are some of my all time favorites, they deserve better. |
TalonsOfFire
03.08.22 | Yeah I get what you mean. I love Hugh J as Wolverine but I wish the trilogy or subsequent movies focused more on other characters like Cyclops and Storm too. |
ChrimzonCanine
03.09.22 | “ X-Men: First Class and Blade are kind of good, but also cheesy and dated in places too. Dr. Strange has great visuals but the plot is boring and too much lame humor. They wasted Mads Mikkelson too. The Crow is more of a gothic vigilante revenge movie than a superhero movie.”
I don’t see how First Class is cheesy and/or dated at all. Blade is for sure but it adds to the appeal of the film regardless and makes it so much more enjoyable than other superhero movies with a black lead like Hancock or Black Panther. The plot for Dr. Strange was probably the most interesting aspect of the movie as a whole, especially Steven’s journey from being a jaded, self-indulgent surgeon to being a more open-minded and mature sorcerer. The only thing wrong with the movie was the villains who didn’t get explored all that much. And yes The Crow is indeed a superhero movie. Look it up. Just because he doesn’t wear tights and a cape doesn’t mean it’s not.
“You have no idea how rough it is to be a fan of the comics and have to live through Fox fucking with me for 22 years (with an occasional couple movies like X2 and DoFP that are actually good)”
Yeah the first X-Men movie is pretty overrated imo. Especially with how slow the pacing is and how some characters like Rogue were butchered in the movie. Plus it felt very safe when it came to it’s action scenes. Easy 5/10 in my books. |
Tundra
03.09.22 | After seeing Watchmen, I NEED a Netflix series or something around Rorschach. What a great character. |
Egarran
03.09.22 | Uh oh, be careful what company you praise Rorschach in. His vigilante fascism doesn't fly well with everyone. |
TalonsOfFire
03.09.22 | I like the Dr. Strange character, especially when he shows up in later Marvel films. First Class has some special effects that look so bad and cheap that they should be in a sci-fi channel original movie. Also the teen mutants, the part with Kevin Bacon becoming super powered from nuclear rods or whatever, and that ending with all the warships is all delightfully silly. The best parts of First Class are young Xavier and Magneto. I guess The Crow is technically a superhero, but it’s like Judge Dredd where he’s more of a vigilante exacting vengeance on his enemies and it doesn’t really fit with all the Marvel and DC ones. I love Dredd and really like The Crow though. |
Tundra
03.09.22 | I like First Class, calling it bad just for its special effects is the most sput thing I've seen today |
Egarran
03.09.22 | Omg yes every day we get that shit |
TalonsOfFire
03.09.22 | I didn’t say X-Men: First Class was bad, I actually said I liked it too but it’s undeniably a cheesy and wacky movie. The at times bad special effects is only one contributor to that.

03.09.22 | If the crow is a superhero then so is Dredd! And TDKR is an incredible movie, I possibly enjoy it more than The Dark Knight. Anyone complaining about plotholes needs to check the IMDB Q&A for answers, they’re good explanations. What’s wrong with Endgame? Btw the Redlettermedia review for First Class does a great job going in depth and explaining why it’s good but cheesy. |
DarkSideOfLucca
03.09.22 | "Not really getting why Dredd is here, good as it may be."
'Cause it's a comic movie.
3,7 and 8 are my faves prob. 1 is a very respectable choice as well, but I have minor qualms with it that hold it back for me. Wish I could include the Daredevil series cause that's also one of my favorite things ever.
I know I keep saying this, but the fucking milisecond we get an X-Men movie that reaches the potential of the comics, that shit is shooting to my #1 so goddamn fast.
Also, for the love of Christ, can we get a Punisher movie that doesn't have random bullshit holding it back? |
Emim

03.09.22 | The first season of Daredevil was fantastic yea
I’m also interested in the future of the X-Men, but there will never be a Wolverine better than HJ. He was born to play that role and nailed it. I love Days of Future past; I actually own but still haven’t seen the extended Rogue Cut which is supposedly even better.
I know The Dark Knight at the #1 choice is unoriginal, but that’s how I honestly feel. I saw it when I was 13 in theaters and suffice it to say was like a life-changing viewing experience haha |

DarkSideOfLucca
03.10.22 | TDK might be unoriginal for a #1, but there's a reason for that. It's not my #1, but it is absolutely fucking awesome and very justifiable as a first pic. That is still my favorite theater going experience of all time, regardless of genre.
Agreed about Wolverine, I'm not sure but tbh Logan might be my favorite superhero movie ever. The only thing slightly holding it back is not really an issue with the movie, but more of a personal thing. I really wish they had Liev Shrieber as Sabertooth in that movie being the big bad because he is so fucking good but was only able to be in one of the worst superhero films of all time (origins). Once again, it's not really a 'flaw' per se, and would require a slightly different script to have his inclusion make sense but whenever I watch it I think, "fuck, what a missed opportunity"
My problem with Fox-men has nothing to do with Wolverine, Prof X, or Magneto. It's like 98% of the other characters that are incredibly rich and deep in the comics that basically just get dumbed down to actors in cosplay with nothing about what makes them awesome in the first place (See: Emma Frost, Cyclops, Storm, Jean Grey, Colossus minus deadpool movies, etc)
Also I haven't finished Peacemaker yet, about halfway through the season, but that and The Suicide Squad are absolutely fantastic and I couldn't be happier with them. |

03.10.22 | The third act of Suicide Squad was mega cringe almost as bad as the first one. It was pretty enjoyable until the cgi starfish bullshit, that was so friggin lame. |

TalonsOfFire
03.10.22 | The Suicide Squad is good and Starro is awesome how dare you
My only problem with Logan is that having the evil Wolverine felt a little schlocky and out of place in such a grim, toned down movie, but it wasn't a big issue.
My only problem with Avengers: Endgame, and it's pretty significant, is that they made Thanos the villain again, but due to the time travel he's not the one who did everything in Infinity War, and it was also repetitive to have them all fight him again after IW. Don't get me wrong, the ending is amazing and very cathartic, but it would've been even better if they had done that part differently somehow. |
ChrimzonCanine
03.10.22 | I think Bucky should’ve been the one to carry Cap’s shield at the end. The chemistry they had all the way from his first movie was strong especially when he defended him in Civil War from Tony. |

03.10.22 | I'm nostalgic af about the original Spidey Trilogy, but nah. |
DarkSideOfLucca
03.10.22 | I personally enjoy Spider-Man 2 the most, but it's that weird thing where I can TELL that Spideyverse is technically better. The art style is ridiculous, it covers so much ground in the comics with so much fun/so much awesome comic accuracy, etc
But yeah I still like Spider-Man 2 more. Nostalgia + Raimi fanboy. Speaking of Raimi, Evil Dead 2 is my all time favorite film but I'm not gonna compare it to Apocalypse Now or some shit. |
TalonsOfFire
03.10.22 | I also have lots of nostalgia for the Raimi trilogy. Blockbuster movies from 2001-2008 are like that for me as a current 27-year-old. |
Tundra
03.11.22 | Ain't really nostalgia, king pin was a pretty shitty villain in Spiderverse. Doc Oc in Spider-Man 2 is one of the best villains in all superhero movies, Green Goblin is also up there, I digress. Spiderverse gives me a direct to DVD movie vibe lol, it's a very goofy and silly movie, I prefer the more serious undertones of Raimi movies. |
TalonsOfFire
03.11.22 | The Raimi movies certainly have their cheesy and light-hearted moments but they’re balanced with taking the general story and characters seriously. And yeah Goblin and especially Doc Oc are amazing villains. I loved seeing them in No Way Home. Also maybe it’s my generation talking but Maguire is like the perfect Peter Parker imo. |

The hottest of hot takes.
‘Spiderverse’ is so frickin’ sumptuous, lavish and hyper-energised, coupled with a story full of heart, and it overall became a great cinematic experience whilst becoming a benchmark in design and animation. As far removed from “straight to DVD” as you can get.
Raimi’s SM films are charming (third one was shit though), but by far the best one, SM2–which I saw again recently, hasn’t aged well at all. It’s almost quaint, but still kinda loveable and a bit corny. A real product of its time, especially how much screentime is given over to Petey swinging through Manhattan—which in 2004 was designed to be (and looked) jaw-dropping, now far less so.
The language of this medium has changed, and now it’s a kind of time capsule, and probably best to be viewed as such. |

03.15.22 | “O shit, someone’s backed themself up into a corner with their poor arguments”
Oh yes absolutely, that is EXACTLY what has happened. Very astute.
Anyway, on topic, the genre movies I really dig, in no particular order:
The Dark Knight
Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse
Spider-Man: No Way Home
The Incredibles
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Black Panther
Batman: Under the Red Hood
GotG 1&2
Avengers: 1, Infinity War & Endgame
Thor: Ragnarok
Iron Man 1
The Crow
Dredd (2012)
Films I still rate, but have IMO, become a little shonky over time:
Spider-Man 2
X-Men: First Class
Blade 1
Batman Begins (only in some very slight aspects)
As brilliant a movie as it is, I never think of ‘Joker’ as a this kind of genre movie; it’s only really connected in name and Gotham scene dressing. For some reason, I’ve never seen ‘Logan’ and have yet to see ‘The Suicide Squad’. Am also imminently about to see ‘The Batman’, and as by all accounts, they’re on the decent side, maybe the above would be added to.
|
TalonsOfFire
03.15.22 | Logan is amazing and essential. Joker is probably the most borderline case of belonging on this list or not, but I really like it and wanted to stick an antihero movie on here. I love Batman Begins but some of the dialogue toward the end gets a little corny, and some of the action scenes have ridiculous quick cutting and shaky cam too. One of the best origin stories of them all though, and I love his interactions with Liam Neeson. |

03.15.22 | Don't know if they're really comparable and I probably shouldn't say this, but I liked Joker more than Logan. |

03.16.22 | TalonsOfFire: “Logan is amazing and essential.”
Yeah, I really need to get on seeing that. I just think at the time, I just got so jaded with the sheer number of Fox’s piss-poor X-Men films that it just fell on the backburner.
I did get to see ‘The Batman’ last night, and thought it was pretty great overall. However, I do think it could have had its runtime trimmed for maximum effect, though. Mostly though, it did everything very well, and had a nice focus on Batman the character, and specifically the detective aspects to him, opposed to him playing second fiddle to his understandably, flashier rogues gallery.
I do think also, that it feels more like an evolution rather than revolution seen in the Nolan films, as time seems to have proven how revelatory they were in defining the modern cinematic language for the character. On first viewing though, 8/10… have to see how It’ll hold up to reappraisal down the line. |

03.16.22 | He’s a solid Batman but they didn’t develop much of a Bruce Wayne character in the movie. Probably because the Nolan trilogy covered the psychological stuff already.
I’m a little surprised at the lack of Snyderverse defenders. I don’t think there’s been a single mention of them besides maybe one of the Snyder cut. I guess they’re already being forgotten… XD |

03.16.22 | True, Pattinson gave a very good performance, but obviously—a minor fault of the film, I believe—the story didn’t ask him to differentiate his Bruce Wayne from his Batman—a massive part of cover for the character’s secret identity… acting like a louche playboy—something Bale’s (often criticised) performance tapped into very well. |

03.17.22 | Saw Batman for the second time last night, and liked it even more than the first. As a Batman movie I think I like it more than TDK, though I would say that's still a better movie overall (hard to beat the likes of Michael Caine, Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Gary Oldman, etc). I do agree that there wasn't a real distinction between Batman and Bruce Wayne, but I'm thinking that is on purpose as he's still fairly new to the whole thing and the next movie will explore that relationship more. Also the cinematography is downright beautiful. Love how much they play with narrow and shallow focus, and even though much of it might be out of focus you can still tell exactly what's going on in every shot. It's dark but not oppressively so. |

03.17.22 | Also agree that Logan is essential viewing. That's probably my #1 superhero movie. |
IsisScript80
03.17.22 | @Enim—In total agreement about the cinematography; absolutely beautiful. In that sense, it actually complements ‘Joker’ quite nicely, as that was an audio/visual masterpiece (the soundtrack on that… holy shit!).
I too place it behind TDK for Batman movies, but I’m confident that it’s a close second. |

03.17.22 | I need to re-watch Joker. Don't think I've seen it aside from the theater. |

03.17.22 | why tf isn't Batman Returns here btw
That's easily in my top 10 if not higher |
TalonsOfFire
03.18.22 | I admire a lot about Batman Returns, but as a story I’m not sure it’s really on the caliber of the 20 I have here. I love it in a way though, like when there’s all those penguins with the missiles it’s hysterical. |

03.18.22 | Darkman should be on the list, yes he was a superhero and the best one. |
TalonsOfFire
03.18.22 | I watched Darkman over a decade ago when I was like a preteen. Remember it being pretty cheesy and weirdly funny. Maybe I’ll try watching again some time cause I love Sam Raimi and Liam Neeson. |
IsisScript80
03.18.22 | That’s my memory of ‘Darkman’ too.
Not a movie, but Amazon’s ‘The Boys’ is frickin’ awesome. Far closer to the essence of what makes a Garth Ennis comic than the overall disappointing ‘Preacher’ adaptation. |
TalonsOfFire
03.18.22 | The Boys is fantastic yeah, one of my favorite shows currently on TV. |

03.18.22 | Now that I think about it I haven't seen Darkman in years, I wonder if it aged well? |
TalonsOfFire
03.20.22 | I would guess not, some things are best left in the past. Like I loved the Star Wars prequels when they were coming out and I was a kid, but if I saw them now I’d probably think they were terrible. |

03.21.22 | I enjoyed The Boys quite a bit, and to a lesser extent, Invincible too. Stoked for season 3 and Jensen Ackles. |

03.26.22 | I haven't been impressed with the new Marvel shows, but am intrigued about Moon Knight. Looks really good and more in line with the dark, grittier vibes of the Netflix Marvel shows. |
