| Zappa - If You Like Hot Rats...
...then these may be for you. It's quite likely that his doo-wop,
satire, synclavier, early Mothers etc is considered brilliant by real
Zappa fans but it doesn't really appeal to me. These albums are
mostly Zappa with his jazz-fusion or dirty blues hat on. | 1 | | Frank Zappa Waka/Jawaka
jazzy extended improv sort of stuff, great guitar playing, this one is sometimes
referred to as Hot Rats 2 | 2 | | Frank Zappa The Grand Wazoo
bluesy and jazzy, some great jams especially the title track, pretty easy to
listen to by Zappa standards | 3 | | The Mothers of Invention Over-Nite Sensation
some complex stuff but still fun on a first listen, very funny lyrics, really
inventive but much easier to get into than his really weird stuff, some great
guitar hooks all over this one | 4 | | Frank Zappa Apostrophe
quite similar to Over-Nite Sensation, accessible but complex, title track is totally
brilliant, all the jazzy jams are gone but there's lots of instrumental inventiveness | 5 | | The Mothers of Invention One Size Fits All
a bit of a glorious mess | 6 | | Frank Zappa Zoot Allures
some brilliant Zappa guitar playing, really smooth jams, stripped down
orchestration and about as close to a straight up rock record that he did | 7 | | Frank Zappa Sleep Dirt
serious instrumental Zappa, if you ignore the vocal pieces it's brilliant, Filthy
Habits is an out and out classic | |

04.13.14 | any proper zappa fans around will probably turn their noses up at my selection but cant help what i like eh | Chrisjon89
04.13.14 | dig 2 alot. don't have the rest of these yet. i don't mind the early Mothers Stuff. didn't like Freak Out as much as most seem to but Absolutely Free was cool, especially Invocation & Ritual Dance Of The Young Pumpkin | ArsMoriendi
04.13.14 | "If you liked Hot Rats"
3, 4, 5, 6 have nothing to do with Hot Rats. With that said, I LOVE everything on this list, especially 5 and 6. | menawati
04.13.14 | i didnt necessarily mean they all sound like it just that if you come into his stuff from that direction then they might appeal too | ArsMoriendi
04.13.14 | @menawati: Plus dude, you're still a real fan even if you don't like all of his stuff.
With that said, 3-6 are filled with satire, "Inca Roads" is making fun of prog music while also being prog music. I love that song so much. Have you tried Sheik Yerbouti? It might be a good gateway into his satire from these albums. | menawati
04.13.14 | ive listened to pretty much all of his stuff i just dont like certain styles of his just the way it is, even listening to some of the albums above there are brilliant tracks and others i just don't like all mixed up together | StallionMang
04.13.14 | One of the first CDs my dad gave me was Apostrophe/Overnite Sensation when I was 10, spun that shit 24/7 | ArsMoriendi
04.13.14 | @menawati: Not even Roxy & Elsewhere and Bongo Fury? Those are from the same era as 3-6 specifically. | manosg
04.13.14 | Apostrophe is my favorite from this list. Some artist said once that Zappa released a classic in Freak Out! and then just kept making fun of the world by releasing the same stuff again and again. | Friday13th
04.14.14 | yeah I've tried most of pre-Hot Rats Zappa to no avail. I dig 1 and 2 especially, and I'll have to check the rest. |
