2019 ambient for comfy sleeps and peaceful thinks

:]
1Kankyo Ongaku
Kankyō Ongaku: Japanese Ambient...

Technically an archival comp as suggested by its title, but it's bloody brilliant. Some is traditional and peaceful, some has an almost space-age quality to it. As varied as it is lovely.

2Celer
Xièxie

Considering how long it is (you're looking at over an hour-and-a-half of pads and field recs here) this thing progress and moves flawlessly. Complements anything really well.

3Fennesz
Agora

Alright so it's a bit loud for bedtime but it's a great exercise in texture. A reigned-in cacophony with a pleasingly aquatic lilt.

4Glasbird
Grønland

Not quite as frosty as the name and art may suggest. The pads certainly feel Nordic in the way they crest and fall but the inclusion of plucked instruments adds warmth. Beautiful.

5Jefre Cantu-Ledesma
Tracing Back The Radiance

Ambient with a whole band! Very repetitive, relying on subtle differences and Jefre's post-production noodling to give it direction. A swirling, lush treat.

6M. Geddes Gengras
I Am the Last of That Green and Warm-Hued World

Based on natural, peaceful ambience but not quite as welcoming as you may first hope by virtue of slightly jarring, searing pads laid over the top. However, it soon opens up and it's like exploring the Green, Warm-Hued world the title alludes to.

7Meitei
Komachi

Sparse, repetitive and gorgeous. Cracking usage of traditional Japanese instruments.

8Moss Covered Technology
Southern Points

A slow-developing batch of pads, windy noises and nature recordings. Written as an homage to the Devon coastline and certainly carries that mixture of wonderment and longing that one feels when thinking of a place they love. Nice layering.

9Rafael Anton Irisarri
Solastalgia

Alright, if I'm being honest this isn't so much peaceful as it is a little bit tense and anxious, as any album dealing with climate change should be, but Irisarri's walls of melody-shrouding ambience are too good for me not to put on here. The climax of Black Pitch is intense as heck.

10Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement
Panama Canal Left-Hand Path

This one becomes increasingly darker as it goes on, as the reliance on nature recordings and careful manipulation of said clips starts to be replaced by synthetic, anxious noise, but this never really relies on volume to get its point across. I like reading while this one plays.

11Shye
Woolgatherer's Pond

A tinkling, peaceful, gorgeous melding of typical ambient stuff and more folky, trippy elements, with the closer culminating things in a slightly darker tone than you're led to think it will. Shye's released a couple of other releases this year which are equally as great.
