SILK SONIC - LEAVE THE DOOR OPEN
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adLGHcj_fmA
In all seriousness, there's a reason I've been (not so subtly) nudging people towards this song. The energy here is utterly captivating. The production is, and I don't say this lightly, one of the greatest examples of modern sound and mixing put to record.
And its sing-a-long value?? Oh man, just listen to the song. I HIGHLY recommend the music video, does a great job of contextualizing the retro instrumentals. |

04.01.21 | YNWA - Gonna have to take my recent hatred of liverpool as a team out of the context here. It's a gorgeous song and always has been. Love football. 4.5/5

Alright, it's finally quieted down a bit. Oh, an actual vocal. Swell, now that my ear drums are blown out. Geez, they weren't kidding when they called this "Feedbacker", were they? I've had more pleasant dental surgery. I guess the sing along is when you scream along with this poor bastard trying to make himself heard over the guitar. 1.7 |

04.02.21 | 1. Youβll Never Walk Alone- Cool oldies song, never heard this one before but it gave pleasant memories of oldies being played during my childhood. Fun track 4.1/5
2. Feedbacker Pt.3 - Sheeeeeesh I would give this a lower rating but atleast i found the noise interesting during the first 30 sec, before I realized nothing interesting happens during the rest of the song. And whereβs the sing along?! 1.0/5
[Edit] lowered my rating for no.2 |
nol
04.02.21 | 2. Feedbacker pt. 3 - The guitar kinda rips and the drums are raucous as hell, but shit these guys need to learn the beauty of restraint. Perhaps this was designed to be THE heavily distorted feedback album, like the album people direct you to if you ask, "Rec me music that will make my ears bleed." But, since that's not my cuppa, this gets 2.1. |

04.03.21 | 2. Feedbacker Pt. 3 - Starts quite promisingly, with a tense, cool buildup. I think at about 3 mins the vocals start and it's kinda downhill from there, dude sounds like a water mongoose at the end. Anticlimactic and dare I say not very sing-along? 2.8 |

04.04.21 | In Her Own Words - Driving electric guitar. Ooo, it is indeed pop punk. That's good with me, but it means many (most?) of the others will hammer it. I'll giver her a 3.2, though. |

04.04.21 | Say Dedex, as the moderator for April, what was the official song we were supposed to review for April 3? Phero wanted to change it to the Pogues, and I changed it on the worksheet. But apologies if I overstepped, because I just realized you've still got Superchunk on the list above. It's your month, you get to make the call. |
Divaman
04.04.21 | Just in case - Superchunk - mid-tempo guitar. Fairly high-pitched vocals. Video of a family playing football, then some teens dancing and kissing the camera. Kind of catchy. Don't think I've ever listened to Superchunk before. Video ends with chocolate chip cookies. I'd like chocolate chip cookies. 3.3 |

3. Irish folk is always a good choice for singing along and this a neat track 3.8
4. First half is really obnoxious, the second half it gets a lot better with emotion put in the vocals, but still not my piece of cake 2.7 |

04.04.21 | "Feedbacker 3"
Aptly named song. That lead guitar reminds me of Billy Corgan's guitar style on Siamese Dream. I feel like that comment is gonna offend someone, but I don't mean it as a bad thing. The bass sounds weirdly muted here? The vocals don't give me that vibe though or the drums. This is pretty cool. The guitar style changed a bit and is no longer Corganesque. This stays interesting throughout. Not sure what's drone or metal about this honestly, it's not very metally or droning?
4/5
"The First Part"
I hate these vocals. They're so whiny. Is this pop punk? Indie punk says Wikipedia. The instrumentation is fine, nothing standing out about it. How is "Feedbacker Part 3" doing poorly, but this has a highish score? This is so much worse. I'm not even annoyed by this, just bored.
2.5/5
"I Would Sit Alone in Silence"
Oh god, this is so much worse than the last one. THE ONE THING I NEEEEDEEDD lol. I ate the vocals, the guitar, the drums, and I would hate the bass, but it's inaudible. This is insufferable. How the hell did the song just get 10x worse in the last minute? It was already awful! Sorry Jesper, I feel mean now.

I've actually heard an entire album by these guys a few times: If I Should Fall from the Grace of God. I don't remember it much, but it wasn't for me. This is lively and fun. Not really my thing, but there are elements here I can appreciate like the dynamics, bass, and accordion.

04.04.21 | 4. I Would Sit Alone in Silence - There's a part in Dune where Paul Atreides drinks the poisonous Water of Life, and through it he is able to access all the memories of his genetic line. Bro you could've picked the original by Kate Bush and raked in a high score, what are you doing? This is lame. It sounds like a boring 2000s "post-punk revival" song. Heavy English accent squealing while singing isn't my thing. Kate Bush's is like a 4.8.
2.4/5
"Nobody's Wife"
90s female radio pop alt rock. The background music's pretty forgettable, but she can belt out some notes. I respect this more than I like it, but it's not boring or bad, so uh.
3.3/5 |
Divaman
04.07.21 | Anouk - Some nice acoustic guitar to start. Decent female vocal (although she's a little Alannisy for me). Then the song rocks out a pick before getting acoustic again. Pretty good. I like acoustic Anouk better than rocky Anouk, though. 3.4 |

04.07.21 | 3. The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn - this is better than what was here originally. It at least sounds like a drunk karaoke sing along song. I too heard a whole Pogues album and it wasnβt much my thing but this is fine. Still, I probably wonβt revisit it but it can get me upbeat at a bar. [3.6]
4. I Would Sit Alone in Silence - ahh blast back to the early 2010s and late 2000s, at least in terms of style. I donβt hate it but I donβt love it. [2.8]
5. Salt, Peppa and Spiderella - this one is a little similar to the last one but I prefer it for some reason. It definitely is easier to sing along too. [3.2]
6. Hounds of Love - a Kate Bush song in the style of the last two songs. I mean, whether it is a cover or an original itβs still a good sing along song. I do prefer the original though and consider this a sub-par cover, so I canβt give this above a 4. [3.8]
7. Nobodyβs Wife - canβt relate, wonβt sing along to this basic song. [2.1] |

04.08.21 | 8. Next to You - Yeah, I would normally skip this within 10 or 15 seconds. I'm sure it's technically very impressive but to me it sounds like they gave some session musos free studio time. This tone and sound seriously negs my vibe, I'm not kidding. Why is it 8 minutes? 1.3 |
nol
04.08.21 | hmm I prefer my Spotify playlist |
nol
04.08.21 | Next to You - oh boy. this track fascinates me. This is a shining, brilliant example of why technical ability =/= good music. And I donβt mean simply the ability the play fast, Iβm talking enjoyable intricate melodies, catchy syncopation, a godly vocalist, funky rhythms, everything a band needs to create undeniably good music. On paper.
So why does this, in practice, have me wanting to throw myself from a 4th story window? At first, I wanted to say inspiration, but thatβs too easy. If you look deep enough you can see flashes of inspo in this track, somewhere hiding behind the glee choir in the hook.
No, what this track is missing is S T Y L E. No matter how many times the track subverts on itself, everything still features the stylistic equivalent of Postβs Grape Nuts cereal. Itβs so bland, so inhuman. Without anything interesting or relatable to latch onto, a track like this almost feels mocking. Itβs like fogza said, this song ruins your vibe. And why is that? Because their vibe sucks. [1.7] |

04.11.21 | "Next to You"
Vocals aren't really my thing. This is kinda lame, especially the production. It's trying to be 80s pop, but has the empty compressed sound in modern music that I kinda hate. Okay, that's only half true. It works sometimes, but not here. Drums at the end sound metal, which clashes with the soul-pop that everything else is doing.

"Big City Nights"
80s hair metal? Oh god, I hate this. It's shreddy but in the lamest way.

Pretty folk music. Honestly, much more palatable than "American Pie." I know it's about Vincent Van Gogh, but him calling Vincent beautiful feels romantic. Simple, but pretty folk with orchestral strings.

04.11.21 | 11. Shake Hands with Beef - Never got into Primus, I wasn't sure if they were supposed to be a comedy band. If a band is incidentally funny then it's ok, but if it's your main selling point then you need to be funnier. Anyway, I genuinely liked this for about a minute, but then it got a bit repetitive. I get what is singalong about it, but I think it would have been cooler if the second time they run through the chorus, that backing vocal is present the whole way through, and not just on the end line. 3 |
Divaman
04.11.21 | Primus - I've never really gotten into these guys, in spite of my affection for them creating and performing the theme for South Park. Their music has always sounded inside out to me. OK, here we go. Chunky bass sound. Mediocre vocal. Yeah, they still don't do anything for me. 2.2
Say Ars, I see you're clearly a fan of these guys - you've rated most of their albums pretty high. Have you ever listened to Babe the Blue Ox? You might like them as well. I find them a little more palatable than Primus, because they occasionally stray into something a little more melodic. But they also play a lot of stuff in that sort of inside-out style, and although they were sort of contemporaries of Primus, I always thought they were influenced by them. You might want to give them a shot. |
DadKungFu
04.11.21 | Sunless Saturday - I had really no idea what to expect from this band, other than they were kind of ska, sort of? This ended up sound surprisingly proggy to me, and somehow both dated to the late 80s early 90s kind of alternative rock sound and also really fresh and unique. Really pleasantly surprised, and I want to get into more of their discography, but this track might not have the most staying power.

Leave the Door Open is a really tasty track and I usually have zero interest in this kind of thing. Production is impeccable and Bruno Mars is at his absolute best here doing his motown revival thing. Definitely going into my summer rotation.

04.15.21 | "Sunless Saturdays"
Weird production. This isn't my thing, but it's not bad. Very "loud upbeat alt-metal."
3/5
"Leave the Door Open"
Very modern R&B pattern-wise. It's twinkly and basic. Nothing really special or honestly interesting about this one. WAIT it's the #1 single in the US right now? Weird, I guess it's better than the schlock that's usually #1. Well, boring pop is better than terrible pop, but why not good pop? It's Uptown Funk all over again.
3/5
"Black and White"
Very 60s influenced despite being from the 80s. Although it sounds like it belongs on a Hard Day's Night, there are some musical decisions that are too modern for that. Like a weird 80s/pre-Rubber Soul Beatles hybrid. Simple and fun.

04.18.21 | 8. Bully - Iβve heard this song liveβ¦.I think. I canβt remember, tbh. Basic 2000s rock that becomes a sing along hit for no reason. [2.3]
9. Big City Nights - feel like a lot of these songs are all in the same vein of rock, but this one is at least way more easy and fun to sing along to than the last. [2.8]
10. Vincent - a pretty song thatβs nostalgic about Vincent Van Gogh. He does have a great voice and can see someone singing karaoke to this in a laid back lounge. [3.3]
11. Shake Hands With Beef - bass line as always rules in a Primus song. Odd choice for a sing along tho. I mean, the melody is great but lyrically and vocally this is an otherwise boring song. I would be more excited to see someone cover the bass on this than if someone were to sing a vocal cover. Maybe Primus has better songs that show off the lead singerβs vocal abilities, or better songs in general. Still a decent song tho so it kinda gets a bit of a pass. [3.4]
12. Sunless Saturday - another rock jam that is musically fun. Could definitely see people singing this loudly at an Irish bar as well. Still kinda forgettable tho. [2.7]
13. Leave the Door Open - oof, cringe. Idk how this can be a hit in 2021 with lyrics as fuckboish as this. He was creepy when he expected his gf to jump in front of a train for him just like he says he would for her and he is still creepy now with his sonic equivalent if βu up?β Instrumentally this song is ok, but I think Iβll pass on the song version of thirsty fuckboi blowing up the message request folder of girls on FB, IG and any other social media platform. [1.7]
14. Black and White - I would like to correct this song and say that I do like this at least a little. Lol. [3.2]
15. Summer Cannibals - this is a great song, and also seems super fun to sing along to! Definitely one of my favorites on this list. Lyrically interesting and Patti gives an engaging vocal performance with variation and charisma. It also sounds like a summer song too - like the theme is Halloween-ish but it definitely suits the summer season and weather. A summer horror! :3 [4.8]
16. Party Out of Bounds - Oooh very retro! Thereβs hardly any vocals in this but would be really fun to sing with a group of friends. Solo karaoke wise though this would be weird. Actually this could be a fun duet too. Either way, whether to sing along to or just listen, itβs fun. [3.3]
17. Sic Transit Gloria - meh I donβt care much for this song listening to it as is but I have a hunch I would like it more live. [2.9]
18. Rain - idk what it is about this song. Itβs not that different from a lot of the rock songs that were already chosen but maybe itβs that bass line that makes it catchy. [3.2]

04.28.21 | "Waiting Room"
This is a "classic" with a great bassline, but it never really hit me the way it seems to hit others. I guess it's because I'm not too into how anthemy the vocals are. Golden Brown deserves the crown, but this is gonna get it because people like familiarity, I guess.
3.7/5
"Casanova"
Oh look it's inspired by MGMT-core. What can I say about a song like this? It's inoffensive, boring, but also pleasant and soothing. I wish this song has more personality. Reminds me of Miike Snow's song "Genghis Khan" which i also find bland.
2.8/5
"Ode to the Dance Floor"
Good funky bass, but I hate how paper-thin and arbitrary the guitar sounds. These vocals are annoying: both the raspy talked part and the falsetto part. I hate how extra-manufactured this sounds with the handclaps and chipper piano and fake ass guitar synth? Is that random background saxophone? I usually like when a song throws everything at the wall, but nothing except for the bass and percussion are working here. Is this dance-punk or just like nu-disco? Who cares, right? WAIT IS THAT THE MARIO KART ITEM BOX SOUND EFFECT? Okay, I officially hate this. This ending synth and the bass make me wanna forgive all of this song's transgressions, but the bad thin guitar is there to remind me not to.
1.9/5 |
fogza
04.29.21 | 29. Highlander - Listening to this reminds me of going to Mediaeval themed restaurants where you have to ask the King for permission (in rhyme usually) to go to the loo. No offence, but those places are garbage. THE DRAGON COMES IN THE NIIIIIIIIIIGHT! 1.5 |

04.29.21 | "I hadn't heard it until this month, but I've known Waiting Room and Last Caress for like ever and I'm not into either band."
Golden Brown was actually a charting hit outside of America, and was played ENDLESSLY on VH1, it was even used as the music for a promo for VH1, and if you've ever watched that channel, they showed those promos relentlessly between songs. So perhaps not familiar in the US, but far more familiar outside of it. My dad listened to lots of classic rock shows on the radio and Golden Brown was commonly played, I've heard it probably over a hundred times without seeking it out. |

Cheesy Rush-esque vocals and song strings, okay. Now it's metal riffing. I'm only 2 minutes in and I'm already done with this. PIERCING METAL SCREECH!!! Can we cancel all prog metal, please? Sparkly chimes in metal? Sure? I guess this is symphonic power prog or someshit. Now, this is just dragging.

04.30.21 | 30. Pelican - this should be a slam dunk for me as it's indie rock as can be, but something about the melody 'n harmony is unpleasant. 24.Golden Brown - yee this one is even better. Harpsichord caught my attention right away and held it tho whole time. The guitar solo thrown in there is gorgeous too. I get mellow vibes. [4.8]

3. The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn - [5.5/10] - Were I an Irish drunkard, this would prob be a 10/10
4. I Sit Alone In Silence - [5/10] - Not as bad as I was expecting for pop punk in the 2010s.
5. Salt, Peppa, and Spinderalla - [6/10] - Interesting sound tbh. Like sasscore emo with some midwest in there.
6. Hounds of Love - [4.5/10] - Generally not a fan of Kate covers unfortunately. This basically sounds like Fall Out Boy but British and indie.
7. Nobody's Wife - [4.5/10] - Alanis adjacent post-grunge affair. As far as that stuff goes, this is on the higher end of that quality, but nevertheless.
8. Bully - [1.5/10] - oh my God...
8+. Next To You - [2/10] - It didn't have to be like this...
9. Big City Nights - [4/10] - Rock You Like A Hurricane is still a banger, but this one is pretty lame honestly.
10. Vincent - [7/10] - Beautiful, heartrending, evocative. Love this shit.
11. Shake Hands With Beef - [4.5/10] - That bass is so fuckin' heavy jeez. Song is pretty alright tho, doesn't really seem to go anywhere.
12. Sunless Saturday - [5.5/10] - Pretty good hype song. How in the world is this "alt metal" though?? It seems to have more in common with classic heavy metal from late 70s/early 80s.

17. Sic Transit Gloria - [6.5/10] - Uncomfortable and claustrophobic but embraces it's own contrived darkness. Bitter, ugly, and juevenile, but that's what makes it compelling. Hype af chorus, even if that iconic lyric is cringey lol.
18. Rain - [5/10] - Also alright, I see the appeal. Dig the new wave influence. Needs more oomph to it imo.
19. Liar's Tongue - [5/10] - Pretty refreshing all things considered, but I wasn't sold on it yet. Maybe it's better in the context of the album.
20. River - [2.5/10] - Literally just Imagine Dragons with Christina Aguilera-like oversinging. Rancid.
21. Gates - [6/10] - Impressed with this one. The heartland influences really shine through.
22. Nomads Revolt - [5/10] - Folk punk is a hard sell for me, this is no exception.
23. Right Hand Man - [1.5/10] - I just can't
24. Golden Brown - [7/10] - Essentially perfect yeah, but not rly a sing along song huh?
25. Last Caress - [7/10] - What a good fuckin song. Actually wish this one was longer. Lovely song for lovely people.
26. Waiting Room - [7/10] - Also perfect. What a banger. I AM A PATIENT BOY I WAIT I WAIT I WAIT
27. casanova. - [4.5/10] - VERY by-the-numbers alt r&b

Pangea
05.02.21 | 25. Last Caress - catchy & fun, like it. 3.7
26. Waiting Room - that is some excellent bass, love this. 4.2
27. Cassanova - pretty nice & chill. 3.2
28. Ode to the Dancefloor - annoying and way too long. there is some decent stuff though, but it doesn't feel all that coherent either. 2.3
29. Highlander - oh god this is cheesy and it never seems to end. And those overdramatic high-pitched vocals are the fucking worst. 1.5
30. Pelican - nice good vibes, made me smile. 3.5 |
