09.17.12 | Alchemy index is way too low and major/minor is way too high but that's okay |

09.17.12 | 4 is way too preachy. I feel like i'm sitting in church. I seriously have to ignore the lyrics whenever i listen to that album. |

09.17.12 | This is pretty spot on, even though I need to listen to 3 more. |

09.17.12 | Why is the Alchemy Index so low? Both records are awesome. |

09.17.12 | None of the albums are bad by any means, I just find some better than others. I don't even like Major/Minor that much anymore compared to their other stuff, but it has so many nuances in the music that make it worth another listen any day. The lyrics are very preachy, but I don't mind that much (despite being agnostic).
It's tough to compare The Alchemy Indexes with the rest of Thrice because they took different ideas and really pushed them as far as they could go, which was somewhat hit and miss. To be honest, I haven't listened to too much of the Indexes (it's a 24-song catalogue and I've probably listened to around half of it). Daedalus and The Weight are definitely some of Thrice's best songs, and Beggars and Alchemy Index Vols. III & IV are nearly tied in my book. Beggars' songs just tend to move me slightly more emotionally, so I gave it the edge.
Vheissu is at the top because the album is an epic. Of Dust and Nations, The Earth Will Shake, Music Box, etc. It's probably the hardest Thrice album to get into (there's plenty of dissonance), but it's worth giving another listen, especially for the guitar parts. Image of the Invisible is a fairly week song though.
@Graveyard you're that guy that goes to and comments on a ranked list of a band that you don't like, troll moar |
JohnnyoftheWell
09.17.12 | Vheissu is indeed epic (and a great album), but it doesn't have the same passion as Illusion for me |

09.17.12 | ^this.
Hard. |

09.17.12 | Nice list. I go back and forth between 'Vheissu' and 'Artist' being my favorite album. I definitely agree with your top 3, as well as 'Alchemy I & II' and 'Identity' being at the end. Those other 3 are really interchangeable for me. With songs like "The Weight," "Daedalus" and "Call it in the Air" (just to name a few), they are tough calls. |
TheSupernatural
09.17.12 | Funny, Call it in the Air was the first song on Major/Minor that I fell in love with. The Indexes have some good songs but it's really hard to rank them since they're more like 4 separate EPs.
And I love Illusion's songs, but they don't quite bring the same mesmerizing experience that Vheissu brings. Illusion might be a little more fun to listen to though. |
DirEnRefused
09.17.12 | TAitA > TioS? They're essentially the same album, except TioS does everything better.

Ecnalzen
09.18.12 | I love "Call it in the Air" and "Words in the Water," plus "Promises" and "Listen Through Me" are also great. "Promises" lyrics always remind me a bit of "The Weight."
I think III & IV of the Alchemy Indexes have similar qualities and work as a pair, but yeah, I & II are the exact opposite of each other. 'Fire' is my least favorite. They tried to go back to the heavier Thrice, and it just didn't work out so well. It still has good tracks, but I would prefer to grab something from 'Vheissu' or 'Artist' if I want some heavy, screaming Thrice. |
TheSupernatural
09.18.12 | Artist > Illusion because Artist has better production and better lyrics. They are very similar musically, but Artist seems more complete and more mature. Deadbolt is a killer song, but The Abolition of Man, Melting Point of Wax, and State at the Sun sell it in the lyrics. Between the two albums, it depends what you're looking for. Illusion is stronger musically, but Artist is stronger lyrically. |
Ecnalzen
09.18.12 | Really? I always thought they were fairly different. 'Artist' is heavier, has more focused song structures and has better vocals.
'Illusion' has a much faster pace to it and is kind of all over the place when it comes to song structure and pacing. Some of the songs are just too short. I always want a little more when I listen to that album. |
TheSupernatural
09.18.12 | Well they're similar when you compare the two to Beggars or even Major/Minor. |
Ecnalzen
09.18.12 | That's a fair point. Between 'Illusion' and 'Artist' and then 'Beggars' to 'Major/Minor,' there wasn't as much of a change in their music compared to other releases. From 'Artist' to 'Vheissu' was a pretty big shift and the 'Alchemy Indexes' were just kind of in their own little world. Then there is 'Identity Crisis,' which doesn't really sound like any of their other stuff either. It seems more like a collection of songs from a band just starting out than an actual album.
Also, I never quite understood the mass appeal of "Deadbolt." It's a good song, but I just didn't latch onto it like everyone else seemed to. My favorite track off of 'Illusion' is "To Awake and Avenge the Dead." |
TheSupernatural
09.18.12 | Deadbolt's appeal for is me is that it's so damn upbeat and catchy. Awake and Avenge the Dead is really good too |
cagedescending
09.18.12 | i've always liked Deadbolt because i've worked graveyard shift type hours for a while now so the first couple of lines like, speak to my soul y'know man |
