| 30 Songs Van Halen
Van Halen is the band that started all my passion for rock, guitars and drumming. I´d like to pick my own choice for 30 best songs. It is not intended to be the top30 songs. It is my personal picks.
I did my list this way:
Picking the songs i like most from every one of their twelve records and some loose songs (no live material). I got 61 songs that definitely could make it to the final list.
From that list, i picked 16 songs, my absolute favorites.
From 45 remaining songs, i shortened the list to 32.
When i reached 32 remaining songs (from which i had to pick just 14 songs) i divided into 8 groups of 4 songs each, pick the "leasts", and so on, until i had 16 songs left. It was hard to dump those two songs in order to have my final 30 songs.
Now, this is listed in chronological order. Please, comment. | 1 | | Van Halen Van Halen
Running With The Devil
Because that sweet sweet riff, and a minimalistic solo that really kicked everyone nuts back in 1978. | 2 | | Van Halen Van Halen
Eruption
How come not? This track changed the guitar world forever. | 3 | | Van Halen Van Halen
You Really Got Me
I know, this one belong to The Kinks, but the VH version is so fun and amazing (and it was a smash) i have to include it. And i wanted to pay some tribute to the cover side of the band. | 4 | | Van Halen Van Halen
Ain´t Talking About Love
One of my personal favorites of all times. Monster riff, catchy in your face lyrics, fantastic rhythm section, and one hell of a solo. Also, a blast to perform. | 5 | | Van Halen Van Halen
I´m The One
I know, it seems ike the playlist from Van Halen I, but it was because that record was that good. I'm the One is as fun as it is intense. The bad dada shabby du wah bridge is amazing! | 6 | | Van Halen Van Halen
Little Dreamer
A deep cut. I just love how this song swings. I was amazed with Eddie´s solos, but now i think his riffs are even better than his solos. This one has one classy groovy riff. | 7 | | Van Halen Van Halen
On Fire
Heck, i had to include this song, their heaviest, there roughest. This is some serious heavy metal, and David never sounded this menacing again (with a help from back singing from Michael). | 8 | | Van Halen Van Halen II
Somebody Get Me a Doctor
One of the main reasons they got the "party animals" badge is this song. Wild, intense, macho all over the place, and absolutely fun. This belongs to the all time favorites as well. | 9 | | Van Halen Van Halen II
Light Up The Sky
Another pure hard rock song, even heavy metal. Hard pounding riff, heavy (and insanely catchy) chorus, and the cherry: a drum solo. Yes, no Beautiful Girls here, i pick this one over that or Dance The Night Away (both terrific songs btw). | 10 | | Van Halen Women and Children First
Fools
I was about to pick the classic And The Cradle Will Rock, which is amazing. But i decided to include this because it sums up how weird, experimental, wild and wizardly crafted WACF was. | 11 | | Van Halen Women and Children First
Could This Be Magic
Forgive me for not include many amazing heavy or party songs and include this one. But i couldn't resist the opportunity to write about their sweetest song ever. This one stands alone in their catalogue. Sweet, funny, and even heartwarming. Perhaps is the real rain that sounds background. Perhaps the fact is the only VH song with a female back singer, or the sweet harmonies in the chorus. | 12 | | Van Halen Fair Warning
Mean Street
Enter the best "guitar album" VH record with this sorcery. Mean Street is so wildly played by EVH it just prepares you for a different kind of album. And it was. This song needs to be studied by any guitar hero applicant. | 13 | | Van Halen Fair Warning
Hear About It Later
Man this song is amazing. They somehow combined their wild party personalities with the technical amazement they were. | 14 | | Van Halen Fair Warning
Unchained
Come on Dave, give a break! Haha classic Dave. This song rocks in an awesome fashion | 15 | | Van Halen Diver Down
Secrets
Yes, from an album that is known for their great covers, i pick one of the originals, the minimalistic Secrets. It is a showcase that they are much, much, much more that just wild dogs. They are true musicians, and absolutely great. | 16 | | Van Halen 1984
Jump
I swear, i was determined to leave Jump out of the list. It was impossible. | 17 | | Van Halen 1984
Panama
Another one of my all time favorites. Panama is proof Eddie is the masterriffer. | 18 | | Van Halen 1984
Top Jimmy
Van Halen at their best. 1984 was their pick indeed. This song is written and performed by real geniuses. Listen carefully to the complexity of the guitar parts. Mind-blowing. | 19 | | Van Halen 1984
Hot For Teacher
I do believe this is (Eruption apart), the finest EVH moment. The riffs are the bests, his wizard fingers are also there and, in my opinion, this is (again, Eruption apart) the best solo of all. And did you noticed Alex´s double bass? | 20 | | Van Halen 5150
Dreams
Dave out, Sammy in. Man these guys had nuts and talent to pull that change off. They did. 5150 is an amazing record, and Dreams, despite their keyboard, is a great song. | 21 | | Van Halen 5150
Summer Nights
Yes, we missed the wild party factor the Diamond Dave Van Halen had, but hey, There is Summer Nights. The riffs are heavy, but fun and kinda wild. | 22 | | Van Halen 5150
5150
One of the best Van Hagar songs (top two if you ask me) This song could be on Fair Warning without a problem. Awesome guitar work right there, and one of the best performances by the red rocker. | 23 | | Van Halen OU812
Finish What Ya Started
I don´t really like this record so much, but i wanted to include one track. It was between When it´s Love, Black and Blue and this one. I picked this one, well, because is really funnier. | 24 | | Van Halen For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge
Poundcake
Despite their stupid lyrics, Poundcake set the tone for an amazing album, and the comeback of straight rock and roll. I love the drums here (in general, all the album is Alex´s highlight). | 25 | | Van Halen For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge
Pleasure Dome
Another deep cut. I was always amazed by the power of this song. The lightning drumming, the screaming choruses, the pounding bass lines, and overall, the guitar. I rate this EVH solo as one of their best ever (not as good as Hot for Teacher´s, but close). | 26 | | Van Halen For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge
Right Now
Easily, the most important Van Hagar tune. One of their few relevant lyrics, and the best keyboard driven Van Halen song, though this was played on a real piano. Great bass also, with some slapping included. | 27 | | Van Halen Balance
Don´t Tell Me (What Love Can Do)
It´s a shame they broke up right after Balance. I mean, Balance is not great, but it shows the path they were heading to: a serious rocking band. Don't Tell Me is a solid proof of that. | 28 | | Van Halen Balance
Aftershock
One of my Van Halen´s (not just Van Hagar´s) song. It has everything. Amazing intro, perfect and pretty sensible Alex´s playing, insane guitar parts (it has every single thing we love about EVH´s style), great lyrics and melody... it is just awesome. I know Aftershock is a deep cute, but is absolutely amazing. | 29 | | Van Halen Best of Volume I
Humans Being
This is the song. This is the song i was looking all the time, the song introduced me to the VH world. This is the song everyone should listen and immediately should say: Van Halen! Nice! | 30 | | Van Halen Van Halen III
Year To The Day
Please don´t yell at me. I know, it seems like a place misused (picking a VHIII song) but despite Cherone´s vocals, listen to this bluesy song. The urgency of it, the dark guitar chords, the top notch bluesy solo. This song deserves the cut. | |

11.09.15 | wait for it please, i pressed the wrong button again | romulanrancor
11.09.15 | i love the debut so much, need to check out more VH
running with the devil is probs my favourite VH song | Titan
11.09.15 | Little Dreamer, Hear About It Later, Dance The Night Away, and Light Up The Sky are probably my tops VH in random order.......band gets very little love around here
great list | danielcardoso
11.09.15 | Band gets very little love around here [2], the Dave era at least. The first 6 albums are all excellent.
Women In Love..., Dance The Night Away, In A Simple Rhyme, Everybody Wants Some and Sinner's Swing are some of my favorites from the ones you didn't pick. Props for 6, 12, 15 and 23, underrated tunes. | Sabrutin
11.09.15 | I'd personally add more songs from WaCF and Fair Warning. The last album has some surprisingly awesome moments too. Always cool to see people giving some love to 5150. | Titan
11.09.15 | in that case, where is why cant this be love?
still love that damn song | hedunadan
11.09.15 | WACF and FW are both amazing records. I had And The Cradle will Rock, Everybody Wants Some, Romeo Delight, Take Your Whiskey Home, Loss of Control and In a Simple Rhyme from WACF, and Sinner´s Swing and Push Come to Shove from FW in consideration, but i had to clear them for others.
5150 is a miracle of an album. Yes, it was not aw raw as Diamond Dave´s VH, but the Van Hagar was a clever collaboration and you can feel right away how well they clicked with Sammy.
As for Why Can´t This Be Love, i like much more Get Up, Best of Both Worlds and Love Walks In. | hedunadan
11.09.15 | DKOT had some contenders: She is a Woman, You and Your Blues and Big River. But they didn´t make it. | danielcardoso
11.09.15 | Yeah, You And Your Blues, Big River and Blood And Fire were pretty stellar from that comeback album. | Sabrutin
11.09.15 | Fair enough. I really love China Town from the last album. | Source
11.09.15 | Unchained = 1 | Jethro42
11.09.15 | I mostly heard the songs that play at the radio. I know their two debut albums + 1984 well though. | Jethro42
11.09.15 | where is why cant this be love?[2]
| wham49
11.10.15 | should of stopped after the first 15 like it was earlier today, through 19 is fine the rest is not VH | Artuma
11.10.15 | "Band gets very little love around here"
rightfully so | danielcardoso
11.10.15 | Ahah, didn't figure Why Can't This Be Love would get so much love from you guys. Pretty boring track all in all, for me at least. | wham49
11.10.15 | this band should get love, knowing all the hair band freaks around here, every front man from those bands tried to copy Dave, they bridged the gap from old 70's hard rock to the new thing happening on the strip, for better or worse, but the original line up was a kickass, fun time band | danielcardoso
11.10.15 | Definitely, unfortunately they influenced a decade of horrible, unbearable (in my opinion) glam metal, a mere couple of exceptions aside, but they had a great sound and produced a handful of excellent albums. | wham49
11.10.15 | agree, they could not help who they influenced, but THEY were so much difference | hedunadan
11.10.15 | The thing is, VH was both fun and loose and wizardly well crafted at the same time, and i am not talking just about the guitar. The rhythm section is one of the greatest ever, a perfect example of how to build one. the Michael´s backing vocals were mind-blowing, and the frontman figure was rewritten after Dave. | Titan
11.10.15 | Anthony's backing vocals are the best EVER hands down and Alex is a phenomenal drummer. Every original member of this band did more than carry their own weight.
| hedunadan
11.10.15 | Michael Anthony, one of the most underrated collaborators ever. | danielcardoso
11.10.15 | To me, Alex was always a relatively unimpressive drummer, save for
GOT IT BAD, GOT IT BAD, GOT IT BAD,
I'M HOT FOR TEACHER! | brainmelter
11.10.15 | nice list, I owe it to Van Halen for wanting to pick up a guitar when I was 12 | hedunadan
11.10.15 | You don´t need to be crazy wild Moon drummer, or a scientist math peart drummer to be good. Alex always played as the backbone any drums should be. Great timing, awesome endurance (in Live Without a Net he double bassed the whole time, impressive), pretty tasteful and signature chops and did you hear about the "brown sound"? Well, that was the sound Alex, and not Eddie, has crafted. That talks about his sound sensibility.
Listen to the drumming on this songs in order to realize how good he was: I´m The One, Light Up The Sky, Loss of Control, Push Come to Shove, Secrets, Dancing in The Street, I´ll Wait, 5150, Pleasure Dome and Aftershock. |
