10.15.13 | List is just some random shit I wouldn't mind owning in an outdated recording format |

10.15.13 | And not that I don't love the mobility of the iPod, nor am I a music snob to any extent; it just seems that if I'm gonna pay for music I've already listened to a million times, I should at least get it in a format that'll make it new to me again. And fuck CDs, pretty much useless. |

10.15.13 | Audio Technica AT-LP60 is a great record player under 100 bucks on amazon |
MosesMalone
10.15.13 | Well I would say my budget for the player itself is probably between 100 and 300, although I would prefer cost efficiency. I imagine I would also have to pick up a decent speaker system although for the time being I can run it through my Bose thingy. |

10.15.13 | If you're gonna go new I'd recommend the AT-LP120 over the 60 although it is a bit of a climb in prices.
However, what I'd recommend (and what I did), is scour classified adds (stuff like kijiji), go to thrift stores, pawn shops whatever and see what kind of stuff you can find used. You can get some top quality stuff there without necessarily spending insane amounts of money |
MosesMalone
10.15.13 | I'll do that too then, although the pawn shops in my area are pretty sketchy so I'm not sure what they'd have. Then again all pawn shops are usually sketchy sooo. |

10.15.13 | This is one that I'm considering getting. It's supposedly significantly better quality than the AT-LP60 and it's cheaper than the AT-LP120.

10.15.13 | Thrift stores around here didn't have much and I only actually went to one pawn shop (however I've heard stories online of people finding gems there so I figured I'd mention them). I did most of my searching on Kijiji and similar sites. When I'd find something interesting in my price range I'd google it and see what kind of opinion people have on it and whether it's worth it (audio-karma helped me out loads for this).
It took a while to find something but I ended up getting a Pioneer PL-255 for a mere 30$. Not a high end one but a solid mid range I'd say and better than stuff like the AT-LP60/120. |

10.15.13 | Only thing to keep in mind with a used one is they probably won't have a built in pre-amp so you'll either have to plug it in a receiver with a phono input or get a pre amp (however you'll be able to re-use this stuff if you change turntables and it gives you more choice of what to get rather than being stuck with whatever is installed on the TT)
Also, you might have to get a new cartridge/needle but you can get the Audio Technica AT95E for pretty cheap and it's a solid buy. Either that or the Red Ed Elliptical |
menawati
10.15.13 | usually 50% of budget on the turntable and 50% on the cartridge is about right, a used Rega Planar 2 or maybe even Planar 3 on ebay is a good turntable, mine's ancient and still going strong |

10.15.13 | what model do you have menawati? |
menawati
10.15.13 | the cheaper one (planar 2), i think its called the RP1 now but it's basically the same thing |

10.15.13 | Most of this stuff reads like Greek right now, hah. I'm excited to get started on this shit. So do y'all get most of your shit from eBay or something as far as records go? Seems hell's headbangers and robotic empire have some good shit for cheap but otherwise I'm having trouble finding most of my favorites in web searches. |

mine is basically the previous version of that, they make good budget decks, no frills but nice sound |

Haha I get that, I went through a ton of forums while looking to buy mine and learned a lot.
Basically what plugging it into the phono plug of a receiver or having a pre-amp does is boost the sound. What you hear when listening to vinyl is the needle going through grooves so it isn't very loud and without something to boost the sound, even with your speakers on max volume, you won't be able to get it very loud.
The cartridge is this part: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Audio-Technica-AT-95-E-AT95E-NEW-/181228424138?pt=US_Record_Player_Turntable_Parts&hash=item2a320e4bca&_uhb=1
This is the same type I have on mine. The green part is the stylus (or needle) and you can pull it out to replace it. The cartridge requires you to plug in a few wires to install (there's tutorials on youtube) but it's really simple. I'm a terrible handyman and still managed it haha |

10.15.13 | save your money and get a nice turntable. don't blow your wad on some $150 piece of shit. |
