11.12.22 | I remember that, for quite some time, I had no clue that the cover of Meddle was underwater. I remember thinking when I first got into Floyd when I was fourteen that it was just meant to be a painting that utilized color mixing.
I learned what the cover really meant to depict while on vacation in Hawaii in the summer of 2009, during a time where Floyd albums that were (relatively) less heralded were getting a lot of play from me (A Saucerful of Secrets was a frequent listen of mine, around this time). I remember that, while in my hotel room in Oahu, I learned what the cover really was when reading a list called "Unconventional Album Covers," or something to that effect. In between explanations of album covers like Metallica's controversial Load/Reload and Led Zeppelin's innovatively designed third album, Meddle appeared and I learned that it was, in fact, an ear underwater. As mentioned prior, I had no idea about this beforehand, and frankly, there's something about the fact that I didn't know for so long (I purchased the album in 2007 or so, and didn't know what the cover was meant to be until 2009) that remains kind of funny to me in retrospect.

11.12.22 | I think part of me thought it was color mixing because of the fact that I was doing a lot of painting months prior to my discovery of what the cover really was (I was a sophomore in high school taking a painting class, at that time), so maybe I was mistakenly projecting my personal life into my interpretation of the cover.
But then again, that wasn't the only time I was way off when it came to an album cover. I also thought that the cover of Metallica's Load was meant to be flames when I was 13/14, and I learned a year later or so that I was VERY wrong about that. 😂 |
