08.13.12 | Dammit didn't complete. I'll finish them here:
1. incredibly well known.
5. is much more efficient than RYM's.
6. over 3.2, and the highly-weighted reviews are mostly 0.5's with elitist snobbery. SputnikMusic actually knows that some of these albums are good for what they are, and they aren't supposed to be fucking OK Computer.
7. but SputnikMusic has the quality. They have a better community and better reviews. RYM's great too, but Sputnik's the true winner. |

So I don't know any more which site is more reliable in terms of ratings now. The losers at RYM or the circle jerkers (collective consciousness) at Sputnik? Well that makes RYM better then.
Ive been using RYM much more lately. The fact that RYM doesnt like pop punk is one of the reasons I like it too OP. Sputnik cares too much about modern pop punk/post hardcore and all that bullshit that all sounds the same. RYM gives more unique albums their due. But I mainly use their site for their charts, which are just much more specific than Sputnik and have much more ratings on the albums to give more accuracy and what not.
And yes Ive noticed how criminally unknown most any music before 1995 that isnt on VH1 classics is on Sputnik. Baseline is right in that amazing older albums on RYM will have thousands of ratings but on here might not even be in the database. Yet the newest mediocre as fuck pop punk album will have 300. |

01.23.13 | So what's the verdict? |
TMobotron
01.23.13 | Verdict is: both good sites that have their own pros and cons.
But RYM looks like someone wiped their ass with a 1997 geocities website so no one wants to go there. |
Masochist
01.23.13 | "But RYM looks like someone wiped their ass with a 1997 geocities website so no one wants to go there."
Not gonna lie--I LOL'd. One of the best descriptions I've ever seen for RYM. |

01.23.13 | verdict is a lot of people should have blown up their keyboards before they posted in this thread |
Ignimbrite
01.23.13 | one fine day at RYM...
A: new album comes out
B: it's a sweet album and a bunch of people rate it highly
C: faggots notice that it has a very high position on the charts
D: "FUCK THAT SHIT LOL ALBUM I LIKE MORE IS LOWER ON CHARTS THAN THIS"
E: cue hordes of troll 1s and 0.5s from people who have never heard the album
F: ends up with a subpar average
this is why albums released after ~2007 almost never get averages higher than 3.80 on RYM
fuck that website |
Ignimbrite
01.23.13 | examples: highest rated albums for each year on RYM over time
1980: 4.18
1985: 4.21
1990: 4.09
1995: 4.01
2000: 4.16
2006: 3.98
2007: 3.95
2008: 3.86
2009: 3.80
2010: 3.84
2011: 3.83
2012: 3.83 |
TMobotron
01.23.13 | Haha yeah, I don't like the fact that the overall opinion of the site feels disconnected from the users of it. Like on sputnik, people can get hyped up about certain albums even if they aren't instant classics, they're just fun albums, and people will spread the word to make them pretty popular around here. There's just an overall better understanding of the fact that albums don't have to be masterpieces to be just good, fun listens. |
Ignimbrite
01.23.13 | but the thing is that there have been plenty of musical masterpieces made since the turn of the century, but the scores on RYM do not reflect that
i know a score shouldn't matter (only my opinion of it should) but it still gets on my fucking nerves every time. for example, it's happening with the new Cult of Luna as we speak. |
TMobotron
01.23.13 | Yeah I'm not trying to say that my post illustrates my only beef with the site. I actually agree with your rating analysis 100%. I really don't like RYM, at all. I can kind of see why some people do. But sputnik just seems so much more personal and so much less elitist than RYM.
I actually really dislike RYM for a lot of reasons. But seriously I wouldn't care if it was the best site on the planet, until they fix that absolutely embarrassing appearance of their site I could never use it. |
Winrar
01.23.13 | both suck but i prefer sputnik because of the community. |

01.23.13 | "only promoted genres are screamo and metalcore"
UGH, yes.
I've friggin' noticed on this site since joining a little while ago. |
Winrar
01.23.13 | vocal minority =/= majority.
There's like 6 people on this site who actually enjoy metalcore. |

01.23.13 | ignimbrite instead of posting/rating here you should head over to rym and take the fight to the trolls who don't 4.5 every post-metal album |

01.23.13 | Ok Computer isnt their highest rated. It just has the most votes so it has a little extra weight on the charts. If they didnt do that then an album with a 4.4 and 50 ratings would be rated higher than one with a 4.3 and 10,000. Thats what the esoteric option is for. |
