MunsuLight
03.24.12 | Julien, what is so appealing about some type of metal is the riffs for sure(like in rock), the general ambiance being melodic, angry or whatever they want to sound, the chorus like in every music style(except in harsh vocals music)(you can't dislike Iron Maiden chorus), the general energy of the music(for a punky guy you should be able to understand), etc , etc .
I just don't know how to explain it... I love it was my first love in the musical departement, but to these days, I'm pretty much open-minded to everything. |
Eclecticist
03.24.12 | I actually get into this argument all of the time with my friends because none of them are into metal. It absolutely astounds me because when I meet their friends at parties at least one of them is a metalhead too. So my counter question is, while so many people in our western society genuinely appreciate metal how can someone like yourself not?
From what my friends have told me the answer I usually get it that they have absolutely no idea what it is like to appreciate music as art rather than just culture and so they find it difficult to distance themselves from an album and appreciate it for what it is rather than absorbing themselves in it and becoming part of the music. |

03.24.12 | there is no such thing as an objective argument to justify taste. you're not gonna find that. I like metal because it's cathartic, I enjoy heavy music, it kicks balls, riffs are cool, and some groups get the song/albumwriting aspect right and it's awesome/epic when that happens in conjunction with the m/. the list goes on. idk if that answers your question.
There are albums with crossover appeal. sometimes those get to a lot of people and get them into metal?....idk |

03.24.12 | Metal is a style of music that I enjoy because of its variety in styles. Although it is usually, within its own styles, a shameless rehashing of better bands in the genre. Like how every good melodic death metal band that goes for a "heavier" sound tends to have an uncanny resemblance to At The Gates.
But subgenres like doom metal or power metal are totally different in their stylistic presentation from that of say black metal. It's a matter of accepting it for what it is. What you like about punk shouldn't be what you're necessarily looking for in metal. It's a different genre, and needs to be treated as such.
Don't force yourself to like or even necessarily appreciate it. Just don't expect everybody to agree with you or convince you otherwise, which you don't seem to. |

03.24.12 | Metal's a very broad music pool, capable of covering a wide stylistic range and dealing with varying subject matter. Quite frankly, I dislike most of it. However, I found my preferred subgenre of choice to be death/doom metal, which livens up the suffocating atmosphere with a little sheer vitriol without degenerating into perpetual tremolo galloping. And that's only one of many, many options. Perhaps what you're looking for is hidden under the crust of the more established bands and styles? Also, as you're coming from a punk background, you could try easing your transition with bands like Disembodied. |
fr33convict
03.24.12 | I like the release it gives. I also like how it doesn't box itself off in it's own genre and typically is free to transition wherever it wants (whether it be folk, pop, and br00tal deathcore all in one song) and as a modern guitarist it appeals to me more than anything else except jazz. I also left a post in your shoutbox with some good places to start if you wanna try to get more into it. |

03.24.12 | Well, an argument that could be thrown is a lot of punk is basic/simple.....some punk bands can hardly play their instrument, they know how to write a good melody and hook. Where as, most metal bands can be complex and have better musicianship, and it may be harder for the untrained ear to hear the melodies and hooks, but they are there. Every style of metal has a unique flavor, but just like any music their is a riff and that may be the hook or the melody, or depending on the vocals that could be the hook or the melody. My guess is that you haven't checked out too much metal, and you have an untrained ear for it. |

03.24.12 | check out hypocrisy - roswell 47 and just melodeath the fuck out |

03.24.12 | Technicality is the most overrated thing in metal though. If anybody listens to a band or genre because of how technical it is they're missing the point. Thats something alot of metal bands (especially prog and tech death) fuck up with IMO. They all just try to outwank eachother. Some of the best songs in history were the simplest. Songwriting and emotion should always come before technicality/heaviness/speed. Those things are just a bonus. Its why alot of people find it hard to connect with the more extreme metal genres because many of the bands just want to be more extreme than the last guy with no regards to connect on an emotional level besides being angry. /damn. |
Oathbreaker
03.24.12 | Just stop talking about music, urgh. |

03.24.12 | Yankee, I am not a fan of wankery or too technical music myself. I guess I should have broken in down more, the music sounds more complex to the untrained ear. 03.24.12 | Nice call, MetallicOpeth, I have never read that review before, but that is a great way of putting it. |
YankeeDudel
03.24.12 | Steel I would say Punk has much more positive/uplifting emotion than most metal though. Which is why I like Metalcore/Hardcore/Punk over straight up death metal that mostly just talks about well.. death. Even if the instrumentation in death metal destroys punk there is more emotion and putting the song first in punk than death metal. I know death metal fans will say they dont care much about lyrics, singing, or vocals that even resemble a human being but thats a big part of music to alot of people. Without any lyrical aspect you're just listening to a dude burp into a mic over blast beats with no melody. Obviously its more than that and if it connects with you fine, but thats what it sounds like and Ive listened to it enough to form an opinion. I mean what would Master Of Puppets be if James just incoherently barked the whole song and the melodic middle section was just cut out? Itd be death metal and it would suck. |

YankeeDudel
03.24.12 | I have Death. Everyone always recs me them when I say that. But they're the vast exception. |
SteelErectedb4you8er
03.24.12 | Yankee, I am a death metal vocalist, and it isn't easy to growl, there is a technique and to be able to do it properly takes some practice like any instrument. And to say that there isn't any emotion in death metal is false. Personally when I am up there growling and playing death metal, it is a therapy session to release all of the frustration, anger, problems that bother me in my life. It gives me a chance to release. And as listeners, I think the aggressiveness of the music is what helps other people deal with their problems in life. Maybe it isn't through the lyrics, but the music speaks to people, and helps release tension. And metal comes in many forms, and each displays a different kind of emotion, but it all comes from inside. I write doom metal songs, I play death metal too, and no matter the lyrical topic, the music comes from my soul and I write it because it means something to me, and sometimes people can feel that in the music. Music speaks to people differently, but you can't say because death metal doesn't speak to you in that way, that it lacks emotion. |
fr33convict
03.24.12 | have you even heard camel |
YankeeDudel
03.24.12 | Fair enough Steel. I know death metal vocals take some skill to master without fuckin your throat up, but still they just dont sound all that good to me. I mean who really wants to get screamed at all day long? I get the cathartic release one could get from listening to it, as I get the same thing, but when thats ALL somebody listens to then they must be a really angry person lol. I mean Ill throw on some Converge when Im pissed, but I cant listen to that for hours on end like some can. To each their own. |
SteelErectedb4you8er
03.24.12 | Well, trust me, I understand completely. One moment, I could be listening to Decapitated, the next moment I am listening to Depeche Mode, and then maybe some Merle Haggard. I don't just listen to metal myself, but some people just love it too much to even care about anything else. Maybe it is a phase in their life, or maybe they are angry all the time. Like I said, music speaks to people differently, but real music all across the board, and I mean real music, is meant to grab people in some way, shape, or form...and some people just want death metal! I listen to metal not only emotionally, but to hear the riffs, the instrumentation, etc.
And baseline, that's like, your opinion, man. |
North0House2
03.24.12 | Post-metal got me into it. Black metal solidified me in the genre. It's not my favorite genre. However, my favorite genres stem from both post-metal and black metal. I personally think it's an acquired taste. When I first heard Rosetta, I thought it was disgusting, but something kept making me listen to them more and more. Eventually, I started to love it. The rest was history.

I'm guessing you have a problem with its vocals, which I noticed a lot of people seem to have a problem digesting. The only thing I can recommend you is to ease into the genre, start with bands that either focus moreso on the instruments or bands that employ less harsh vocals. I find a lot of punk vocals just as distressing as metal vocals, but you just kind of have to accept that those vocals are there because that's how they identify with the genre and the emotions they're conveying. Anything else or anything less transforms the sound completely. |

03.25.12 | It's kind of just a phase in life for most people anyway (and sometimes you don't have that phase which is fine too). I loved metal when I was younger and eventually just found it ridiculous to listen to it myself. You ever notice most normal people above the ages of say 19-23ish stop listening to metal? You can say what you will at age 16-18 (which I'm sure most of you are), that you'll listen to metal forever or what have you, but eventually most people find more interesting forms of music as adults. You don't generally go to metal shows and see normal adults, you go to metal shows and find dudes that live in their parents basements and only work part time to pay off their stupid faux-artsy tattoos
Hey, everyone has their own taste and opinion etc etc - but at 23, as someone who played metal - bought metal albums - went to a ton of metal shows, I can sit her and confidently tell you that you'll very likely grow out of metal and just remember it as a phase. There is literally not a single metal album in my collection anymore, and never has there been a single second where I've wanted to go back and listen to it in quite a few years.
Let the freaking out commence. |

What!?!? I listen to metal because i like it, im 26, have a mortgage and am getting married next year and hopefully plan to have a family and stuff within the next few years. I like metal because i like it and i anything as i've gotten older i've discovered more heavy and extreme bands as a result of my experiences. The stereotypical cellar dwelling shut in is a monumental pile of horse shit that should be force fed to every pretentious cunt who hangs onto the idea. |

03.25.12 | Vin - "immature self-absorbed nonsense"?
I'm literally saying I "loved" this genre of music when I was younger and understand what the appeal is. Not entirely sure where the "immature self-absorbed nonsense" comes into play here. I grew up and found much better things. All the kids I hung out/played in bands with that were also into metal did the exact same. I'm not here to offend anyone, I'm saying it's called growing up - that's all. |

03.25.12 | I just want to make clear I'm not trying to bicker with anyone here over opinions. I respect everyone has them, and that's fine. I wasn't trying to really stereotype either but as I said - can you at least partially admit that people over that age group "generally" are that way at metal shows? And yeah - it works both ways - I like Dylan, and generally when I go to one of his shows he has an older audience - I get it.
Once again - this is coming from someone who listened to and loved metal and most of it's sub-genres for years and think someguest is right with the whole "emotional attachment" aspect. No disrespect intended, so apologies. |

yeah get off your high horse
Nonsense: at least 90% of people i know who listen to metal are at least 20 years old, most are above 30s. Not to mention that most are independent and in most cases, highly intelligent.
idk dude personal experiences are personal experiences, dont generalize. |
TheBoss88
03.25.12 | All types of anything draws in losers, it's life. Music, sports, college, jobs - you name it. But the last time I went to a jazz concert, a folk concert, an indie concert, a blues concert etc etc I can assure you there were exponentially less losers than any metal show I've ever attended. |
KjSwantko
03.25.12 | Metal is a genre of intelligent people, especially when you get into elite bands who are doing something truly interesting.

03.25.12 | Vesper: Way to put words in my mouth. Those sound like respectable people to me.
Last time I checked I don't normally ask people at metal shows if they "work a 9-5" or "want a family". I generally would say is a loser is someone who goes to a concert to: fight, hurt people, throw women on the floor in a pit, try and stab someone in a pit, or a 300 pound piece of garbage trying to start a fight with a 16 year old cause he "looked at him funny". All things I've seen done at metal shows in life... |

03.25.12 | Metal honestly, has some of the most talented muscians that have EVER lived. The complexity and rythmn that is found in an overwhelming majority of metal songs remind me that I still have faith in music. |
Vesper
03.25.12 | @Boss - No, all you did before was call metalheads losers that live in their parents' basements and have part-time jobs to pay for faux-artsy tattoos. (It's not unreasonable to infer that your idea of a 'non-loser' was someone who, conversely, has a full-time job, is financially independent, and is generally clean-cut, so my sentence was simply an extrapolation of these values.)
That's not the same thing as people who are violent at shows.
I don't know which metal shows you went to (and your experience probably will differ based on the subgenre), and it's not like that shit doesn't happen, but everyone's getting on your case because you're making sweeping generalizations based on the worst of the fanbase. And that this has anything to do with the quality of the music.
I'm almost 23, and I've had no problems at any metal shows. The occasional asshole has usually been checked by other concert-goers or a bouncer, if there was one. |

I love metal but I don't care for, or even dislike, the vast majority of that list. You're just listing the big names and a lot of these bands aren't even metal. Not trying to flame or anything, all I want to say is that there is literally TONS of metal left for one to enjoy even if they don't like these bands. Atmospheric black metal for instance can be a very accessible subgenre and lead one to appreciate less hybrid BM bands further down the road. |
