Given that the creatures in SIGNS breathe oxygen (for they're on Earth, after all), it would therefore be wise to believe that their existence was founded on the same scientific guidelines as ours. It doesn't make any sense then, if they are indeed extraterrestrials, that they are fatally allergic to water. It makes even less sense in this case that an alien race with a deadly aversion to water would invade a planet that is eighty per cent water and a planet from whose skies water drops every day. I think it's really clever that at face-value, SIGNS is an alien-invasion story while digging deeper it is an exorcism story. In any case, this entire discourse is useless, because M. Night Shyamalan explained in some interview or other that the "aliens" are physical manifestations of the characters' personal demons and that the water, which is holy, is what kills them.
