2014 Live Sets Yaaa
it was a great year for seeing great bands. |
1 | | Janelle Monae The Electric Lady
HOB - san diego. decked out the stage in all white. her stamina is ridiculous, first show
of 2014. THE BOOTY DONT LIE. |
2 | | Volcano Choir Repave
HOB san diego, one week after janelle VERY solid way to start the year |
3 | | Darkside Psychic
the observatory - santa ana. literal smoke and mirrors blew me away. |
4 | | Animals as Leaders The Joy of Motion
my band CHON had the chance to tour twice with this band in 2014, once with After the
Burial and Navene-K, and once with Conquering Dystopia. incredibly solid every night,
and more importantly some of the sickest guys ive had the pleasure of touring with. |
5 | | Haim Days Are Gone
coachella. sooooo muchhhh jamminnnn |
6 | | Bonobo The North Borders
coachella. he played with a live band and it was so tight. |
7 | | Outkast Stankonia
coachella. lots of technical difficulties, andre 3000 gettin super pissed at the sound guys
and seemed bitter that the crowd just wanted to hear the hits, but i loved watching the
whole thing unravel. him turning his back at the crowd and yelling "hey ya" was
hysterical. the set was full as hell. |
8 | | Julian Casablancas and The Voidz Tyranny
coachella. very weird but still very good. last minute addition to the lineup. |
9 | | Warpaint Warpaint
coachella. ughhhhh i love this band they are so freaky and hot and they jam so hard.
album was one of my favorites of the year and they played the songs even better live. |
10 | | Lorde Pure Heroine
coachella. post grammy winnin 17 year old weird dancin new zealand chick how cool
does it get. watchin her do her thing in the flesh was awesome. |
11 | | Queens of the Stone Age ...Like Clockwork
coachella. one of the best sets of the weekend hands down. jon theodore drumming with
them is the best shit. every single song slayed. |
12 | | Chance the Rapper Acid Rap
coachella. goddamn this dude can perform. justin bieber walked out that was weird,
google his outfit it was hilarious. |
13 | | Blood Orange Cupid Deluxe
coachella. very solid set. dude works his ass off. |
14 | | Neutral Milk Hotel In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
coachella. hands down highlight of the weekend. got to see jeff mangum play at
coachella 2012 and again in 2013 in san diego, but this was so different and so much
more and sooooo nuts. never in my life did i think this would happen. |
15 | | Arcade Fire Reflektor
coachella. solid way to end the weekend. sat down for a lot of the set in the back
watching on screens, but just hearing them go through their albums was awesome. |
16 | | Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light on Everything
casbah - san diego. my first 21+ show, i was always frustrated by 21+ shows until i
went to one and now i realize why they exist. standing in the front being blasted by
double violins and swirly guitar ugh it was so tite. |
17 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan Option Paralysis
porters pub - san diego (w/ trash talk, retox). i wish the sound at this venue was better,
but they still destroyed shit. they are robots. |
18 | | United Nations United Nations
skate and surf fest - asbury park NJ. this fest was tied into one of the animals as leaders
tours this year, got to see some great sets. this one included. |
19 | | Unlocking the Truth no album yet lol
skate and surf fest. set of the year hands down. jk but really for how young these guys
are they kill it and i love that theyre touring and playing these fests. |
20 | | Circa Survive Blue Sky Noise
x 2, skate and surf fest + HOB - san diego(w/ pianos become the teeth, title fight). this
band kills it live i dont understand how anthonys voice holds up after singing for that
long. |
21 | | Cloud Nothings Here and Nowhere Else
constellation room - santa ana (w/ the wytches). another one of my favorites albums
this year. guitar tone live is kinda weird, too distorted at parts and it transitions weird,
but his chord-work is phenomenal and i love this band. |
22 | | The Field From Here We Go Sublime
echoplex - los angeles (w/ peaking lights). this set was bliss i zoned out so freakin hard
holy shit. set felt like it was 15 minutes long but it was an hour or so goddamn i loved
this set. |
23 | | Flying Lotus You're Dead!
x 2, casbah - san diego (w/ peaking lights) + FYF fest. my album of the year until black
messiah dropped last second. his set at the casbah was really low key and really fun. but
his set at FYF.... oh man it was so phat and just so next level. he had the 3D layer
visuals that he didnt have at the casbah show. some of the most fun ive ever had during
a set. endless dance party with the best of friends. but not endless unfortunately
sheeeit. |
24 | | Weezer Pinkerton
del mar fairgrounds - san diego. this set was goofy and fun, thankfully they didnt play
too many newer songs. and i got to hear one song off pinkerton!!! |
25 | | How to Dress Well What Is This Heart?
echoplex - los angeles. i was not expecting this set to be as solid as it was. he played
the day before FYF fest and i was already gonna be in town the night before, so i figured
why not. lots of really huge moments, great crowd interaction. |
26 | | Run the Jewels Run the Jewels 2
x 2, FYF fest + glasshouse - pomona (w/ despot). another one of my favorites of the
year, set wise and album wise. the chemistry between these two is so much fun to watch
in person. they have the energy of two 15 year old kids who just hit the big time and
goddamn i love this duo. their FYF set was mostly running through RTJ cause they had
only dropped blockbuster night pt. 1 at the time (which they closed with), but the
glasshouse show was a combo of both albums, almost the entirety of both. |
27 | | Mac Demarco Salad Days
x 2, FYF fest + UCSB. wasnt too huge on his FYF fest set which was a bummer cause i
love this album so much, another one of my favorites this year. the sound was kinda
weird and i dont think he should have been playing on the mainstage, BUT his show at
UCSB was much sicker. as he was wrapping up his set he got detained by cops for
climbing some rafters, they claimed they didnt know he was the performer lol. but still it
was a great set minus the 10 minute jam of smoke on the water. |
28 | | Tycho Awake
FYF fest. this set was originally to kill some time until the next band, which i think was
Grimes i cant remember, but i ended up really enjoying their whole set. |
29 | | Grimes Visions
FYF fest. this set was out of control, ive never seen one person work as hard on stage as
her in my entire life, and she made it look effortless. she would be dancing and being all
cute and singing and then out of nowhere she would fuckin SCREEAAAAMMM and it was
so primal and so sick UGH im stoked for her new album. |
30 | | Thundercat Apocalypse
FYF fest. i could watch this guy shred for hours i dont even understand how his fingers
can work like that. |
31 | | Earl Sweatshirt Doris
FYF fest. real solid real fun, he missed his guest spot during fly lo's set which was kinda
weird haha but here he was killing it. |
