Best Of 2013

Great year for electronic music especially
30Nils Frahm
Spaces

Patchy, but the highlights are incredible
29Forest Swords
Engravings

Really interesting aesthetic
28Bonobo
The North Borders

Not really any weak moments
27DJ Koze
Amygdala

Really interesting songs but still pretty accessible
26Danny Brown
Old

A good album, not a patch on XXX and definitely not a classic, still good though
25Deerhunter
Monomania

Great stripped back record for this band. Hope they continue pushing forward however on their next record
24James Blake
Overgrown

Less original but better tunes, keep coming back to the singles
23Arcade Fire
Reflektor

Title track is amazing, rest of it doesn't live up but is still good
22The Haxan Cloak
Excavation

A bit like Andy Stott this is incredibly physical. Really, really dark too
21The Knife
Shaking the Habitual

Some epic tracks on here, still slightly prefer Silent Shout but they have upheld their reputation with this
20Disclosure
Settle

Some of the best house tunes around, I even like the pop songs on here; very organic sounding
19 Iceage
You're Nothing

Similar to their last effort but just better somehow, look forward to their next release
18Darkside
Psychic

Great nocturnal record, brilliantly produced
17Run The Jewels
Run The Jewels

These guys don't take themselves too seriously but they could end up being one of the more prolific partnerships in Hip-Hop
16Jon Hopkins
Immunity

Weaker second half but really great tracks on the first. Ending of Open Eye Signal is incredible
15Nails
Abandon All Life

Improved production and songs on this. Really exciting band
14Autechre
Exai

Sprawling beats from space. Love most of these tracks
13Julia Holter
Loud City Song

Cover art fits the mood of the album so well. Some of the most beautiful moments of 2013 on this
12Logos
Cold Mission

Incredibly visceral, really dark and atmospheric. + pretty original
11Gorguts
Colored Sands

Solidifying their legacy with this one, another classic pretty much
10 Boards of Canada
Tomorrow's Harvest

Watch the Reach for the Dead video again to regain appreciation for this brilliant return
9Altar Of Plagues
Teethed Glory And Injury

Why did they have to split up. Another amazing black metal release from 2013
8Vampire Weekend
Modern Vampires of the City

Great pop songs with enough quirkiness to keep them interesting. Don't know what they improve on really so this may be their pinnacle
7Burial
Rival Dealer

Not as good as Kindred (what is?) but a really interesting addition to the flawless discography of Burial. Rival Dealer is probably the best track of the
year
6Deafheaven
Sunbather

Can't wait for their next release, one of the best bands to start out in the 2010s
5Oneohtrix Point Never
R Plus Seven

This one's a bit underrated. I personally think it's his best release, some really grand awe inspiring moments coupled with playful noodling
4My Bloody Valentine
m b v

So sensual, many of the tracks fit to be on Loveless. Couldn't have asked for anything better from this
3Tim Hecker
Virgins

Heavy ambient music? One of the great modern innovators
2Kanye West
Yeezus

One of the few polarizing records (at least among fans/haters etc). The critics loved it but for some reason many people misunderstand why. No,
Kanye West isn't the best rapper alive but he is probably the best Hip-Hop and Pop artist at the moment. The vibrant aggression and attitude on this
record is what makes it so interesting
1James Holden
The Inheritors

This album has grown and grown on me. Initially I thought, 'meh another pretty good electronic album with some interesting ideas'. Luckily I kept
coming back to it and realised how masterful it really is. Every track is really organic and unique and truly sounds like a step forward for 'dance music'
(most of it isn't really dance). Hopefully this album (and artist) start to get more appreciation soon
