VlacDrac
02.29.24 | Based Memoria enjoyer. I watched it in 2022 and had a blast. |
Winesburgohio
02.29.24 | @budgie which flims pleas

porcupinetheater
02.29.24 | Yeah Tsai Ming-Liang is that motherfucker whoo whoo whoo |
Winesburgohio
02.29.24 | Yes the decade so far has yielded fine crop, and I feel more "arthouse" (ugh) films are creeping into the mainstream, which is a wonderful thing. I want to shout about how much I love these movies from atop my roof |
Vercetti
02.29.24 | "Killers of the Flower Moon (...) does not make one feel it's length"
I felt it tbh
My top 3 of the decade so far: Godzilla Minus One, Soul, The Whale
More movies I liked a lot (in no particular order): Everything Everywhere All At Once, Across the Spider-Verse, The Batman, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Bullet Train, Beau is Afraid, The Suicide Squad, No Time to Die, Nope, Wrath of Man, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, The Father, Nightmare Alley, Those Who Wish Me Dead, Another Round, Three Thousand Years of Longing, Riders of Justice, Drive My Car, Pig, The Good Boss, Official Competition |
Zac124
02.29.24 | Watched Aftersun the other day and I think that Under Pressure scene may be one of the greatest to ever be filmed. Decision to Leave is probably my favourite of the decade so far. Also really excited to watch Monster once it finally releases in the UK. |
protokute
02.29.24 | I like how some of the films listed are misnamed lol
First Cow was amazing.
Some other films I really liked from the decade were: Knives Out (2019), The Mole Agent (2020), Palm Springs (2020), A Secret Love (2020), Lovers Rock (I really loved this), Society of The Snow (2023) and All Of Us Strangers (2023). |
cylinder
02.29.24 | Wes Anderson is on autopilot right now. I liked Asteroid City a bit more than The French Dispatch but I still thought it was very, very weak compared to Grand Budapest.
But that and Licorice Pizza are the only ones on here I've seen. Interested to check the rest |
cylinder
02.29.24 | forgot about I'm Thinking of Ending Things. Still haven't seen Kaufman's animated feature, Anomalisa, either. i love, love Kaufman so i gotta get on those |
YoYoMancuso

Winesburgohio
02.29.24 | neek that is indeed the Good Shit !!. I see Petite Maman is a Sciamma so interest doubly piqued, I'll track it down today |
Winesburgohio
02.29.24 | I have so much to say about Memoria but: the way it gently offers a metaphysics where place and site become imbued and marked by human intervention upon them, the way cultural memory and personal memory intertwine, but mostly, because it is humane and human, the way it approaches grief. Longing complicating memory and day-to-day reality, a sense of uncanniless in loss but, in its most beautiful treatise, the way you take on even the memories of someone you love, and the way your histories become shared - and the way this needn't ever be lost. I'm putting it really badly but yehaw. And like, the scene where Jessica is presented with all the different, subtly variant sounds! More thrilling than any action sequence |
Winesburgohio
02.29.24 | Spoilers for Zone of Interest ahead: I feel like I don't understand the presumed profundity of (Spoilers start now) the cut at the end to the cleaners at the site. Is it something to do with the way any mediated experience can't capture the true horror / the way representation needn't be "direct", or just intended as something sobering and moving? Idk |
neekafat
02.29.24 | No I definitely get where you're coming from! And that sequence is indeed especially stellar
As for Zone of Interest, I think it could be interpreted as a refute to Rudolf's priority of legacy. That night is the pinnacle of his career, but he isn't able to find any satisfaction in it because he can only think of death. That cut to the future could be his epiphany that his evil is all that will be remembered of him, that the museum that will be built near his home won't be for him but for those he massacred. The cleaners themselves I think show the care and reverence that is still placed in these memorials, while his ideology has all but crumbled by now. Idk lol |
neekafat
02.29.24 | Also omg yes lemme know what you think of Petite (: |
Trebor.
03.01.24 | Just saw All of Us Strangers and it fucked up my queer ass |
neekafat
03.01.24 | Dude same I saw it last night, devastating movie |
protokute
03.01.24 | yes. i was catatonic for a couple of minutes after it ended. |
zoso33
03.01.24 | thats exactly how i felt watching Asteroid City, like I love his work, but im expecting it to be too cookie-cutter/indie for me, then I realized its some of his best work as everything climaxes in such a weird way lol |
protokute
03.01.24 | I have a really hard time getting into Wes Anderson films, the only one I really liked was Budapest Hotel, I always find something off about them |
cylinder
03.01.24 | @proto
have you seen Rushmore? |
AlexKzillion
03.01.24 | nice never heard of like half of these |
protokute
03.01.24 | @cylinder
yes, that's a particular one that felt extremely off for me |
cylinder
03.01.24 | interesting, that's one of my all time faves. i do get what you mean tho. i'm def not a fan of all of his movies |
neekafat
03.01.24 | Asteroid City might be my third favorite of his behind Fantastic Mr Fox and Grand Budapest
|
Winesburgohio
03.01.24 | It could well be my #3 2 (after Moonrise Kingdom and Rushmore though)
Ah yes I need to catch All of Us Strangers while it's screening I think, there's nothing quite like a good public weep/keening. and fwiw protokute i really dug Lover's Rock as well but that falls under the "television" purview doesn't it? If not I may have to reappraise...
|
protokute
03.01.24 | it was part of the Small Axe series from BBC, but it is a film... |
Winesburgohio
03.01.24 | the whole series is really interesting and was a huge success i think. all 5 are worthy |
protokute
03.01.24 | I've only watched the Lovers Rock one, because I was looking for something into Jamaican musical history and found that. And it's beautiful, the atmosphere, the music, the party, the people. Really a nice gem. |
markjamie
03.01.24 | Michelle Yeoh's performance aside, I will never understand how Everything Everywhere All At Once is so admired. It took me two sittings to get through it; I can appreciate its creativity and energy, but did I enjoy it after the first hour? No. Just thankful I watched it at home and wasn't trapped in the cinema for 6 hours (or however long it was)... |
protokute
03.01.24 | I don't know.. I was really engaged throughout the whole film, fun and I found the last section to be actually arresting, emotionally. |
EyesWideShut
03.02.24 | I haven't followed film in a minute but you know your flicks |
Winesburgohio
03.02.24 | I think I wanted to like EEAaO more than I did, largely because people whose taste I respect didn't just like it but elucidated cogently on the the whys and wherefores. A second viewing revealed a strong, nicely assembled film that left me feeling kinda cold. But it rules that it dominated the Oscars last year (and that the noms this year aren't totally embarrassing...) |
Havey
03.02.24 | my attention span is only good for shorts these days :/
see what you think of daichi saito's earthearthearth |
gabba
03.02.24 | If Licorice Pizza is “the saddest movie in the World”, I’m definitely among those misunderstanding it. |
JohnnyoftheWell
03.02.24 | Have suffered and howled through most of 20's current oeuvre, but not heard of that one - what is the score, how has this come to pass?
Don't know if it would have occurred to me to include 16, but happy to see it here - revelation shot of That Fatal Sliver of Skin has resurfaced periodically in my dreams ever since first viewing |
Ryus
03.02.24 | i was nervous about 16 bc oldboy is balls but yeah its a great film |
brainmelter
03.03.24 | 11, 18, and 22 are peak |

Decision to Leave
