Winesburgohio
09.06.16 | ...dammit i've been owned, an elephant on a rampage is such a good signifier of what is to come
yeah i probably prefer free improv but there's definitely some interesting overlap |

Archelirion
09.06.16 | I have to ask: what's the difference between free jazz and free improv? Is it simply that improv doesn't have to stick to jazzy norms? |
Winesburgohio
09.06.16 | really good question; as with pornography it's easy to recognise but difficult to define. that's about the case, but free improv can be made with jazzy instruments and ensembles... fuck i'm thrown for a loop there. i guess free improv is entirely 'free' as you say (though all too often it isn't) and free jazz is free playing within an ineffable structured norm that jazz scholars could probably point out better than me.
so basically what you said haha |
Winesburgohio
09.06.16 | perhaps another thing is that free improv focuses on texture and negative spaces while free jazz on the eliciting the limits of emotional and spiritual range, though as in the case of 19 free jazz can be quiet too... |

09.06.16 | Amen! |
Archelirion
09.06.16 | So, free jazz is probably a more 'pleasant' experience than free improv, which is more of an auditory challenge? |
altertide0
09.06.16 | usually free improv is more "difficult", yeah. they're both awesome genres, though.
love the list. 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 12!!! are all my favourites. gonna be checking 16 soon, I've heard it's more free improv than free jazz actually (like 12) |
Winesburgohio
09.06.16 | yeah devote some time to it, definitely elements within free jazz's orbit without being quite tethered to it (i just relistened to twelve and it warrants a higher place here i think, really poignant stuff)
i think it depends, some free improv is pretty gruelling but some of it is is more accessible than free jazzes easier offerings: free improv runs the gamut while free jazz is pretty consistent in terms of approachability (just imo, altertide clearly knows his shit) |

Cygnatti
09.07.16 | free jazz is the only kinda jazz I can fuck wit sadly :/ |
Jots
09.07.16 | oh and free jazz can still be traced to jazz tho this can get complicated to pin down. some players with jazz background can be completely removed from jazz in certain pieces they play.
free improv often has little to do with any jazz conventions |
Winesburgohio
09.07.16 | holy shit thank you, i was being facetious and now i feel warm and appreciated :3
yeah that's a really good point, problemitised by interactions with avant-garde jazz and spiritual jazz too (i.e. the shape of jazz to come: while it's not 'free' per se it's often considered the birth of the genre because it discarded the hard bop/cool template) |
Cygnatti
09.07.16 | 12 feels very unique as far as free/avant jazz I've encountered goes. but I can't really explain why. |
YakNips
09.07.16 | probably because of it's unmatched emotional potency/ridiculously heady shit combo. imo it renders basically every solo sax free jazz album after it useless, even 8 |
Cygnatti
09.07.16 | bruh let's not get ahead of ourselves... but yea I c what u mean |
oltnabrick
09.07.16 | 7 was the first jazz album i ever heard

09.07.16 | I wish I knew how to define/differentiate the subgenres of jazz. I like the jazz I've heard, just so uneducated on it. |
wham49
09.07.16 | start with 50's through early 70's, i usually go by label |
